New on CentOS and update to 4.4

Hi Folks, I've been using CentOS for 2 month and I'm very pleased about this nice distro. But now there a the new version 4.4 and my question: I'm using the kernel from centosplus because of reiserfs. What have I to do now? Waiting for an update from centosplus? Please give me a hint. Thx Timothy

Downloaded 290/290 and kernel panic, not syncing. Same old Linux. Fortunately, hadn't started updates, /home had been unmounted by some forward-looking individual and there was a sync;sync and blockdev -- flushbufs running every 15 seconds. =>:-o Pucker factor went from {O} to {o} to }{ the max! Anyway, a quick reboot, fsck, split the check-update into 2 arbitrary pieces and do it again. Part 2 is running as beads of sweat drip due to a recently arrived y \thunderstorm ... but I finished first, powered all down. Back up and everything is working. I like the new look. The flicker when scrolling the virtual desktop around *seems* reduced (I'm sure it'll leave when I activate DRI again, turned off by the stupid Xorg update). Anyway, congrats from this old workstation. Looks good.

disabling console blanking ?

Hi! Some of my centos's servers (poweredge 850/ centos 4.3) are crashing for any reason, and so i wanna get screen (kernel) output afterward. Problem is when the server is crashed and the screen blanked, a keypress doesn't do anything at all. Here it is what i've tried _from a ssh session_ : - setterm -blank 0 and many combinations. - "noacpi" boot option ... Any ideas ? Thanks ! -- Martin

problem with rebootning on recen centos kernels

hi friends, maybe you could help me with following problem: We have one SuperMicro dual xenon machine running Centos 4.3 ia32 version and we have problem with reboting this machine remotely (command reboot from ssh connection). After upgrade to kernel versions 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp and 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp the machine hangs right after the: md: md0 switched to read-only mode. message and does not reboot. Other systems says at this moment something like "Rebooting ..." and do reboot. With kernel version 2.6.9-34.0.1.ELsmp and older everything is ok, so that there must be some change in 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp and later. I have tried to boot with reboot=bios, reboot=force, reboot=triple, acpi=off - unfortunately with no success. Does anybody seen od solved this issue? Dan

Can ONLY log in as root-console perms problem

I did yum update the other day and it downloaded and installed a bunch of stuff, including a kernel. Didn't have time to reboot until today. today when I reboot, I get a message something like this during boot (from memory since it doesn't seem to be saved in dmesg anywhere): CRITICAL unknown class console at line 23 in /etc/security/console.perms and when the system finishes booting, only root can log in. X won't start, keeps erroring out because, well, I can't be sure. whenever I try to log in as myself it thinks for a few seconds then I get a blue screen saying there already seems to be a ":0" running, would I like to start ":1". If I say yes it tries to start another one and fails the same way. here's an excerpt from /etc/security/console: <mainboard>=/dev/apm_bios <pmu>=/dev/pmu <bluetooth>=/dev/rfcomm* <raw1394>=/dev/raw1394 # permission definitions <console> 0660 <floppy> 0660 root.floppy <===== line 23 <console> 0600 <sound> 0600 root <console> 0600 <cdrom> 0660 root.disk <console> 0600 <pilot> 0660 root.uucp <console> 0600 <jaz> 0660 root.disk I cannot log in on a text console either, only root can. When I try it instantly returns to the login prompt. Sometimes I'll see a short message flash for a hundredth of a second that looks like it might be the same one approximated above. I saw a series of messages from someone else saying he had to back out to the previous kernel, apparently because of a NVIDIA driver issue, so I tried that and it made no difference. He also suggested adding "pci=noacpi pci=biosirq" to the grub boot command, but the thing wouldn't even boot when I tried that. so, this must be some other problem. This is centos-4 32-bit xi6 on an Athlon XP 2600+, Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 motherboard that has been running either Tao or Centos for 2 1/2 years. Advice would be appreciated! upgrade to kernel 2.6.9.42.02

Dear all, I have upgraded the kernel and it took my 3w-9550sx-8LP sata raid card out of the box. It also fixed the problem of getting obsolete channel (my posting last week). Thanks for all your help and your support. Thanks Rajeev

Is there a method or way that will allow one to automagically mount samba shares requiring a password w/o using a plain text password? Even if I have to store the plaintext password in a file, is there at least a way to keep plain text passwords going over the network (IPSec perhaps)? === Al
