Help with disk server stability issues

Hi All, I am looking for advice on how to cure a constantly-crashing NFS server which crashes every few hours, or at least, every few days. The kernel log file (below) points toward NFS as a likely cause. The system disk is a 3ware 8000 series RAID1 mirror. The data disk is using a 3Ware 9000 controller to produce two RAID1 devices; these are then striped (RAID0) in software to form a RAID 10 device. We're using a 2.6 kernel, xfs filesystem, and NFS3/UDP. We're running CentOS 4.2 with a 2.6.9-22.0.1.106 kernel. This kernel has xfs extensions, and we're running the xfs filesystem for /home (obtained from CentOS website). In "lsmod" I see both 3w_xxxx and 3w_9xxx modules. NFS is over UDP, jumbo frames (9000), 32k rsize/wsize, async server, async clients, noac. This system has been serving /home in this configuration since October 2005; we've seen it crash rarely, but uptimes were usually on the order of months. This past week, it can't seem to remain up for much longer than about a day. nmap showing lots of ports open that shouldn't be

I have a CentOS 4.2 machine. lokkit shows that a firewall is enabled, and it is customized to allow SSH, Web, and DNS traffic only. But if I run nmap against the server IP (from my home machine, outside the local network) it shows over 1000 open ports. Am I not understanding nmap, or is there something seriously wrong here? apache virtual host

I don't ever do this... Shouldn't this be enough to set up a virtual server in apache? I did create an entry in /etc/hosts and in dns for this fqdn it still gives me the contents of /var/www/html and not /home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public <VirtualHost *> DocumentRoot "/home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public" ServerName app-server.tobyhouse.com <Directory "/home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public"> allow from all Options Indexes ExecCGI FollowSymLinks ReWriteEngine On </Directory> </VirtualHost> What am I missing? Disk Activity Monitor

I have a USB disk connected to a Poweredge server. The USB Disk is a Mad Dog MegaVault with a 160GB drive installed. It's all working fine, but the external LED on the unit is not working. I'm currently running a script (yum-pull) for setting up a yum mirror and it sits for long periods of time seemingly doing nothing. I started the script this morning at 6:20 for my FC4 yum mirror and it's now 8:50 and it's still running. A "top" shows very little activity from a CPU perspective. The guy who wrote the script says there's probably tons of disk activity going on. The script does continue to run because it will eventually finish. One might think the slowness is because it's a USB drive, but I can copy large amounts of data and do permission changes on files, at the same time this script is running, and it all happens quickly. Guess I'm just trying to verify whether there really is a lot of disk activity going on. I tried looking at ksysguard, but wasn't very successful at seeing what I wanted. I'm not sure I want to use yum-pull if it take 3 hours to run per mirror. Right now I'm mirroring FC4, but I also want to do Centos 4.0 and 4.2, and maybe even Suse 9.2. Are there any other disk activity monitors I should try? Thanks, James

mail access list

I just got through updating my /etc/mail/access file, adding about 20 more IP's that are sending spam/junk mail. During the process, I noticed I had some partial IP's in there, like 64.12.233 which is what I wanted to block. The IP did NOT however get blocked. From what I see, as long as I have a full ip address, they are blocked, but the partial (16) is not. Should it not work anyhow? Never had this problem before, and yes, I run a make on the file after editing. Sam

disk initialize

All, Is there a way to "re-initialize" as disk? remove the the boot loader and partions etc... make it "seem" like a brand new disk? Thanks, Jerry

List of packages in RHEL extras?

I'm subscribed to the Nahant list and noted someone complaining about the IBM version of Java. Whilst his problems would probably disappear by using the official Java from www.java.com, my question is what is the list of rpms in the extras ISO/channel? I know licencing and so on may mean they cannot be redistributed but i just wanted to know if I'm missing out on anything. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Username with dots

Hi, There is a way to allow usernames with dots like firstname.lastname. On Red hat 7.3 it was possible, but after Fedora 1 it was blocked. How this could be changed? Thanks, -- Cleber P. de Souza
