System crash on loading gdm revisited

Hello - I've been seeing system crashes similar to this (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1045) on my Rocks head node. Instead of the standard kernel, I've got a SNARE patched 2.6.9-34 kernel running. Initially I'd used the RHEL kernel source to build it (due to laziness ... it was easier to track down :-), but have just rebuilt with the CentOS kernel source and am now seeing these crashes. Can someone point me to the specific patch that fixes this problem? I'd like to confirm that it's part of my source before looking at other things. best URL for tuning for maximum connections, fds, etc.

Building a new 2.6 kernel

I needed more serial ports that the basic CentOS Version 4 system is built to use so I'm using the following kernel build instructions to build the new 2.6 kernel: http://www.hylafax.org/content/Handbook:Basic_Server_Configuration:Modem-sp… fic_Guidance I believe the procedure is correct but the kernel is not building. I used the "kernel-2.6.9-34.EL.src.rpm file that I found on one of the CentOS mirrors. Here are the problems that I've had so far. 1) The correct architecture to use. Does anyone know which architecture should be used for the Dell 2650 Dual Xeon processor? I thought the correct configuration file would have been "kernel-2.6.9-i686-smp.config". I've also tried "kernel-2.6.9-i586-smp.config" and run into the same problems. 2) When it built the rpm it was named "kernel-2.6.934.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm" but I would have expected it to be named "kernel-2.6.9-34.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm". Was it build using the correct name or might something be misconfigured. 3) When I entered the following command: "rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/kernel-2.6.934.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm" I get the following error: "error: Failed dependencies: kernel >= 2.6.10 conflicts with lksctp-tools-1.0.2-6.4E.1.i386" The "kernel >= 2.6.10" does not make sense but I was wondering if it had anything to do with the file being named kernel-2.6.934.... or is there some other problem I should be looking for? All screwed up

I've apparently made a mess of clamav. Tried uninstalling it, and excluded it from dag's repo. Now, when I yum install clamav and clamav-server, I'm apparently missing all the libs, data and so forth. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this back ? I probably blew all the old stuff away during the update or later, and don't have a clue as to why it's not doing what it's supposed to now. RPM questions about trying to build php-ldap --with-ldap-sasl

Hello CentOS People, I'm trying to build the php-5.0.4-5 subpackage 'php-ldap' from the centosplus repo --with-ldap-sasl. Strangly the stock php-ldap package is linked with libsasl2 et al but the ldap_sasl_bind PHP function is not available which leads me to conclude that it was not built --with-ldap-sasl. To this end, can anyone help with the following questions: 1) The php-5.0.4-5.centos4.src.rpm builds 17 packages. Is there anyway to instruct rpmbuild to only build 1 of those packages? Is there a way to hack the php.spec to only build 1 package? 2) Is there a way to specify a configure option with rpmbuild? I know PHP's configure accepts --with-ldap-sasl but trying to simply pass that as an argument to rpmbuild does not work. 3) Where is config.log? After running rpmbuild it is nowhere to be found. 4) I suspect I will need to experiment with changing the .src.rpm contents and rebuilding the package(s). However, because rpmbuild unpacks the archive anew each time, it overwrites any changes I attempt to make. Is there a way to instruct rpmbuild to build from an existing build dir? Support for SIS761GX video

Anyone here who has tried running CentOS x86_64 on newer hardware like motherboards based on the SIS761GX chipset (AM2 socket)? My display adapter isn't detected and downgrades to VESA. -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Stay with the ancient Tao, Move with the present.

CentOS4.3: Upgrade Python for Zope&Plone

Hi, I need to upgrade Python to at least 2.3.5, (but 2.4.3 would probably be better), to run Zope & Plone. Is it possible to replace the current version without breaking anything? or should I run two versions in parallel? What's the best way to go about doing this? i, someone can help me with migration from redhat 4 to centos 4 with a dell poweredge machine in RAID 5. i have sequence from old mailist than can migration from redhat 3 yo centos 3 with the next sequence, from Ted Targosz: #### we performed the following steps to migrate a RHEL 3.0 machine to centos 3.7 backup all data Import GPG Keys: rpm --import http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.7/os/i386/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-3 Install yum: rpm -Uvh --nodeps http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.7/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/yum-2.0.8-1.centos.… http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.7/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/centos-yumconf-1-11… http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.7/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/centos-yumcache-3.1… Update Release information: rpm -e redhat-release-3ES-13.6.2 && rpm -ivh http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.7/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/centos-release-3-7.… then just: yum upgrade and voila, after all downloaded and installed (and a reboot because of kernel upgrade)...we were running on Centos 3.7 (and getting free updates/patches) #### question: i can do the same procedure with redhat 4 to centos 4 ?? i read a lot, lot lot info doc, and i try my own move, like: #linux update #linux upgradeany ..etc..the result is kernel panic... that all.. i hope some help.
