Minor 4.4 upgrade oddity

I ran "yum upgrade" early yesterday from a remote ssh login, but upon looking at the set of packages I decided to wait until I could sit at the console to reboot. So I declined to proceed with the upgrade when prompted. Later when I ran "yum ugrade" again, it found no packages to update. After some poking around checking the mirrors, running "yum clean headers", etc., I finally tried "yum clean all" and thereafter "yum ugrade" worked flawlessly. I've never seen this happen with "yum update", so I don't know why it would be different with "upgrade", but there you are.

LVM chown issues

Hi Everyone, I have got CentOS 64bit running on a Dell PowerEdge SC1850 with hardware raid 1. My LVM partions donot seem to honour chown commands for symbolic links. Is this normal? All other files and directories honour it.

CentOS Cluter on SunFire X4100s

Greetings! Just joined the list, after looking at the mail archives and such. I have a few SunFire X4100s on the way, and I was wondering if anyone here has ever ran CentOS in a cluster environment? (I'm looking in Oscar's general direction.)

No problems in 4.3-to-4.4 upgrade

Another data point: I updated 2 machines, one a P3-UP machine and the other a P3-SMP machine. Both were fully updated with the CentOS 4.3 errata releases. I did this on each machine: yum clean all yum -y update yum yum clean all yum upgrade No errors or warnings (beyond a few config files installed as .rpmnew) were seen during the upgrade process. I rebooted immediately after the upgrade was complete. In the 3 hours since upgrading I have seen no problems with the upgraded software. Good job, Johnny!

Upgrade 4.3 to 4.4 appeared to die half-way through

Interesting problem here...perhaps. I just upgraded about 6 machines this morning after syncing a local yum server with no problems...until I get to my personal laptop of course. I did the usual: yum update yum yum update It went about half way through and then the terminal seemed to just die. It just sat there stuck in limbo. I let it go for about 30 minutes and it never moved, so I killed the terminal, but yet yum was still running as a process which I had to kill. Reluctantly I rebooted, and everything came up ok, but I'm very hesitant to believe that things are tip-top. Is there anything I can do or anyway I can check anything to double check things are actually fine? The /etc/redhat-release shows ok: cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.4 (Final) I've been watching top and all that good stuff. All my services appear ok as well, but call me paranoid because I'm convinced something has to be wrong. Should I stop with my paranoia and just chalk it up to my bash session died, yum completed ok, but hung afterwards? Thanks! Max

no yum update problems

FWIW this has served me very well when any new update comes out, whether there is a yum upgrade or not. yum clean all yum update yum yum clean all yum update or yum check-update | more and make choices later... etc man yum can help of course... I tend to wait until the highest traffic is gone too unless there is something specific I need bug or security wise. Also, it is a good idea to make wise use of your yum.conf and specifically the exclude= area (see below yum.conf file listing) [main] cachedir=/var/cache/yum debuglevel=2 logfile=/var/log/yum.log pkgpolicy=newest exclude=clam* exim perl* postfix sendmail spamassassin distroverpkg=centos-release tolerant=1 exactarch=1 retries=20 obsoletes=1 gpgcheck=1 # PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo # in /etc/yum.repos.d - rh -- Robert - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services (509) 624-7159 - www.abbacomm.net

CentOS-4.4 update: don't forget those rpmsave and rpmnew files folks!

After you do your update, done forget to do updatedb, makewhatis, ... The locate for rpmnew has a couple items of interest and the locate for rpmsave returns one that occupies 24MB of your precious disks - /var/lib/Pegasus/prev-repository*. It compresses nicely to appx. 1MB, cpio bzipped --best. Change in your rndc key too, for DNS.

proftpd and iptables problem

Hi list, im having a problem with proftpd access when my firewall is running. Wiki: CentOS Media Sightings

Hi, I just started a new page on the CentOS wiki called "InTheMedia" <http://wiki.centos.org/InTheMedia>. I'd like to collect sightings of CentOS in all (linkable) media formats on that page, like newspapers, news tickers, magazines on the web or even TV and Radio. If you've seen some report on the news about CentOS and you have a link - send this link and a short description to me, I'll add those to this page. If you have TV and Radio "sightings" and there's no linkable stuff, a short description (Where? Which station? What was said?) would be great. A more common interface to the wiki (like: You can edit stuff yourself) is still in the discussion. Oh, and I don't think several distrowatch pages or osnews will count. But I can be convinced otherwise :) Oh, and please - don't go backwards through your browsers history (well okay, if you have something *really* great, do so - a link to the Tuttle video with a date would be in this category). I'd like to start from now.
