SCSI Raid

I hate to bring up the raid card wars again, but... :) It's pretty well established that 3ware is a good "real" hardware raid card for SATA drives. So what is a good card for SCSI raid? My searches have come up with Adaptec and LSI as the main players here. Are the LSI MegaRAID cards "real" hardware raid? Which cards can give good raid 5 performance? -- Bowie

Check integrity or rootkits on remote server?

Hello, when one has physical access to a computer, he can run something like tripwire, with keys and checksum on a separate, write-only media, to verify the integrity of the system. What if the system is a remote one (in my case Centos 4.3 on a User Mode Linux VPS some hundred of KMs from here)? Does it still make sense to run tripwire remotely? If yes, how, since you cannot plug a floppy or USB drive in the machine? What if tripwire was never ran? Does it make sense, on a Centos system without physical access, to download there and run remotely one of those rootkit detection tools? Would its findings be surely accurate? Generally speaking, how does one handle these issues on remote systems? Thanks in advance for any comment, Marco

I2c Drivers

I'm having a terrible time trying to get the superodoctor software from super micro running. It appears now, I do not have any i2c modules installed in the kernel, which begs the answer, ARE they included in the latest CentOS kernel? Current kernel for me is 2.6.9-34.0.1.ELsmp. rpm question

Hi everyone, I am writing a small tool that will compare a file on my machine with the the same file on an rpm repository and then give me a diff. E.g. # rpm-file-diff /etc/samba/smb.conf will show a diff output so that I can see at a glance what changes I have made to my local smb.conf file. I already know about rpmdiff but that compares whole packages and not files. Anyway while fiddling with this I have tried "rpm -qpi http://mirror....". Sometimes this works on my local mirror but mostly not (see below) and I have never had it to work on sunsite.org.uk. I know this seems really trivial but I'm worried that I don't understand what's wrong. As a follow up, I was able to find a *free* program to attempt to recover my lost data. (I can't find the name of the program in a quick search, if anyone's interested I'll check my system at home tonight and post it). The software was able to see the lost partitions, but there was a huge amount of CRC errors in trying to read the disk. So I suspect there was a failure of the physical drive itself, more than just mere corruption of the partition table. This was a drive that fell on the floor once, but seemed ok when I installed Centos on it, so I left it in the system. Maybe it was already weak, and the erratic electricity killed it for good. I was able to recover quite a bit of lost data, but a lot of it appears to be gone forever. This is a good reminder on the importance of keeping backups of important stuff. Changed md5sums on a bare-bones install. Logical explanation?

I'm new to this list, so feel free to update me on any rules that I seem not to be familiar with. I'm looking at some strange behavior on a _very_ barebones installation. I'd like to get some feedback on possible logical explanations. * What I'm seeing: The md5sum of all of my binaries in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin are changing exactly one hour after installation of CentOS-4.3. The sizes of the files are increased, with minor changes visible at the beginning of the files, and a large chunk added to the end. Other files are also changing (under /usr/lib for example. Tripwire, if installed, goes *nuts*). My first inclination is that this is a virus, but I have installed this OS on a non-networked machine from what I believe to be clean CDs. * More information: I downloaded the x86_64 installation ISOs from wuarchive.wustl.edu. I checked md5sums and burned the ISO images to CD and then checked the md5sums again. I am assuming this to mean that the CDs are OK. I then installed the "Minimal" package from these CDs onto a machine which was not connected to the network. I allowed the installer to reformat the partitions, and generally used default options wherever possible. I then rebooted the machine, and checked the md5sum of an example program (/usr/sbin/lsof). I set up a script to log the md5sum of /usr/sbin/lsof every 1 minute and let it run overnight. Exactly 1 hour after the machine had come up, the md5sum of /usr/sbin/lsof was now changed and the binary no longer matched a copy I had made into root's home. Virus checkers such as clamav and f-prot (with updated databases) are negative. These are launched from a Helix Incident Response LiveCD. I have repeated this experiment dozens of times now with different options, settings, etc. Always with the same outcome. I find it hard to believe there is a virus on the CentOS-4.3 installation ISOs, but I'm having trouble coming up with other explanations. For starters, what is the md5sum of *your* /usr/sbin/lsof (if you've installed x86_64)? Any ideas on what is going on here? I can perform pretty much any experiments you can think of on this machine. Am I missing a way for a virus to survive a reformat of the hard drive? Thanks in advance for any help, John Ziniti

Enabling MD5 (longer passwords) after installation?

I have noticed on a Centos 4.3 server where I had set some >8 characters passwords for some accounts, that only the first 8 characters are needed (if I forget or mistype the others I login all the same). Can I "move" the live, running system to longer passwords, and how? or is a reinstall necessary?
