Anaconda allows x86_64 CD/DVD to be used to install i386 system

As subject says. I just noticed that Anaconda allows x86_64 CD/DVD to be used to install i386 system (using network installation, of course). This is basically broken. For example, yum will believe that it is installed on x86_64, not on i386. So when you do for example yum update, it will try to install x86_64 packages on i386 system. Which isn't going to fly, since installed kernel is 32-bit (so you get broken executables). It can also play havoc with postinstall scripts that will detect they are being run under 64-bit kernel during installation, but resulting system is really 32-bit. -- See Ya' later, alligator! http://www.8-P.ca/

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that a french company named Iliad [1] just launched yesterday a new offer called dedibox [2]. For 29.99EUR "without the taxes" (about 38USD according to www.xe.com) per month you can rent a dedicated server containing: - CPU: VIA C7 2GHz - RAM: 1GB - HDD: SATA 160GB - BW: 100Mbps - Unlimited Traffic Oh wait... I'm pretty sure you're starting to ask my message is a spam ? :) In fact, the other interesting thing is that you can choose the OS you wish to install: - DediboxOS (based on ubuntu) - Ubuntu-server - Debian Sarge - Fedora Core 5 Since this offer is pretty new, the choice is very limited for now. But I talked on IRC to one of the guys working at dedibox after I read this page: http://assistance.dedibox.fr/documentation/doku.php?id=commercial:lancement This is in French but if you read the part "Disponibilité des services" you'll see the other distros that will be available in the (near?) future. Then I asked the guy about the "RedHat" that is written there and asked him if they plan to use old Redhat's release or RHEL (or any clone) and he answered me: RH9 and *CentOS*. I know most of the users on this mailing-list doesn't really care about this since this offer only targets people living in France but since I really enjoy working with CentOS, I thought some here may think it is a good news that a hosting service will be offering CentOS to his customers. Given the price of this offer, there is a huge amount of people that subscribes to their services... I'm pretty sure some people will discover OpenSource Operating-Systems and especially CentOS (when it'll be available) and will try it and love it. Regards, Gilles. Migrate from RHAS 4 to CentOS 4.2

I have a SGI Altix 350 (ia64) that came with RHAS 4, but without any paid support. I would like to migrate the server over to CentOS. Here is what I've pieced together from some older posts by Johnny, can someone confirm this should work? I know this is somewhat covered in the FAQ, although both entries refer to FC or WBEL, which already have built-in yum support. Install the following files: http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/ yum-2.4.0-1.centos4.noarch.rpm http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/centos- release-4-2.1.ia64.rpm http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/centos- yumconf-4-4.3.noarch.rpm Edit /etc/yum.conf and perform a "yum update". Oprofile in unsupported kernel?

I'm currently looking at oprofile. I see its configured in for the standard kernel but not for unsupported. Any reason? Could this be changed? (Guess I could build my own - just hoping to avoid it) TIA Daveh

Possible to cause Yum to "reload" packages a second time?

I wrote in a thread entitled "ip_conntrack_ftp fails to load on CentOS4.3" that I had what I considered to be a borked upgrade, using yum update. When I went from 4.2 -> 4.3 I ceased to be able to use the ip_conntrack_ftp module, thus cutting off my users from ftp access. What I'd like to do is get yum to rerun its update procedure, which should allow any post processing that failed to complete properly to do so. I'm hoping that will add whatever missing piece is causing me the grief. What I haven't found in my reading is any way to get this to occur. Yum insists that nothing needs to be updated, and the logs seem to show it. Yet here I am with the one server that actually needs to have ftp access, without it. Things were working fine until the fateful yum update run. I've considered using rpm -F to refresh the files, but from what I can see that won't work. The switch only causes existing packages to be updated. I just don't see any switches in rpm or yum that will enable me to do what I want to attempt. Does anyone know of a wait to cajole yum to do my bidding? Thanks! Barry

FYI the intial .99 version breaks revolving capture queues. http://bugs.ethereal.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=895 The author released a fix for this (pretty quickly too) but I am unsure if RedHat applied the latest CVS fixes (SVN 18032) to this update or not. cdrecord issues

I have an issue with cdrecord though and I can't figure it out. I use Webmin, which basically just creates an iso and then uses cdrecord to burn it and it worked fine with previously installed CentOS 4 (I wiped and reinstalled about 8 months ago). This is the command that Webmin tries to execute... cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=4 -isosize \ '/home/Linux/CentOS-4/CentOS-4.2-i386-bin4of4.iso' The result of cdrecord -scanbus at bottom of email. Log of error just below. Help appreciated...
