CentOS 4.3 success

Just ran yum check-update and found 4.3 has been released today. After reading the release-notes I ran the upgrade. About 150 MB. Went fast and smooth from a local mirror. So far no problems. Offline yum update possible?

Is it possible to update a centos system that is NOT connected to the Internet at all? e.g. Centos 4.1 to 4.3? Can this be done with a 4.3 install CD, or by wget'ing some files, moving them to the machine on CD or DVD and then upgrading using yum locally?

have a strange isue. [ this is my 2nd day with centos4] nice instalatin BTW ok, i activated cupsd sharing and open the port 631 in the security level when i lpq from withing a network interface i get thi error ~$ lpq lpq: error - no default destination available. and in centos the log shows D [19/Mar/2006:08:37:17 -0500] AcceptClient: 8 from 192.168.1.100:631. D [19/Mar/2006:08:37:17 -0500] ReadClient: 8 POST / HTTP/1.1 D [19/Mar/2006:08:37:17 -0500] SendError: 8 code=403 (Forbidden) D [19/Mar/2006:08:37:17 -0500] CloseClient: 8 D [19/Mar/2006:08:37:17 -0500] CloseClient: 6 i search the archieves and found similar issues but not real response i tried several things in the config file but no avail anyone can shed any light why this would be i am able to print from centos.... its from other pc's in the network that i am not able repeat i open port 631:tcp i also tried udp and in cups config i specified to share the printer TIA

lphdisk and kickstart partitioning - laptop install

So I want the suspend to disk option. I have found lphdisk http://www.procyon.com/~pda/lphdisk/ It says to create a primary partition of type a0 How do I do this in kickstart? Will it let me do a type? part /??? --fstype a0 --size 1058 size is 1024 + 32 + 2 What do I put in for the mount point? Where do I go for help? I have exhausted google...

notebook build try 1 tonight

Well, I am not going to the IETF social tonight (even though it is the 20 anniversary party at a dude ranch outside of Dallas, and I have been here for 13 of those years). So it is the perfect time to shoot trying to do the build. We shall see.... So I will try and setup the suspend partition and then not format it. And see what I can load. Then check out the system. If it takes me a few tries, that's ok. It is supprising how hard it is to get information of putting Linux on notebooks....

is apt/synaptic OK?

Hi, because I'm used to apt based distro's like Debian and I also use it with Fedora, I wondered if I could use apt/synaptic on Centos 4.2 and if somebody could post his sources.list for the repo's that are availabel through apt. thanks! Ivago

HP DL140G2 and SATA woes

Posted a similar version of this to the RHEL4 list... I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.2 installed on a DL140G2 with two SATA drives. I am doing a PXE install, so I do not have a CD-ROM drive in the system and this appears to have the side-effect that both SATA drives are caught by the Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver before ata_piix can catch it. As soon as I hook an IDE CD-ROM up to the system, the ata_piix driver somehow can get access to the SATA drives first and they use the SCSI subsystem and I get infinitely better performance. However, I have to disconnect one of the SATA drives to attach a CD-ROM drive (don't have a power splitter currently). Without the CD-ROM drive, dmesg shows the IDE driver assigning hda and hdc to my two SATA drives -- and later: ata_piix version 1.03 ata_piix: 0x1f0 IDE Port busy ata_piix: probe of 0000:00:1f.2 failed with error -16 Booting with noprobe doesn't appear to solve this problem. My current thought is to modify the modules.pci, etc stuff to have my PCI device id not match up with the IDE driver. Any other suggestions? yumex questions

I am looking at yumex on my toshiba, trying to create a kickstart for my hp..... What is profiles? Is it possible to build a list completely of install, ignoring the current install? Again, I am trying to help myself along with kickstart. And how do I tell what is just installed without having to be selected? So I do not see freeradius listed not in the update selection nor the install selection. A rpm -qa|grep radius shows freeradius installed on the toshiba. It would be 'neat' of kickstart config could take advantage of yumex....

Reliable Athlon 64 motherboards

Hi - We're looking for a reliable Athlon 64 motherboard. Hopefully this will support 4600+ (dual core) processors, SATA, and hopefully gigabit networking. Reliability is the key. We've tried using an MSI K8NGM2-FID, based on the nforce chipset. This works fine and the gigabit forcedeth appears reliable with the latest kernel update. However it oopses every few days for no apparent reason. We've also tried an Asus A8V-E SE (VIA chipset), but this appears terrible. The sky2 driver works (with the latest kernel update for 4.2, or the jwl test kernels), but then hangs after an hour or two of transferring data. We then tried a tg3 network card and an e1000, and this corrupts the data transferred between it and another computer. Maybe it is the SATA corrupting the data, but who knows. No obvious errors in the logs except for lost ticks. Tried non-SMP, 32 bit, noapic, acpi=off. No luck. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable board? Otherwise we have to buy Intel and get the speed loss... Request for good advice to upgrade kernel

Hi, first I want to thank maintainers of this excellent distro. I've had no problems, even I'm using quite new motherboard (Asus P5WD2) and dualcore Intel D 820 processor. I've updated all packages when You have announced them. At the moment the kernel is 2.6.9-34ELsmp and it works well. But I've lost some understanding how these kernel versions flow ! I'm also a little confused of some related answers from some forums and lists. Questions : - is the kernel version used in CentOS the same as in kernel.org ? - if the kernel versions don't match, where do I get information which mathes which ? The other question (very much relates to the later part of previous question and the need to do kernel compilation at all) : - if I want to compile new kernel using kernel source from kernel.org, what is the best way regarding to maintain the workability level of exisisting kenel (see top)? -- can I use .config-file from working 2.6.9-34ELsmp source and compile straight using that (first to see a working new kernel and then make some adjustments) ? In this way I can save a lot of time and frustration when setting the flags for compilation. Any other important to remember ? (I've compiled kernel since Linux 0.6 so no newbee recommendations. ;-) ) -- I need monitoring for many servers (thermal etc.) and of course they are remote. I would like to use OpenIPMI which seems to be the most modern method and thus would survive for some years (not expected of some other methods/applications) -- these issues are important to due I've more than 1 server and I'd like to use similar approach in each. Could You point me a) documents to wise upgrade of kernel in CentOS 4.x environment ? b) if there exists, example of use OpenIPMI ?
