If you block port 81 outbound, centos-yumconf-4-4.4.noarch.rpm will cause your yum to stop working for CentOS-4. We were serving mirrorlists on port 81 for our new update system, but since this caused some users problems, we are now serving mirrorlists on both port 80 and 81. centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm has released to change the default configuration to port 80 for mirrorlist retrieval. If your yum is not working you can get centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm here: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/centos-yumconf-4-4.5.no… This is a noarch RPM and should work on any centos-4 version. You can install it after download with this command: rpm -Uvh centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm

Note that using a non-standard port (81) here is an error - many restrictive firewalls (or proxies) won't allow such a connection - for example at my Mom's work (were I'm now) and my Dad's. Even though it's an outgoing connection. Setup apache virtual hosting, add a new dns name, and use apache's proxy module to proxy mirrorlister:80 to localhost:81 otherwise this will break for a lot of people. Cheers, MaZe.

slightly OT: high availability remote managerment tools

This is completely OFF TOPIC from centos and slightly vague, so please reply to me direct. I just want to pick everyone's brains here for their experience with high availability remote management (servers, networks, etc). Can anyone recommend any good high availability remote managerment tools. I mean something more than ssh, nagios, etc. Anything from appliances to monitoring, remote access, be it software or hardware. Thanks in advance. Dustin

windows XP pro can not access samba share folder.

Hi, I know that this question has been asked many times but i can't find the correct solution from anywhere. I have 4 computer on the LAN connected as follow. comp1(WinXP)---------------------------------> hub1---->router comp2(winXP)---------------------------------> hub1---->router comp3(WinXP)wireless ---> access point----> hub1--->router comp4(CentOS 4.2)-------------------------------------->router I have samba installed on CentOS 4.2 with SELinux enable, everything is up 2 dated. I use swat to make a share folder. testparm doesn't show anything suspicious. Connecting to samba share folder from the same CentOS machine is possible. However, my Windows XP machines can only see my linux machine through network neigbourhood but they can not access it. problem with notebook

i have a notebook, Gateway M520. when i try to install centos 4.2, a kernel panic message stop the instalation.... somebody have the same problem, what i have to do to solve the problem.... my cd's work fine in another pc....

ssh attack

Hi, I get ssh connect attempts all the time, to my servers at home and at work. I've noticed lately they come from a certain ip address, hitting every 3 or 4 seconds, trying 50 or 100 different user names and passwords. And I get these sweeps from 2 or 3 ip addresses a day. I guess this is an automated attempt to guess a user/pass and break into a system. I tried to secure ssh better by putting in an AllowUsers line in sshd_config. Then I thought tcp wrappers and just putting in my own addresses in /etc/hosts.allow would be even better, until I found out that all mail to my email server would be rejected. I have 2 questions. One, is there anything you can do to stop these attempts, other than not running ssh? And two, do those ssh attempts every 3 or 4 seconds slow down a box, or put any strain on it? John

Problem with intercept squid and boinc

Hi, I have configured a squid httpd proxy cache in intercept/transparent mode. The problem I have is that the boinc client from setiathome have problem connecting to its server. If I disable squid interception, all works fine. I see in the access_log from squid that the last request its a POST Anyone have seen this problem? How can I debug it. FTP Server and IPTables?

I'm having a heck of a time getting vsftpd to work properly. When Iptables are OFF, it works fine, and when iptables is on, it dies.
