Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

In CentOS 4.1/2, what package contains this library: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? I installed a couple of the compat- packages, but this library is still missing.

Gnumeric

Hi, I am trying to install Gnumeric in CentOS 4 and I can't. It complains about quite a few dependencies failing. It suggested installing some postgresql librairies, openldap librairies... I did that, now I still get: dependencies failed: libmdb/libmdbsq/libsqlite/libxbase/libtds. Is there a yum repository that has them or a yum repository for gnumeric? I have tried Dag, he does not, he has libgda, but that has other requirements... -- Thanks

HTB - Centos 4.4

Dear Friends, I am using HTB version 0.85 in CENTOS 4.4 and I configurated to limit bandwidth port 80 (hhtp) and 25 (smtp), but HTB don't work. Below , show files. Team CentOS breaks though the 200 ranking barrier.

Congratulations to all the CentOS folding@home team members for breaking through the 200 world ranking barrier. Its taken a bit of time but we've all helped to do it. Our next target is obviously to achieve 150th in the world ranking. But, to help achieve that we're going to need more members and more machines. CentOS4 and older megaraid

Release notes say no support for the RAID card in a box I just picked up...is there no hope for this box running 2.6 kernel? http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/release- notes/as-x86/ The kernel shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 includes the new megaraid_mbox driver from LSI Logic, which replaces the megaraid driver. The megaraid_mbox driver has an improved design, is compatible with the 2.6 kernel, and includes support for the latest hardware. However, megaraid_mbox does not support some of the older hardware that was supported by the megaraid driver. Adapters with the following PCI vendor ID and device ID pairs are not supported by the megaraid_mbox driver: vendor, device 0x101E, 0x9010 0x101E, 0x9060 0x8086, 0x1960 <--- my card ---< The lspci -n command can be used to display the IDs for adapters installed in a particular machine. Products with these IDs are known by (but not limited to) the following model names: * Dell PERC (dual-channel fast/wide SCSI) RAID controller * Dell PERC2/SC (single-channel Ultra SCSI) RAID controller * Dell PERC2/DC (dual-channel Ultra SCSI) RAID controller * Dell CERC (four-channel ATA/100) RAID controller * MegaRAID 428 * MegaRAID 466 * MegaRAID Express 500 * HP NetRAID 3Si and 1M Both Dell and LSI Logic have indicated that they no longer support these models in the 2.6 kernel. Moving the Home dir to new server

I have a new Centos installation that has an empty /home dir and there are no users...just root. I want to move the home directory from another server to the new one. At this time the old /home directory has been tarred with "-prf". That will keep permissions which could be a problem. Is there a simple way to move the /home directory? I ran across this and glad I did...saved my .10 worth of sanity I got left: It came from: http://kb.vmware.com/KanisaPlatform/Publishing/612/774_f.SAL_Public.html Guest Cannot See USB Device on RHEL4-x64 Host This problem was identified on VMware Server, but may affect other VMware products. When you connect a USB device to a host running the RHEL4-x64 operating system, then try to access the USB from the VMware guest, the following error message appears: The Existing driver (usbhid) could not be successfully disconnected. (operation not permitted) Unload the driver manually then try again <OK>. In this situation, you cannot unload the driver manually from the host, because it does not exist as a module—it is compiled directly into the RHEL4-x64 kernel. Normally, this situation is not a problem for VMware software, but the kernel does not support the required ioctl (control device) function to allow VMware to disconnect the device from the usbhid driver. As a workaround, you can recompile the host's kernel with usbhid as a module, then manage its removal with rmmod. However, because the usbhid driver is necessary to allow the host and guest operating systems to interact with a USB mouse and keyboard, removing the module from the recompiled kernel may not be appropriate for your system. You may need to use an upgraded kernel or a different operating system instead. thx John Rose

APIC error on CPU0: 60(60)

I have a lot of this errors in my Centos stock 4.3 version in an Intel D945gnt motherboard with a Pentium D (dual core) If I disable apic in the grub.conf (apic=off) will I get a performance hit? Im running Asterisk on that machine. 40 is Received Illegal Vector 20 is Send Illegal Vector 60 means you're getting both errors at the same time. Basically it means that the APIC bus messages are malformed. The cause can be hardware or software, it's difficult to tell.
