Clock applet crashes

First things first: Kernel 2.6.9-34.EL, CentOS 4.2, Clock Applet "Clock 2.8.1", calendar client is Evolution 2.0.2. The problem: when clicking on the clock applet to open the calendar page all is well. However, when clicking again to close the calendar page, the applet crashes; "The Application "clock-applet" has quit unexpectedly." Has anyone experienced this problem? It's not a critical problem, but can get annoying at times. ntp server

I thought I'd play with making my system an ntp server. I did the "service ntpd start" it started OK. on my laptop I did "ntpdate IP" and it says no server for sync found. My firewall has open ntp:udp What did I miss? Thanks, Jerry

Johnny, I applied the patch (by hand since it would not apply cleanly) to 4.3's chkconfig and it appears to fix the issue I was having. Generally, what are the next steps with this type of situation ? Does centos patch and release or wait for redhat to patch and release? If we decide internally to patch chkconfig rpm ourselves what are the best practices to prevent over ride of a new chkconfig from you guys which may not have the patch applied? I can confirm this problem ... turning off one of these turns on the other. No idea why. OT Animation software

Sorry for posting OT, but I know there is a huge user base here and just wanted to ask. I'm looking for something to animate some weather images, either png's .ps's or single page .pdf. I am aware of the AniS java animation, but I think that is a little (lot) beyond my skill level to set up. Would be nice to have something I could drop into CentOS and plug'n'play, but I'm able to do a little setup of software. Thanks... Sam

heartbeat, drbd init scripts and chkconfig

Hi, We are using the heartbeat and drbd packages from latest centos (4.3) extras repository. Upon installation of both packages I noticed that if you "chkconfig heartbeat off" that will cause drbd to chkconfig'ed on. And visa versa. After doing some trouble shooting it turns out the "BEGIN INIT INFO" sections appear to be the cause. drbd has: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: drbd # Required-Start: $network $syslog sshd # Required-Stop: # Default-Start: 3 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 2 6 # Description: Control drbd resources. ### END INIT INFO heartbeat has: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Description: heartbeat is a basic high-availability subsystem. # It will start services at initialization, and when machines go up # or down. This version will also perform IP address takeover using # gratuitous ARPs. It works correctly for a 2-node configuration, # and is extensible to larger configurations. # # It implements the following kinds of heartbeats: # - Bidirectional Serial Rings ("raw" serial ports) # - UDP/IP broadcast (ethernet, etc) # - UDP/IP multicast (ethernet, etc) # - Unicast heartbeats # - "ping" heartbeats (for routers, switches, etc.) # (to be used for breaking ties in 2-node systems # and monitoring networking availability) # # Short-Description: High-availability services. # Required-Start: $network $time $syslog # Required-Stop: $network $time $syslog # Default-Start: 3 5 # Default-Stop: 0 6 ### END INIT INFO Is this a bug in how chkconfig handles the "INIT INFO" sections or the way its supposed to work? I don't see any reference to the other in the "INIT INFO" sections so I would not think its supposed to work this way. Can someone offer some clarification ? To re-create this problem just install the 2 packages (heartbeat and drbd) then chkconfig off one and chkconfig list both services. Thanks, Steve

KDE vs Gnome

I think im using Gnome but im not sure. As for using logout command it didn't work that's why I got puzzled and had to ask online since I couldn't find the GUI one which was there but apparently im too blind to see. Speaking of GUI side of things that's why I made the comment about no search features in CentOS. None of my menus offer a search feature in the GUI so I would have to research the command line search feature. I know its FIND but I couldn't figure out how to pull up the Help info on FIND to figure out how to use it. As for the HELP option in the GUI strangly it doesn't contain any information so I would assume it didn't get loaded in the Install. As for the Manuals like I stated before.I just got the valid link last night to the right manuals and I am in the process of printing them out. Im a newb to Linux and so far Linux has not been newb friendly even though the people are. Finding Newb Linux info isn't easy either that's why I been mainly using this mail list. I know I know everyone says to use Google and if I would of found it on Google I wouldn't of asked here. Hopefully as I learn Linux more I will know how to search for the information better to get the answers I am looking for. My next quest is to figure out how to tell if certain hardware drivers are loaded and if not how to download and load em. I been doing everything from basic install and when I noticed the NIC Card was working without having to do anything else I stopped there. Now that I have the manuals printed or will soon I will go through everything to see what there is to see. Thanks again.

Chances of 4.3+ version with latest kernel

All, I had a terrible time installing 4.2 on an ASUS NFORCE x86_64 motherboard. I did manage to get it working... Also the compaq V4000 laptop same issues. I thought I would try 4.3 and see if it was better... Seems to be the same really. All the "fixes" the kernel needs were not included in the 4.3 kernel. What are the changes of a 4.3+ version that runs a 2.6.16 kernel? I know this is not compatible to RH stuff but it sure would be sweet! The centos team is doing a great job. Again... just a thought. Acrobat Reader broken on CentOS 4.3

I have had Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.1 installed on my CentOS 4.2 desktop and it worked fine. After upgrading to 4.3, I can't get it to come up anymore. I downloaded Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 and it does the same.
