Hello, I was asked a question regarding centos that i do not know the answer. I don't use gnome or x on any box i deploy for production use so haven't checked in to this. CentOS4 comes with gnome 2.8 from what i was told, the question is is it possible to do an update rpmwise to gnome 2.12 via yum? If so, what repositories do i need to enable to pull this off and what if any lookouts should i be aware of? Thanks. Dave.

Choice of FTP server

I have taken over a number of RH/FC/CentOS servers recently. I am trying to upgrade all of them to CentOS 4.3 and configure them to only use software that can be managed via yum/apt repositories. One of the choices made by my predecessor was the pure-ftpd server over vsftpd. I cannot find a repo to get this rpm from and am wondering if anyone on the list has any practical experience with both and can give me some insight as to whether it would be better to run vsftpd (more likely to be updated after a security update via yum) versus pure-ftpd (very few updates needed in it's history). Perl library

For over five years now, we use Perl during the post install of kickstart to perform customization. It appears the Perl setup is broken in CentOS 4.3 x86_64. It still works fine on CentOS 4.1 32-bit. The library Perl needs is missing: # perl -V error while loading shared libraries: libperl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or director Is this a bug or is RedHat deprecating support for Perl during the installation?

Centosplus repo for apt-get?

Is there a centosplus repo I can use with apt-get, or do I have to rely on yum for centosplus?

authconfig and Segmentation fault

List, I configured my system to use Kerberos for authentication using authconfig, so I returned back my configuration of my system to use MD5 passwd and shadows pass using authconfig but when I uncheck "Use kerberos" a Segmentation fault comes to my screen: [root@netreporter.domain:~]# authconfig Segmentation fault I tried to check others options but I receive the Segmentation fault again! I'm using CentOS 4.3 + Updates. Regards Israel

It tends to be expensive to do away with all points of failure. The best you can do on a budget is try to limit your points of failure to things that tend to have a long lifespan (i.e. almost anything other than servers and individual hard drives). For another (relatively) low-cost option, check out the AoE storage appliances from Coraid.com. Mine is still in testing, but it was very easy to configure with CentOS4 and I haven't found any problems with it so far. I currently have a 1.2TB storage area shared between three CentOS servers with GFS. -- Bowie

Centos and 1394 firewire

Hello, Having a problem getting Centos to see my firewire connected camcorder. Here what I have thus far; Installed the kernek fron centos-plus and checked that libraw1394.x86_64 and libraw1394_8.x86_64 are installed Kernel i'm running is 2.6.9-34.106.unsupported here are some outputs from my machine; ~ $ lspci | grep -i firewire 00:07.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. IEEE 1394 Host Controller (rev 80) ~ $ lsmod | grep 1394 dv1394 28601 0 ohci1394 40665 1 dv1394 ieee1394 127961 2 dv1394,ohci1394 modprobe raw1394 does nothing at this point. I don't know where else to look to get this going. Would love to give Windows the boot for good. I'd be thankful for any and all help. -- Regards Robert Smile... it increases your face value!

Installing 4.3 from CD

Howdy, I hate to bother everyone with something so simple, but I've beat my head bloody on this one. I have a new machine with an MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard (ATI Xpress200 chipset) and a Hammer DVD Writer (shows up as a Matshita DVD-RAM SW-9585). Anyway, I downloaded the CentOS 4.3 iso's and burned them to CD. When I boot the new machine it says: Boot CD: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER I've _never_ seen this error message before. I know this is a RTFM kind of question, but I don't have any idea right now. Any ideas? TIA! Jeff

kickstart, no dhcp reply received.

I'm trying to kicktart a CentOS 4.3 x86_64. However, anaconda is unabled to do dhcp, complaining about"no DHCP reply received". While tailing the log on the dhcp server, I clearly see a request come in and address is offered. This same machine kicks fine with CentOS 4.1 (32-bit). Since anaconda could potentially use a different NIC (this system contains 2 NICSs), I've tried plugging both interfaces into the kickstart network (I've seen interfaces swapped before) as a test. I know that the CentOS 4.3 x64 setup I have works fine because I can kick a different hardware with it. Any idea what else to check for? Could it be that the e1000 driver in CentOS 4.3 x64 is older than the CentOS 4.1 driver? Any help is appreciated.
