Troubleshooting "too many open files'

Hi, Besides file-max and file-nr is there anywhere else I should be looking to solve a C program giving me 'too many open files' problem? (centos 3.4) While the program is complaining here were the values file-max 209632 file-nr 3655 258 209632 lsof | wc -l around 7000 during and about 1111 less after I closed the application. Not Responding To TCP Connections

I have a CentOS 3 box that appears to be having problems where a TCP SYN comes into port 80 for an Apache Tomcat web application, but the rest of the TCP "3-way handshake" isn't happening. When the error occurs, I always see this pattern in tcpdump: * A TCP SYN comes in from the client * ~3.25 second later I get another TCP SYN from the client * ~6.5 seconds after that I get a third and final SYN before the client gives up * No TCP ACKs are returned to the client to continue the 3-way handshake The box is accepting lots of connections on lots of different ports and everything else seems to be working, but I'm occassionally getting these errors on port 80 for the last few weeks (the box has been up for a while). Has anyone else run into anything similar to this? Am I correct in saying that the Linux kernel, not java and/or Tomcat, handles the TCP stack, including the 3-way handshake? If so, getting past the 3-way handshake should have nothing to do with Java or Tomcat... IOW, this issue must have something to do with the OS, right? Suggestions welcome on this strange issue! THe odd thing is that deleting the zone file on the slave will initiate an AXFR. I can see the notifications are received in /var/log/messages, just nothing happens after that. Mike

Yum Update Question

I have asked myself over the years... just what happens during the update process? For instance, the latest updates included updates to php. I'm wondering if apache is restarted or reloaded to read the new php updates? More broadly... if this is done, is it done pretty much for every interrelated update, I guess with the exception of kernel updates? Thanks for all the hard work. Best, John Hinton

Anybody ever done 6 monitors on one server before? :)

My boss wants to put together a Network Operations Center, with a network monitoring server as the centerpiece. He wants that server to have 6 monitors: 4 for network monitoring tools (rrdtool, etc) and two for running commands and the like (ping, traceroute, etc). I know that with the right video card(s) you can have two monitors, but has anybody had 6? Thanks! Ben

sempron 2500+ running at 1044 cpu speed.

I have a desktop unit with a sempron 2500+ to play with. doing "more /proc/cpuinfo" indicates cpu Mhz as1044 not the 2500 I am familiar with cpuspeed. doing ps ax | grep cpuspeed resulting in nothing. I did service cpuspeed start. No errors reported. ps ax | grep cpuspeed resulted in nothing. I was going to do "killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed" to attempt to get 2500+ cpu speed. I am compiling wine right now so I havent gotten back into the BIOS. Is there another way to get the FULL cpu speed. THanks, Jerry
