Vmware server help

Hello all, I thought I'd ask you guys about this one since I've had no luck from vmware forums/kb or google ... I have a centos 4.3 x86-64 (athlon64 with cool-n quiet enabled) with vmware server 1.0 installed and working beautifully with the annoying exception of my guest machines clocks (centos, ubuntu etc) run very fast. I've read the vmware white paper on guest clocks, tried all their suggestions and had no joy. I've tried passing the clock=x parameters to the guests kernel etc to no avail. There is one last hope according to the white paper....install vmware tools and then set clock=pmtr and then use ntp from within the guest to sync the time periodically. Do any of you know a way to get vmware tools installed when you do not run a graphical interface (ie runlevel of the box is 3) ? I cant seem to get it going. Should I download the tools and copy them into the vm ? Any help much appreciated as I'm not cutting over to use production VMs until I can fix this. Cheers, Bards.

LVM repairing or back to regular ext3?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for correcting errors on an HD when using LVM? I've tried e2fsck and indicates bad block. I've tried with -b 8193, 16384, and 32768 and no good. I've found some info about reiserfsck on google, but this utility doesn't seem to be included in Centos4.3. I did find it on my old FC1 box. I am thinking now I really should have went with just regular 83 Linux ext3 partitions. Arrgghhh. And if I want to switch to 83 Linux instead of 8e LVM, whats the best way, or at least a feasible way? Thanks Guillermo. The thing is, I can send test emails outside my domain no problem. I can't send emails to my internal smtp server from any CentOS system on my internal network. I discovered that I didn't have an MX record in tinydns for my internal network, so I added that. After testing, no changes - any email that's destined to any address to my domain bounces with the error message listed below. I'm not a sendmail person, would rather do without it, but I don't think I can simply remove it from CentOS. I could install postfix, or qmail and see how that works, but it's serious overkill for sending simple emails internally... Had hopes ssmtp would work, but that doesn't either. Works on Gentoo systems, just not CentOS. A hair puller that's for sure, but I'll keep banging on it until it works. Thanks for all the ideas, if anyone can think of anything else, I'll try it! The part I'm confused about is > ssmtp should handle things w/o an MTA running... sendmail on the local machine should know what the hostname is. its possible that ssmtp isnt where the problem is but the smtp hander on the Rx end of things. Try sending emails elsewhere ? to an @ gmail.com <http://gmail.com> maybe ? Alternatively, have you tried nut ? it should be available in most repo's. Dumb question about a Xeon Procesor

Sorry to ask here but never used a Xeon before. Tomorrow i need to install Centos 4.3 on a Quad Xeon (not dual core). Xeon is a 32 bit or 64 bit system? I already have centos 4.3 x86_64 on a Dvd and im not sure if i need to download another ISO or can I use the one i have? Problems with installation

Hi all, I try to install CentOS 4.3 for X64_64 on a new Dell PowerEdge 2950. I have two problems: 1. After booting from CD I pressed 'return' to start installation (BIOS-support for USB-keyboard works). After probing the hardware my USB-Keyboard is not working anymore. Dell removed ALL PS/2-Interfaces so I have to use USB. When I start installation with 'linux noprobe' the keyboard still is working and the installation starts. 2. After the installation starts it tries to load the storage drivers. In the case for this hardware it tries to load megaraid_sas. But it can't load the driver without an error. The installer just says:"loading megaraid_sas" for hours and hours (the complete last night). When I start with 'linux noprobe' I'm able to look at another console (alt+F2) and can try 'lsmod'. The output for megaraid_sas is 'loading' and not 'live' (again: for hours). Does anyone knows how I can solve these problems? Is kudzu not working correct for the first one? Thanx Jörg

All the online examples I have been able to find use the linux GUI. Does anyone know of a document (or mind sharing) how they installed and configured the samba 3 winbind daemon to map SID's to unix uid's/gid's? That would eliminate the need to extend the active directory schema. thanks, Greg

I am familiar with using dd to create a disk image. dd if=/dev/hda1 of=myimge.img However, is there a way to capture the entire disk image into a file. I have 3 partitions: hda1 / hda2 swap hda3 /home and mbr How can I wrap them all into 1 image file. Thanks, Jerry
