Hello, I'm using the targeted policy. (?) Loss of fullscreen mode with freenx-0.5.0-8.c4

I've currently got the nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386, freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch, and nxclient-1.5.0-141.i386 packages installed on a couple of CentOS 4 update 3 systems and I'm getting the same results on all of them. I got the new version of freenx via "yum update" and it appears to have "broken" fullscreen mode. The connection config file I have been using does have the "fullscreen" option set (<option key="Resolution" value="fullscreen" />) but wheras it used to really go into fullscreen mode it does not since the update. I now see the top and bottom panels from the "parent" display and a window title on the NX client window, which is not what I was getting in "fullscreen" mode with 0.4.4. I reran the connection wizard and created a new connection, insuring that the options were what I wanted, but it still has the same behaviour. I downgraded freenx to the 0.4.4-1.centos4 package and the expected behaviour returned. Am I screwing up somewhere, or did I miss something in the documentation? Any thoughts? Swap

I know this is more of a general unix question, but the thread about the last kernel update, and memory usage got me to looking and thinking. Given a system with 2 Gb of memory, and at peak usage, top reports considerably less than the 2 gig amount in use, as well as system monitoring that never shows all available memory used, what would happen if you just turned swap off, and let memory handle things? This machine here, has now crept up to using just under 400mb of swap, yet I've never seen total memory usage above about 1.4gb. Swap memory: I can't reconcile this stuff.

I need to look more into it, but before I start the long and arduous "googling my life away" process, I figured someone might know the answer. I've read the man pages several times and they didn't change! :-( As normal, while looking at one thing, something else bites my butt. I tuned on the swap field in top and sort on it. The man pages say the summary and the details under "SWAP" are both reported in "k". No mention of "m" is made, I presume that it means "megabytes"? If so, I can't reconcile what I'm seeing. SwapTotal: 1572856 kB SwapFree: 1572696 kB Now, if I treat all those numbers ending in "m" as megabytes, it doesn't take long to see that I've been lied to somewhere along the way. Or alternatively, I'm dense and "Just Don't Get It" (TM). Any help? -- Bill

Fedora source packages on Centos -- libtiff again

In my seeking a managable way to build libtiff, on the Asterfax forum I got the following recommendation (from another fax user that made the move to libtiff 3.8.2): ================================================================ Hi Robert, I have compiled libtiff-3.8.2 from the source package for my Fedora Core 4 machine. I am not sure about CentOS, but I think you can try to do the same with rpmbuild and the source package for Fedora: - Install the rpmbuild tools in CentOS; - Download the source package for Fedora: <http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/atrpms/src/fc6-i386/redhat/SRPMS.updates/libtif…>http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/atrpms/src/fc6-i386/redhat/SRPMS.updates/libtif… - Install the source package as a non-root user: rpm -ivh libtiff-3.8.2-2.src.rpm - Go to your rpmbuild folder: cd ~/rpmbuild - Rebuild the package: rpmbuild -ba SPECS/libtiff.spec If everything goes well, you will find a brand new set of RPM packages in the ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/i386/ (replace i386 for your actual architecture if you're not building on i386), which you can install with the upgrade RPM command: rpm -Uvh libtiff-3.8.2*.rpm ================================================================ Does this 'look right' for Centos? If not what do I change? And how do I get the rpmbuild tools? yum install rpmbuild ?? Finally, once I have built 3.8.2, how would I migrate it to other systems?

Installing Centos4.3 in VMWare on XP

Evening everyone, I'm trying to install Centos 4.3 in VMWare Workstation running on Windows XP (my laptop). I downloaded the CD iso's to my Linux box and burned them (I did them correctly since last time I screwed them up). However, when I start the VM in VMWare, it says the CD isn't bootable. Any ideas? Folks, At what point in iowait should I start to worry about having a bottleneck, or is this something that can't be answerd with a single integer? According to sar, after my last reboot to turn off hyperthreading as a test, at one time, I see 4.9% iowait, but then one minute later, it droped back to 0.01%, and rarely even gets to 1.0%, at least what I remember from yesterday. ? thanks....
