startx reboots my computer

Well, sometimes startx reboots my computer. Other times is does nothing except slow it to a halt for a while. Sometimes is locks up. I am using init level 3. At the command line, everything looks fine, and I can do whatever commands I want. When I type startx, then things go down the tubes. What doesn't happen: X never starts No error messages get posted to dmesg no log is generated in /var/log/xorg.0.log What DOES happen: on a good run, I get the error message: /usr.../startx: fork: resource temporarily unavailable on a bad run the computer either locks up or reboots, or I get a parade of notices that the comp is "out of memory, shutting down process xxxxxx". running top -u tmiller -b>/tmp/top.log in another console generates a huge file. Hardware: AMD 3500+ x86_64 proc 1GB ram 8GB swap 3 x 160GB SATA drives nvidia nForce4 chipset on Gigabyte MB Gigabyte nvidia GeForce 6200 video card firewall is separate ipcop box to ADSL Software: Centos 4.4, fully updated started as a bare install (uncheck everything except KDE at software choice screen), then added only things I really want/need vmware server (free version) wine I had just spent a couple of days getting the install "tweaked" in preparation to moving to it as my "workhorse" workstation environment. I had tweaked my dual monitor setup (a 21" landscape screen next to a 17" portrait screen took a lot of false starts to get xorg.conf right), gotten vmware working, and was still wondering where the fonts went for my wine install. It was working pretty well, and I was looking forward to using it, and when I rebooted, I have this mess. I have spent hours looking on the Internet looking for similar symptoms, to no avail. "#rpm --validate --all>grep X" sqwauked about some missing *.so files, but showed nothing corrupted. I am wide open to solutions or instructions on where to look for diagnosis information as to what is wrong. Waiting for direction in Indiana Ted Miller

using remote vnc on centos 4.4

Is there a method so on a remote vnc connection the screen is not being shown to those where the monitor is located. If I am remoting in I dont even want the screen that is blank due to screen saver, to even show anything. remote does not need the screen at all in my case. Is there a way to do that? Jerry

Strange system hangs

I've had a couple of complete system hangs on two different systems in the last couple of weeks. The first time it happened I shrugged it off, but now that it has happened a second time on a different system I need to investigate this a bit. further All the systems are identical: IBM (Lenovo) ThinkCentre M52 with 3GB of memory, running CentOS 4.4 with all the recent updates. The systems are currently running the 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL kernel (IIRC, the first hang happened with the 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL kernel). When it occurs, the system is completely hung. Whatever was on the screen at the time continues to be displayed, but the machine doesn't respond to pings (so you can't ssh into it), the mouse is frozen, you can't get to the alternate consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1), etc. In other words, the only recourse is a reboot. There is absolutely nothing in /var/ log/messages or any other log files that I could find after the reboot. In both cases, the users report that they were editing a file when it happened (they weren't even trying to write out changes to disk). Anybody else seen anything similar to this? Any recommendations on how to capture all relevant information should this occur again? How would you debug a problem like this? Alfred

Port multiplier support in megaraid* module for LSI LOGIC LSI00042 PCI-X SATA II Controller?

I have tried many permutations of search terms in google and I haven't been able to find any confirmation that the megaraid* modules in centos4 supports port multipliers/multiplexers. Here is a link to the controller I have in mind at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16816118032 In case anyone is interested, here is what my research has turned up when looking for external JBOD SATA enclosures: I'm just looking for a hot swap JBOD enclosure, so anything over $1000 USD is out of the question. Luckily, I found a few meeting that criteria. The DS-1220 is rackmountable, holds 12 drives and uses two port multipliers. The only drawbacks I can see is that it looks like they could've fit 15 drives with three multipliers, and two drives need direct connections to the controller. That's 4 esata ports used ( 2 x 5 port multiplier + 2 direct to hard drive ). http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=8&modelno=DS-1220 The SC-SATA12RM is rackmountable, uses 4 multi-lane SAS connectors and holds 12 drives. Having full bandwidth to each drive can have its advantages for streaming reads and writes, but the seeky workload I expect won't benefit much from the extra theoretical bandwidth. In order to save on sata controller port usage, I'd probably have to get a few port multipliers. http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sata_enclosures/scsata12rm.asp The SC-SAT10PM holds 10 drives, uses two port multipliers, connects to the SATA HBA with 2 esata connections (and may be rack mountable with some customizations -- I need to check further). Which greylisting milter?

Howdy. Over at http://greylisting.org/implementations/sendmail.shtml they list 5 different implementations - 1 perl and 4 C based. Does any one know if one is better than the other? ISCSI SAN suggestion

Sorry for the off-topic question but I need advice on a buying a ISCSI SAN for 4-6 servers running CentOS 4.4 .The main purpose for the SAN is to store email accounts (that will be accessed by imap - dovecot) and other documents. Minimal redundancy is required (e.g. dual power supplies, battery backed write cache or mirrored controllers) and price for a 2 TB configuration should be under $ 10000. Right now the short list includes Promise VTrack M300i and Dell/EMC AX150i. Do you have any experience with any of these models or can recommend a similar SAN that will meet the above requirements?
