Can't update kernel, says not enough space

I'm trying to update my server. I have serveral packages to do, but I tried the kernel first: Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. 3.8 update/x86_64 kernel?

After updating a very old x86_64 3.x install to 3.8 it still has kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL. Then if I repeat the yum update command, it offers to install kernel 2.4.21-47.EL.ia32e. Neither of these situations seems quite right. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Does irqbalance actually do anything?

I've got several SMP machines, some running CentOS 4.3 and some running Fedora Core 4. All machine are kept fully updated. A few are Pentium3-based and a few are Pentium4-based. They are all running the irqbalance daemon. The distribution of interrupts across CPUs is indeed kept balanced, yet even after months of uptime ps shows no CPU use whatsoever by irqbalance. This from a program that is supposed to wake up every 10 (?) seconds and examine the interrupt counts. Given that there is an IRQ balancing scheme in the kernel, I have to wonder if irqbalance is actually being used. The man page for this program consists of a single-sentence description of what the program does. Nice. Does irqbalance really do anything on contemporary Red Hat-based systems? Thanks.

Nvidia card fails with new kernel 2.6.9-42.EL

I have a NVIDIA 5200 FX graphics card. After reinstalling the nvidia driver for kernel 2.6.9-42-EL and doing a startx command from lvl 3, the x window software issues a failed to get interupt from graphics driver. I tried to reinstall the graphics driver again and got the same results. I changed back to the previous kernel and reinstalled the nvidia driver and the problem went away. I am at wonder why this would happen with a kernel upgrade from centos. -- Richard Miles Federal Way WA. USA registered linux user 46097

Problem with openvpn and tun interface

I'm scratching my head here a little. And my post to the openvpn mailing list is not getting any attention. I have an openvpn server working with Windows clients and I thought I'd try to get a client config on a CentOS box running. The client is a minimal install of CentOS and I like to use shorewall (3.2.x). I've tried to run the vpn client with the fw off and on with no change. When I start the client I cannot ping anything on the vpn net or the internal net. As near as I can tell no options are being pushed and the tun interface is not being set up. Running an ifconfig does not show the interface (it does show up on the server). The log is being spammed by this: Aug 28 13:54:06 host openvpn[5196]: TLS Error: Unroutable control packet received from x.x.x.x:1194 (si=3 op=P_CONTROL_V1) Aug 28 13:54:06 host last message repeated 7 times Aug 28 13:54:07 host openvpn[5196]: TLS Error: Unroutable control packet received from x.x.x.x:1194 (si=3 op=P_ACK_V1) I have the same options in my client config as I do on windows except I specified a local address to which to bind. Both boxes are configured with ntp and I've checked that the cert was working as far as openssl is concerned. Does anyone here run this configuration successfully? If so, was there anything you needed to do outside of loading the rpm via yum from rpmforge and setting up the keys/config?
