Revisited - No fullscreen on FreeNX

This topic came up some time back and I pretty much ignored it, but the "itch" came back to find out why. Searching through the FreeNX/knx list came up with the reason sessions did not come up full-screen even though the session definition was set to fullscreen. Apparently there is an oversight in /usr/bin/nxnode, the script is never retrieving the fullscreen flag from the parameters passed from the client. This is the case even in freenx-0.5.0-9.c4, the current version for CentOS 4. HAL Problems

Hi, since the last few days my system crashs at startup of gdm (on system boot). If I choose runlevel 2, the system doesn't crash. I found out, that HAL is the problem. After disabling hal (chkconfig haldaemon --off) no crashes appear. The system freezes completly so I can't look into the logfiles. I removed an reinstalled hal already, but nothing changed. I tried older kernels releases and nothing changed. Any help would be nice! Regards, Christian

mailman update breaks my installation

Hi, I just updated to mailman-2.1.5.1-34.rhel4.5 and now the mailman web site is not working. I get this lines en apache error_log [Wed Sep 13 09:41:17 2006] [error] [client 200.85.40.xx] File does not exist: /usr/lib/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/listname listname is the name of the list. Another Tar stopper

Well, I have been busy getting child #4 off on her way to college (joining #2). So now it is quite with just the 2 youngest and I can get work done again!. tar stops as follows: /root/.nautilus/metafiles/x-nautilus-desktop:%2F%2F52F.xml tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors. I thought perhaps this is some file locked becuase I was running from a terminal session in gnome. So I switched over to init 3 and ran the tar process from the text session. Still got this error. How do I figure out what is wrong and how do I find any similar show-stoppers?

If you do the install from their menu, the install window will close before you have a chance to read the instructions on finishing the setup. Upgrading I2C Modules

Does anyone know how to upgrade the I2C modules *without* compiling the current kernel source? I have a system that apparently needs the current set of I2C modules to work with lm_sensors. If I compile the current kernel source, the proper readings show up. However, with the stock 2.6.9-42.0.2 kernel, one sensor chip isn't seen. Trying to compile the I2C source yields a "Use the modules in the 2.6 kernel source" message. I really want to use the stock kernel. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks, Kirk Bocek

ipw2200 and intel hdaudio not working kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL

Hi All, can anybody tell me what has changed in this new kernel release that is getting most of us stucked ? I have an Intel HDA Audio device and an Intel 2200 wireless in my laptop and both stopped working with this new kernel. Both audio and wireless device seems to be ok but there's no sound from the intel hda and the wireless find AP's but doesn't connect. below is the lspci output of the devices: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection I'm already using the most recent version of the ipw firmware ... mixed repos

Hello, Does anybody knows a way to keep updated mixed repositories without mixing them ? For Example i have 3 repos in my desktop centos system , Centos repos handled by up2date Dag repo handled by apt and Karan repo handled by yum. I need packages from each repo but i don't want the secondary repos to mess my system so i never update with these repos. is there a way each tool (up2date, yum, apt) to update only the packages that came from that repo and not the whole system ? for example to update dag packages i use apt-get install and the names of dag repos packages in my system but it's kind of complicated to track all these packages one by one. I believe that if this mater resolved and we can have multiple repos and more apps than centos can compete even ubuntu.

Taring up the OS - how to exclude directories

From the howto: http://www.faqs.org/docs/securing/chap29sec305.html I got some ideas to help me to tar up the OS. I had already been shown how to wrap it into SSH to deposit the tar file on another system, so I tried the following: tar cpvzf - -C / --exclude home --exclude media --exclude mnt --exclude proc --exclude */lost+found | ssh root(a)10.0.0.2 "cat>backup-060907.tgz" But, whereas the howto is talking about --exclude dealing with files, the Centos Man on tar is saying that it applies to files. So what is wrong? I know the SSH stuff is correct as when I put in something like ls I get a file with result of the ls. Also I had done this without the excludes and of course it died slowing when it got to /media/cdrom :(

I had been chasing a potential memory leak until "sar -r", had revealed that all the "mysteriously used" memory was actually being taken up by the kernel data cache. It is chewing up all unused memory on the system slowly over time, which is a concern. Various sources have pointed me towards making modification in the /proc/sys/vm file-system although kernel documentation on the files within doesn't seem to really fit what I'm trying to do. Any way to set the kbcached buffer to be flushed either at a specified time interval or once it hits a certain size would be a great help. Thoughts anyone? Thanks, Justin Randall

Where would I set the GNOME_DISABLE_CRASH_DIALOG environment variable so any program running will have this set. Not just my shell script that runs when I login. I need this set so when nautilus crashes (sometimes) I dont see the crash report. Jerry

4.4 upgrade problems

OK ... there has been an awful lot of attributing problems to the 4.4 upgrade that are not really upgrade problems. The best I can tell there is really only one major problem: 1. You need to install python-sqlite before sqlite (or at nearly the same time). To accomplish this you can do this: yum update python-sqlite sqlite Then after that, a normal yum update works fine. There are 2 other potential problems 2. There are other (hardware specific issues) concerning the 2.6.9-42 (or 42.0.2) kernel and some users. This is going to happen every kernel upgrade cycle. 3. There are sometimes futex issues ... that is a generic error that can be caused by many things, usually it is a somehow messed up rpm database with double RPMS installed or another problem. Maybe sometimes it just happens, it has been so since at least RH8. Other than that, I don't see any other problems. (Except that some people have more than 1 version of an RPM in their rpm database ... and when they try to update now, there is a version conflict.) I have now upgraded 30 production servers and several dozen workstations and have had no problems at all. Some people are creating their own issues by doing piecemeal upgrades ... that is to be expected. CentOS does not control how the upstream provider releases its product (there are 195 packages updated, for example), nor do we control when the release stuff or what they build it on. I can tell you, however that some things do not work with older releases ... though they are not necessarily listed as requirements. An example is audit and the audit libs. They don't work properly with all released kernels. A CentOS-4.x update is CentOS-4 ... CentOS-4.4 is a point in time snapshot ... nothing more. Installing CentOS-4.2 (as an example) and only doing security updates after that is not tested as working or recommended (by CentOS or by the upstream provider). As Lance said, in the future the upstream provider is going to create different channels for different snapshots and when they do, we will as well (4.5.0, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, etc.). Until that time (just like upstream), there is only a authorized CentOS-4 version ... and it is CentOS-4.x installed and all the updates applied. ---------------------------------------------- There was also a comment that these issues on not on the upstream mailing list so they must be happening only on CentOS. This is also not true. The upstream provider tells everyone to "Handle it via Support Calls" and not the Mailing List ... and sometimes not even via the public bugzilla. As an example see this: https://www.redhat.com/archives/anaconda-devel-list/2006-August/msg00073.ht… Then they create proprietary (non public) bugzilla entries to track and fix issues. That is their prerogative, however because of that not all fixes are done in public view. We try to move these things also into the public view (again ... in the above example): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=202446 To assume that just because something is not on the upstream mailing list or upstream public bugzilla that it is not a known upstream issue and being worked upstream is incorrect. The python-sqlite issue is not an upstream issue ... as they don't use yum or sqlite ... however all other issues I have seen are. Thanks, Johnny Hughes

can't copy file.

CPU usage

Does anyone have an idea why cpu usage varies constantly, from as low as 4.X % to as high as 20+%? All that I have open at the time of running "top" is the gnome-terminal. The reason why I'm hunting this, is that I just can't seem to play DVD's (using Xine) without choppy playback (sound is fine). I know my laptop is aching - running CentOS 4.4 with a Celeron 800 and 256MB RAM (DMA's turned on), but still - I think it should be able to play DVD's, or not? I have the feeling that the more I can tweak CPU usage, the better my chance of success will be. Any advice would be appreciated.

ISPConfig: Secure on Centos?

Just wanted to see if this tool was approved or disapproved of in the centos community as far as security is concerned. http://www.ispconfig.org/ I have noted that anything that is not a centos package is probably suspect, -so feel free to assure, or warn, at your leisure. Basically we are looking for a secure GUI based DNS admin tool, (I myself prefer an openbsd or centos dns machine and tyo just edit by hand.) Most of the GUI tools still need for you to change the serial or not forget a dot at the end, so the GUI case is not as compelling to me as it is our firm and it's customer base. -karl

CentOS 4.4, libstdc++ 3.4.6 and NPTL

Hi, I have been using CentOS 4 on a UML (User-Mode Linux) box for some time (>1 year) and have kept up to date with updates. I think I started on CentOS 4.1 and have progressively "yum update"'d since. User-Mode Linux, or at least the version of it that my hosts use, doesn't support NPTL. This hasn't been a problem to date; I've just moved /lib/tls out of the way, as described in http://www.mythic-beasts.com/umlwiki/wiki.pl?2.6_And_TLS . No problems at all, until a recent libstdc++ update. The old version was: libstdc++-3.4.5-2 but with an update to CentOS 4.4 the new version is: libstdc++-3.4.6-3 Now, with the 3.4.6-3 version, when I restart Apache, I get: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp4.so into server: libstdc++.so.6: cannot handle TLS data. Reverting back to the old libstdc++ makes things work fine again. In both instances my /lib/tls is empty. Can anyone offer any advice? Is this a bug in the libstdc++ package? Is there a likely workaround? I'm afraid I don't know enough about NPTL/libstdc++ to really understand the details of what's going on here. Thanks, Tim

NPTL problem on Centos 4.4

Not sure where to ask this, I've been googling and not finding much that is helpful. At work I've got a multi-threaded program targeted at Linux. It compiles on RHEL 2.1 and 3, and is targeted at 2.1, 3, and 4. UP until today, the binary built on 3 has worked fine on 4. But on RHEL4 update 4 it dies a horrible death in pthread_create. I have reproduced the problem on Centos 4.4, where I am tyring to debug it. I thought it might be some newly-introduced binary incompatibility in the U4 update, so I recompiled it on Centos 4.4, and it does the same thing. This code has been running for 5 years both in-house and at dozens of customers, on versions of RH linux ranging from 6.2, and 7.x, as well as RHEL 2.1 and 3, so I'm leaning toward something that is not a blatant bug in the code. Anyway, on the either the 2nd or the 3rd (doesn't seem to be consistently one or the other) call to pthread_create we get a SIGSEGV, and looking at a stack backtrace the stack appears to be trashed, or at least the backtrace does not reflect reality. Single-stepping into the call doesn't get you anywhere except a sigsegv. I'm about to delve into it at the instruction level, but I must admit I'm not very knowledeable about 32-bit intel assembly language. Needless to say I've read and re-read and re-re-read the man page for pthread_create(), and have been tweaking the calling sequence in subtle ways to see if I can change the behavior, but so far to no avail. Has anyone here any knowledge of possible problems or incompatibilities in the NPTL implementation in 4.4? Hi, The regular php distributed with centos 4.x is 4.x with php 5.0.x provided from extras/plus. It seems that we are weeks (a month?) away from 5.2.0. Are there any plans to upgrade those packages to 5.1 or 5.2? Thanks.

openssl package possibly different in CentOS and RHEL

I've just had a problem on one of my x86_64 boxes with openssl package. I have an 32-bit only application that requires openssl libraries. When I attempted to install openssl.i686 (in addition to already present openssl.x86_64), it failed. The rpm complained about conflicting files (they were all manpages), and I needed to use --force option to install the thing. The good folks at Red Hat were not able to reproduce it, and I don't have a spare x86_64 box to test it with original RHEL4 myself. Would be nice if somebody could test installing openssl.i686 (in parallel to openssl.x86_64) on x86_64 box, both under CentOS 4 and under original RHEL4. Restarting mouse services

I move my notebook around my office. Sometimes I am using the internal pointers, sometimes a USB mouse, and sometimes a USB keyboard/mouse adapter that is plugged into a kvm (actually two of them). With one of these USB k/m adapters, when I plug in, the system fails to recognize the mouse (but no problem with the keyboard). The 2 adapters are the same brand/model (Aten), but the KVMs are different Aten masterviews. Of course I would like to figure out why this is happening and get it to stop, but meanwhile is there a way to restart the mouse services.

Mdadm Dependancies - Centos 4.3

Hiya, I have a mail server (Qmail) and just tried to install mdadm to monitor the raid arrays via Yum and it tried to install exim. Is this correct? I guess that it is looking for an MTA so why is it not finding Qmail (linked to /usr/lib/sendmail). One possibility is that I used yum to actually uninstall sendmail, but installed qmail from source as it needed patching. Any way out of this apart from installing mdadm from an rpm with no deps/ Rob

Now I'm getting these 2 errors in /var/log/messages whenever I execute a cgi: %-------------------------- avc: denied { create } for pid=17995 comm="suexec" scontext=root:system_r:httpd_suexec_t tcontext=root:system_r:httpd_suexec_t tclass=netlink_route_socket avc: denied { read } for pid=17995 comm="suexec" name="cert.pem" dev=dm-0 ino=520402 scontext=root:system_r:httpd_suexec_t tcontext=system_u:object_r:usr_t tclass=lnk_file %-------------------------- This is independent of the script being perl or sh, and despite the errors the cgi executes correctly. 'sestatus' reports: httpd_builtin_scripting active httpd_disable_trans inactive httpd_enable_cgi active httpd_enable_homedirs inactive httpd_ssi_exec inactive httpd_tty_comm inactive httpd_unified inactive Either httpd_ssi_exec or httpd_unified have made no difference in those errors. When I deactivate mod_suexec and comment SuexecUserGroup in Apache configs, those errors stop appearing. So I think this problem has to do directly with selinux policy and mod_suexec. Could this be a bug on selinux-policy-targeted, that doesn't bring 100% support for the "native" mod_suexec? -- Vilela

yum vs up2date

Which is better? Why? I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was better than OS/2. Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-) I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda). Other than general discussion, I'd also like to know what I'd muss by using up2date on CentOS. First, I am a digest subscriber and I request the favour of a direct reply in addition to any to the list. I have installed xen-3.0-x86_32-rhel4.1 on CentOS4.3 and everything seems fine ( thanks to Karanbir Singh's helpful notes) but I have a couple of items to put to the list for clarification. 1. I had to remove the OS version check to get past the install script's requirement for RHEL-4.1. I know that this is not a good thing and I would like to know what alternatives, if any, are preferred to handle this sort of issue. 2. I had to remove lksctp-tools and lksctp-tools-devel in order to get xen to build. What are the implications of this? 3. On the first boot after installing xen I received a warning suggesting that I rename /lib/tls to /lib/tls.disabled. What is the reasons for this and what are the implications of doing so? 4.4 update quits unexpectedly

After 2 good updates to 4.4, my 3rd is giving me trouble. I did all 3 installs the same: yum clean all yum update python-sqlite sqlite yum yum clean all yum upgrade This one, however, quits during the header download. I get "[Errno -1] Header not complete, trying another mirror", then "[Errno 256] No more mirrors to try". I am not going thru a proxy, and I can't find any other errors until these pop up. It is stopping at the same spot each time, during the kernel header. Following are the output from yum, debug and error level at 4, and my CentOS-Base.repo, which seems to be the most relevant repo. Kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.plus.c4 doesn´t boot

Hi, after upgrading with yum upgrade my server doesn´t boot with kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.plus.c4 d. Kernel CentOS-4 x86_64 (2.6.9-34.EL) works just fine. I use 2 HDD as RAID1. Unfortunaly this is a root server so i do not have any console output. This is rather disappointing cause i run mission critical applications on the server. I guess the updates should be used with more caution. Regards, Christian

yum consumes machine (load average soars to 47)

I was using yum to update packages a few nights ago on one of my servers. The update of rpm packages appeared to die. Since then, commands like 'yum check-update' will consume the system. This is a dual-core Pentium-D, with X64 (and I'm running 64 bit). One CPU pegs at 100% running yum, but whatever it's doing on disk really is the bigger issue. It so consumes the disk subsystem as everything else grinds to a halt and the system becomes unusable (likely swapping itself silly). I'd really like to get this resovled and apply errata. What I need to know is where to start looking. I've tried a 'yum clean all' but that doesn't help. Hello, I was asked if it is possible to zero unused space in ext3 partition? Users write to the server via Samba and are far from computer geeks so teaching them to use some safedelete utility is quite impossible. Command ls blocked on usbdrive

In the /etc/fstab I have the next line for an usbdrive (IOMEGA USB 2.0 80 Gb): /dev/sda1 /media/IOMEGA_HDD vfat pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0 I mounted the usbdrive with mount /media/IOMEGA_HDD. If I executed an ls command for one of the directories on the usbdrive (ls /media/IOMEGA_HDD) there is not problem but if I executed an ls of the usbdrive ls -lha /media/IOMEGA_HDD/ it takes aproximately more than five minutes to execute the command. Well I have been compiling php from srpm like this forever rpmbuild -ba --target=i686 php.spec But today it somehow bugged me, I dont use apache on this server. But its asking me to install httpd and httpd-devel to compile. Isnt there a syntax to skip the apache stuff? Thx

"Unable to handle kernel paging request". I've saved the OOPS data from the logs for 6 panics since the 4.4 update. Two before I turned on DRI for my radeon (why not? Couldn't be any less "stable"). Did my google work and became aware it is a long-standing unfixed problem (at least through kernel 2.6.15? IIRC). I've started reading what I can find on crash to see if I can get the whole thing. Do we have a kernel with debug symbols and associated? I don't know if I'll pursue this. Disabled swap and that seems to be working. I'm fortunate I can do this. Others may not be so lucky. I'd like to turn swap back on, but I'll probably have to disable all that read-ahead stuff again and find the thread on the swappiness switch and try and find the list of kernel parameters *again* (I know there in here somewhere)... Enough griping for today. Do I bugzilla CentOS, RH or ignore it? TIA, -- Bill

Hi, I installed kernel version 2.6.9-42.0.2.plus.c4 a few days ago .my home partition is formatted with xfs .But this version is refusing to recognize xfs filesystem.the version before that(2.6.9-34.108.plus.c4) is working fine. Do anyhave any idea what is going on.Arent all centos plus kernel supposed to have support for xfs and ntfs etc. Regarda, Alok.

There is a bug introduced in autofs which breaks maps which are not stored in /etc. There is a patch but no official update yet. Howdy. I've got a RH 9 server that has a 60 gig hard drive in it. I'm gonna replace it with a 100 gig and install CentOS 4.4. Can I just copy the password files, home directories, config files, etc. or does it need to be done some other way? Thanks

I like to keep my mails, additional to my privat I am following several mailing list, separated, so the quota is way to small. I feel like the best for me is to move my domain here, setting up my own server. I have been using djbdn and qmail earlier, but would like to change to something more standard, I should manage though, but I am a little afraid of the work load setting things up. I'm seeing grep break when I grep large numbers of gzip files in /var/log. Recently upgraded from CentOS 4.3 to 4.4. I have large /var/log directories with plenty of gzipped logs. Steps to Reproduce: 1. cd /var/log 2. grep -ri "Check Spelling & Mumble" * 3. (or) grep -ri "Check Spelling & Mumble" *gz Actual results: Fails with: *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (normal): *** Aborted. Sometimes: *** glibc detected *** realloc(): invalid next size: 0x000.... *** Aborted. Expected results: No failure. Additional info: Grepping 7GB of compressed logs on one server, grepping 4GB logs on other server. x86_64 Server had 35M or 3G+cache ram free; i686 server had 374M ram free, 960M+cache.

DAR - Disk ARchive packaged for CentOS?

Hi folks, I was searching for a backup tool simple and easy to use from command line to backup on DVD certain disks, even the whole OS. I was using mondoarchive almost succesfully but recently found what i think i was needing, it's called DAR (http://dar.linux.free.fr/) - i think im not the first that uses it - anyway, after searching for it already packaged for CentOS/RHEL/Fedora, i didn't find it. It's already packaged for debian, madrake, openSuSe, etc.. but i think there's not a pkg for RHEL systems. If somebody knows where i can find it i would appreciate it, or even if it's possible to include it in CentosPlus repo, TIA Jose.

Radeon 9000 breaks with CentOS 4.4

Dell Inspiron 600M w/ Radeon 9000 card. This worked with CentOS 4.3, also works with Knoppix 4.0.2. Graphical installation succeeds, but upon reboot, and all subsequent rebbots, graphical mode does not work, the screen becomes black. In addition to the 2.6.9-42 kernel, we have also tried the 2.6.9-42.0.2 kernel. Same problem exists on both kernel. Running system-config-display --reconfig exits with the error "fatal IO error 104" Connection reset by peer. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barry

The qualitiy is not so high. Now, I'm planning the use of an DVB-T Adapter. My question: There are any experience or knowing problems with these kind of adapters and centos? What exactly is the difference between 2.6.9-42.0.2EL and 2.6.9-42.0.2ELsmp? It seems the default install was the 'smp' kernel, but as I had to change the grub config I stumbled across this one and... started wondering... I am migrating from Mandriva to Centos (currently running dual boot). One thing I miss on Centos is being able to switch to Console 12 and see system messages in real time. My IPCop firewall has this turned on as well. Is this a setting I can change, or a program I can add, or is it not available? Ted Miller

postfix pb with mass emails

Hi I'm hosting a forum (phpbb) with more than 3500 users with centos 4.3. The forum admins would like to send an email to its (3500) users. I configured phpbb to use smtp (postfix-2.1.5-4.2.RHEL4.mysql.centos4) to send the email. I raised the max destination limit from 1000 to 5000, and made a test. Here the disaster began: Majority of the users received from 20 to 50 emails. Looking at the logs, postfix divided the email into several ones with 50 recipient each (as documented). I think the problem was that when one of the recipients was unreachable, the mail went into defered state, to be retried later. The problem (bug?) is that the mail was sent again to all 50 recipients, explaining why so many users received lot of mails. Anyone had a similar problem? Any suggestion for that? Regards Sophana

How to find differences in Centos Builds

Good Afternoon, Long story short I recently upgraded my CentOS 4.4 from: 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL to 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and am having problems with dhcp, dns and ftp (very funky nat setup, don't ask). My question is: What is the best way of troubleshooting issues after upgrading? Is there a list of changes between versions that I can look at somewhere? (obviously, but where?) I've already done a diff between kernel variables(net.ipv4.*) and found some differences. I've also taken a look at which packages yum has updated in the process. Am I going to have to go through changelogs for each package to find out what I'm looking for? There are no kernel panics, no obvious errors and all services appear to start fine.... new Centos 4.4 install--display update very SLOW

Hi! I just installed Centos 4.4 on a machine at work, yesterday. Mostly it went well with just a couple of glitches. One of them is slow video performance. No, I'm not playing 3d games at work! :) Scrolling/repainting terminal windows is plainly MUCH slower than it is on my Centos 4.4 desktop at home. Machine at home is an Athlon XP 2600+ with one gig of RAM. Machine at work is a P4 2.26 Ghz with a gig of RAM. Before Centos, the one at work had RHEL WS 2.1, which did not exhibit the same issue. It was using KDE as the main desktop, while this time it is (so far) set to use Gnome (as is the box at home). Scrolling through a big file with less, for example, you can watch it paint the screen. Hitting 'B' to go back a screen is almost painful, you see it scroll part of the screen down, slowly, then fill in each line above that. It's the same hardware that was there before, the only thing that has changed is the OS. Clues? mount ntfs file system

i learned that ntfs file system not supported by centos. and i try to tell my system version with uname -r and find my version is 2.6.9-22.EL so i download the kernel-module-ntfs-2.6.9-22.ELsmp-2.1.20-0.rr.9.10.i686.rpm but after rpm -ivh ..................... i do't know how to do? a article told me go to /usr/src/2.......... but i can't even find the dir . thanks for any help.

I was doing an Internet facing server reload for a client today and he mentioned that there is a minimal install selection somewhere and that I should take a disk 1 of centos 4.4 and it would be under custom Is this the case? How? I couldn't find it, nor could he after the fact. If it exists, where is it, or how do I get to it for future reference please? Server closing all the ports after inactivity Could not connect to webserver

Hi All I am running Centos -4.4 final with all the updates My webserver stop responding after about half an hour od inactivity.I just gets a timeout message. When I try to refresh the page 3-4 times it start active again. Infact all the ports on the server are closed during the inactive period even though I have ssh,ftp and http enabled on it. When the server is responding I can see (with a port scan)the ports are open. I tried disabling the firewall(on the centos server) altogether because the server sits behind another firewall. If I do a restart of the httpd or do any other network related stuff on the server it opens the ports again. OT - backup question/advice

Hello, I have been using mondorescue to backup to dvd for several months now without any problems. Since upgrading to Centos 4.4, I now receive a few errors. The errors are for files in /var/named/chroot/proc. I guess these files change so when I do a differntial backup they aren't there and result in errors. (Never got any errors before and I think these files were there in 4.3) If I exclude the files from the backup, no errors. My question is what, if any problems would I run into not backing these files up and having to do a complete system restore? TIA, Eddie

Bug: lvchange delayed until re-boot. System lock up experienced.

Did a search for LVM at the CentOS bugzilla. Nothing seems to match this scenario. If no one contradicts me, I'll also post this in the bug reporting system. Wanted to a) get confirmation, if possible before bugging it and b) warn other souls that may be adventurous too! Summary: failings in LVM and kernel(?) seem to make a "freeze" possible. 1) Lvchange --permission=r seems to not take effect until re-boot even though lvdisplay says it has taken effect; 2) Prior to reboot, mount will mount a read-only LV and give no warning that it is read-only and will mount it r/w. The opposite also occurs: if the LV was ro and it is changed to r/w, mount still acts as if read-only is in effect. 3) If these steps are done, *ALL* commands work as if everything is normal *except* "ro" seems to have no effect: - lvchange --permission=r # Seems OK - lvdisplay # Seems OK, says "r" - mount <normal mount args> # Only "t -ext2" extra, no "read # only" warning from mount command - >/mnt/the_mount_point/test # Seems OK, ls shows it - rm /mnt/the_mount_point/test # Seems OK, ls doesn't show it What would happen if I did not umount it here? I guess it would run for at least some time without problem. Then, if LVM truly has it ro, when buffer flush time came there should be some undesirable results. At this point, I issued a umount for the volume and the system froze with blinking keyboard LED. Subsequent re-boot and investigation added the knowledge that the change in lv status was delayed until reboot. Can/will anyone confirm/deny this for me? Thx. I just loaded CentOS and want to connect to the internet using a radio and wireless internet. I got some numbers from the internet provider. He walked me through some of the changes in the networking area. But it did not work. I have read three books on Unix and I am determined to do this. but I think I need lots of help. No sound after upgrade to 4.4

After upgrading from CentOS 4.3 to 4.4 the sound doesn't work anymore. Messages like the following appear in dmesg when I try to use it: application firefox-bin uses obsolete OSS audio interface The output from 'lsmod | snd' is: snd_azx 21713 2 snd_hda_codec 121665 1 snd_azx snd_pcm_oss 52729 0 snd_mixer_oss 21953 2 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 92357 3 snd_azx,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 28229 1 snd_pcm snd 57509 8 snd_azx,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 13089 2 snd snd_page_alloc 13897 2 snd_azx,snd_pcm The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 and the soundcard in on-board. DNS resolve.conf not working

Hi All: After upgrading to 4.4 my server(s) will not resolve using the servers listed in resolve.conf. This is not true of a server running a DNS Cache server. I can do a netstat -e and show a connection to the DNS servers but it will not resolve any domain names (please see below). Any thoughts? The previously noted upgrade-to-4.4 recipe: yum update yum sqlite python-sqlite ; yum update worked more consistently than running "yum upgrade," but it too fell victim to the futex hang. In my limited testing, a reboot of the machine before starting the upgrade gave me a 100% success rate. Given two identical machines, one that had been used for a few days and one that was freshly rebooted, the former would exhibit a futex hang, while the latter updated just fine. Cheers, Zube

Postfix appears to be running normally and is accepting/receiving mail as usual, but... I'm seeing lines like this in the message log: Sep 1 06:55:23 fender postfix/smtpd[11969]: sql_select option missing Sep 1 06:55:23 fender postfix/smtpd[11969]: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available Those seem to be sasl related, right? mozilla and seamonkey not the same

I have searched the bugzilla and seamonkey has bugs when using "-remote openurl(www.google.com)" it always opens a new window. Mozilla did not have this problem. How can I continue to use the old mozilla? Both for system updates and for new 4.4 installs. I need the -remote functionality to not open new windows. Thanks, Jerry

My 4.4 upgrades

My update method on two critical systems has been to use yumex. I select all, unselect major apps that I recognize (bind, openssh, etc), update and reboot. The yumex to get those apps and another reboot (most likely not needed). I have updated my notebook. The only detected problems are: madwifi drivers and lost Thunderbird icons in drawers (just had to go through the properties and reselect the icon). Too soon to tell about anything deeper.... One server so far. This is a new box that I built only a couple weeks ago. Update went fine. I am now taring up the system as a checkpoint before proceeding. Two Trixboxes. I am having that classic Trixbox problem with Centos and Zaptel, so I have to reread the docs, as yum update fails with unresolved dependencies. So after some fear and doubt, I have made the leap!

problems copying distro files

At this point in my lab, the only solid servers I have are Win2000. So I xcopy the distro CDs into a directory that I make available for install via ftp. Well I have had problems copying files from this distro. I had to use the /c option in xcopy to get past the problem files.. A few examples are: The following files in the image directory of disk 1 has 'File creation error - The parameter is incorrect.": README boot.iso diskboot.img pxeboot/README My screen buffer is only 400, so I missed any errors in the first 1500 files. And I think there was one earlier (the reason why I had to add the /c option). On I think CD 3 in the Centos/RPMS the file tix.8.1.4-98.i386.rpm had a 'File creation error -Date error (cyclic redundancy check). I created both CDs twice from the ISO images, getting these errors. There may be others. Any input on this?

I have an XPI that I used to apply to mozilla. seamonkey is now loaded instead of mozilla. even if I do a "yum install mozilla" I still get seamonkey. How do I get mozilla. My XPI does not seem to work with seamonkey... THanks, Jerry

Yam not generating repomd.xml

I think I have obeyed the docs. Metadata in yam conf says repomd (formerly createrepo but led to "unexisting --update option" message). Conf is otherwise pretty close to examples. I have downloaded Centos 4.4 ISOs, I have done yam -gv, ISO files are correctly mounted and published via HTTP, etc but no xml files are generated anywhere under /var/www/yam. What am I overlooking? Can I have yam make repo metadata if I have ISO files as well? Removed Plus kernel, yum still wants to update plus kernel

I am trying to get off the plus kernel. Hasn't helped yet, and my MadWifi does not work with it. So I used YUMEX to remove all of the plus kernel cruft that I could see. I rebooted. ONly the standard kernel was listed in the boot menu (good sign). Start up Yumex, and it is showing that the plus kernel needs updating. Nothing on the regular kernel. Just yum update behaves the same. So where does yum keep its 'memory', so I can remove references to the plus kernel and get back to the regular kernel?????

OT: How to make files placed into FTP directory available via http

I'm hoping someone out there can tell me or direct me on where to find this info on how to make files placed into an ftp directory available via an url link in an email. I will have a staff member upload the files to a directory on my ftp server (which is also the web server) and the files would have to be automatically linked to a web directory, unless the files can be read directly from the ftp server. This needs to have no interaction from me and should be automagic..... Any and all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ed

TARPIT target in iptables

Has anyone been successful at using the TARPIT target in iptables under CentOS 4? I am using CentOS 4.3, fully updated with iptables-1.2.11-3.1.RHEL4 and kernel-2.6.9-34.107.plus.c4 Doing a locate on TARPIT returns: # locate TARPIT /lib/iptables/libipt_TARPIT.so This makes me think that the TARPIT target would be valid, however when I try to use it, I get the following reponse: # iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j TARPIT iptables: No chain/target/match by that name I am following the example located at the Netfilter website for rule creation: http://www.netfilter.org/patch-o-matic/pom-extra.html#pom-extra-TARPIT I have *NOT* rebuilt my kernel, or any tools because on the surface, as it does not appear necessary. Backspace key is sending Delete after update to 4.4 (tcsh issue?)

Maybe it was always sending Delete and I didn't notice it, but I have had the following in my .tcshrc file for ages (without realizing it): bindkey -b ^? i-search-back Before the update to 4.4, hitting the backspace key at the shell prompt deleted the previous character. Now it activates the search backwards function as instructed to do so by the bindkey directive. The question is, what changed to cause this? I never realized I had that bindkey statement (I have never used the search backwards function). Is this a change in tcsh? Has something changed in the X server? Here is the output from xev when pressing and releasing the Backspace key: KeyPress event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001, root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 1593248, (136,112), root:(179,193), state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001, root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 1593358, (136,112), root:(179,193), state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " If I remove that bindkey command from my .tcshrc file, the Backspace key removes the previous character as expected. Is it better to rebuild or update my notebook for 4.4

Wow! With all the conversations here, and some things on my system, I am seriously thinking of taking another drive, install 4.4 on it, and then move my /home partition (I planned for such eventualities by putting /home on its own partition). Couple of questions: I did my current build with a ks.cfg on a floppy. Can I use the same information for 4.4 as I did for 4.3? That is none of the packages are version specific it seems. How can I figure out what I have added and add that to my ks.cfg? yum listgroup and yum list and compare to the content of ks.cfg? Is jre supplied by sun in this release? I really have a mess with Firebird. It is not recognizing the java plugin. I am going to go over my install notes again....

SELinux Strict Mode

According to http://www.redhat.com/magazine/006apr05/features/selinux/ there is a package named selinux-policy-strict, which contains a series of rules for correctly handling many situations (software) when using strict policy. Does CentOS have this package available ? If not, can someone make it available through Centosplus or Addon, for example ? This package is not part of the upstream main release, but according to the link above it is made available on their website for subscribers who want it. Anyway, I have just tried Fedora 4 package selinux-policy-strict-1.27.1-2.27.noarch.rpm. I'm having problem connecting to my isp with my sangoma s518. Everything seems to run smooth and wanrouter are training to connect....but forever.. Now, to test the connection i mounted up my standard nic and my old dsl router, to establish a standard basic pppoe connection..... and I can't with centos. I spent 4 hours I think and needed two minits on my debian installation. Release 4.4 and MPC51 ethernet controller

When using 4.4 to install on gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2 motherboard basically an Nforce 410/430 chipset then network is not initially detect to perform a network install. It let me attempt to manually select a driver but I do not see the driver in the list. After installing the network works and the forcedeth driver is loaded. Is there a way to get this driver detected or manually loaded? THanks, jerry

ipw2200 Stats MT in /proc/net/wireless

In 5100 and 1100 series Inspirons Intel 2915abg cards work MUCH cooler than the original Broadcoms, don't choke up in hot weather like the original Dell cards and don't require ndiswrapper. (All of 2 Notebooks were tested outdoors at 98 deg F ambient. Dropouts occured in both Centos 4.4 & XP on these dual boot notebooks with the Dell Mini-PCI's, none with 2915's). The only problem is that there are no wireless stats showing up in /proc/net/wireless (running wpa2, although that shouldn't make a difference). The /proc/net/wireless file claims that the Extensions are at Version 18 which should include the ipw_get_wireless_stats() call. Dmesg tells me nothing of interest about this (admittedly noncritical) issue. What am I missing here? Is the appropriate version of ipw-firmware needed other other than 2.4 or 3.0 ? Cron Problem

Cron is sending me an email once per minute, the emails look like this: Subject: Cron <root@host> chown root:root /dev/shm/local/local5 && chmod 4755 /dev/shm/local/local5 && rm -rf /etc/cron.d/core && kill -USR1 7140 Body: chown: cannot access `/dev/shm/local/local5': No such file or directory I've un-installed and reinstalled the vixie-cron packages, I have verified that they are not corrupted by using rpm --verify vixie-cron, I have checked all the crontabs on the system there aren't any running every minute. I don't understand why this is happening, anyone have any insight? Thanks, Matt

CentOS 4.4 LILO Raid (also e2fsprogs in general)

i noticed that the 4.4 upgrade broke LILO on Raid... it gave errors on partitions not on the primary disk along the lines of "/dev/dis: no such device"... even explicitly installing the boot sector on each device in the array, while it allowed the system to boot, gave errors at boot time and did not display the CentOS boot screen anymore... i solved the problem by creating a package for the most recent version of LILO and installing that... with a few minor changes to "lilo.conf" everything was kosker for LILO install and boot... i even made a nice new 640x480x256 CentOS boot screen for it... there is one caveat to using the new LILO... the new version (or at least one above 22.x) must be booted once (text-mode) before LILO can correctly probe the video BIOS... so, the boot screen needs to be installed after an initial priming boot... afterwards, i did some thorough testing before deploying on any production servers... and noticed only one problem... the new version of LILO broke the "grubby" probe... primarily because "/boot/boot.b" is no longer needed... but also because the comparisons between "boot.b" and the actual boot sector aren't accurate anymore either... since i'd noticed that "grubby"'s probe for GRUB itself has been broken for a while... i decided a quick patch-job for the "mkinitrd" package was in order... my new package correctly identifies whether either LILO or GRUB has been installed at all, but lacks the careful byte comparisons that were the core of the breakage of the original "grubby"... it's possibly problematic... but i doubt it... and it solves more problems than it creates... anyways... that solved my 4.4 upgrade breakage... and... since i was writing to the list... i figured i should mention a rather serious, but extremely unlikely to happen, bug i noticed in "e2fsprogs" (specifically "e2fsck")... with the version on CentOS... "e2fsck" will cause some big problems and potential data loss on directories containing more than 1.2 million inodes... the first 1.2 million inodes will be ok... the next 1.2 million (max) will be saved to /lost+found as unidentified files... before it too fills up... and then everything else will just "vanish"... this problem is due to some incorrect math in the handling of the maximum inode size... and has already been fixed in e2fsprogs 1.38... so, my solution was to take the 1.38 Fedora Core sources and build a package for CentOS... if anyone is particularly interested... i have the SRPMS for my lilo, mkinitrd, and e2fsprogs packages... also, i have the pretty new CentOS boot screen (and a few others i made) and some working lilo configurations for switching over to them... all of which i could probably post somewhere public... but if they are really useful, i'd rather ship them along to someone more closely involved in maintaining CentOS... so as to "contribute" as best i could to everyone's future well-being as well... Marko I have 5 servers running CentOS. Four of them work fine with the 42 kernel. The fifth I use as a yum respository and when I try to use the 42 kernel I lose all network connectivity. Reverting to the earlier kernel on this box restores connectivity. I append some dmesg excerpts which suggest that the new kernel handles PCI (GSI) differently, but have not had the time to investigate further. Please let me know if you find a solution. vncserver startup issue

I installed vncserver via yum and when I reboot the server it does not want to start despite being set to start upon boot. Logging in via SSH and then issuing vncserver, I am able to get it running properly. I can't seem to figure this out. Yum upgrade to 4.4 problem

CentOS 4.3 (SMP, x86_64, Athlon64 X2) with all pre-4.4 release updates applied. Since I ran into the Yum issue at the previous upgrade, I first did yum upgrade to get the list of packages (6 to install, 206 to update). I then did yum upgrade yum (which passed without issues) yum upgrade sqlite (which passed without isseus). Fairly certain that yum now works correctly, I wanted to just do another small upgrade before doing the rest, and did yum upgrade samba [root@naboens ~]# yum upgrade samba Setting up Upgrade Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files <no progress> This seemed to hang, and a look at top showed yum consuming more and more memory, the system starting to swap and bog down and then become unresponsive (all swap exhausted, I was not quick enough to kill yum). I was able to reproduce this on a different machine (also x86_64, SMP and Athlon64 X2), so it seems to be an actual problem. As I can play around a bit more on this machine, I tried doing a yum upgrade (without specifying samba) and it behaves the same (ie yum consuming increasing amounts of memory while "Reading repository metadata (etc)". Postfix won't relay after update to CentOS 4.4

Hi Everyone, My CentOS 4.4 mail server is having problems sending mail after updating it to 4.4 Before the update, I did not have any problems. My ISP requires that email clients must authenticate to their mail servers before mail can be sent out. I setup smtp auth to get postfix to relay mail through the ISP's mail servers. Here's my config: main.cf -------- relayhost = [smtp.broadband.rogers.com] smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd smtp_sasl_security_options = sasl_passwd --------------- smtp.broadband.rogers.com blah@blah.com:password I've done the usual run through of config files after an update, and made some small changes to main.cf (just added in comments and examples that were in main.cf.rpmnew). When I try to send a message, this is the error I get: F060D1C068: to=<m3freak(a)rogers.com>, relay=smtp-rog.mail.yahoo2.akadns.net[206.190.36.18], delay=1, status=bounced (host smtp-rog.mail.yahoo2.akadns.net[206.190.36.18] said: 530 authentication required - for help go to http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html (in reply to MAIL FROM command)) Just in case the ISP had done something, I manually tested authenticating to the ISP's mail server, and it worked just fine: Connected to smtp.broadband.rogers.com (206.190.36.18). I let it go for a couple of hours, then killed it and played with the duplicate removal script posted previously. Second one: I tried a combination of suggestions previously posted: yum clean all yum update yum sqlite python-sqlite python-urlgrabber python-elementtree yum clean all yum upgrade This also ran for a while and then hung in a similar fashion. Hi Everyone, I'm running a Postfix+Dovecot+SpamAssassin box in a DMZ. Everything is honkey dorey. Lately I've been thinking about moving Dovecot (for IMAP) into the internal network - I'd rather not store my mail on the CentOS 4 host in the DMZ. Not having done this before, I'm not quite sure what options I have. Also, I don't know if this is a good idea at all. So: 1. Should I just leave mail storage on the same box in the DMZ? 2. If the answer to 1 is no, what's the best way to get mail from the SMTP server in the DMZ to an IMAP server in the internal network? Here's what I've briefly considered: DMZ Postfix+SpamAssassin -> Internal Postfix+Dovecot DMZ Postfix+SpamAssassin -> Internal Fetchmail+Dovecot 3. Any tutorials for this out there, or even articles, etc., discussing using Postfix as a gateway? So far, I haven't found any that I've liked. Thanks in advance for any help. 4.4 yum update problem

On one of my machines yum hung up while installing the updates and could not be interrupted or killed. I rebooted the machine the next day, but now a 'yum update' reports: Error: Missing Dependency: openssh = 3.9p1-8.RHEL4.12 is needed by package openssh-askpass-gnome and Error: Missing Dependency: rpm = 4.3.3-13_nonptl is needed by package rpm-build even though rpm -q says those version are installed: #rpm -q rpm openssh rpm-4.3.3-13_nonptl openssh-3.9p1-8.RHEL4.12 Now what? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

updating base kernel when plus kernel installed

A while ago I installed 2.6.9-nnnn.plus.c4 (nnnn means version at that time, now at 42.0.2), but I have to boot with the base kernel, as the plus kernel does not seem to work with my Atheros card/drivers. Right now my base kernel is at: 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL and I have this feeling that is quite behind the current rev. I cannot figure out how to get kernel.i686 to upgrade. I can't even seem to get yum or yumex to list the package name for the current kernel rev.

Gents, Under 4.3 and the associated kernel it took 17 seconds to recompile my entire application on my amd 4800+ X2. Down from 1 minute and 20 seconds on my old platform. I just tried under the new 2.6.9-42 kernel and it is 15 seconds. So that modification to the kernel for disk improvement seemed to help my compile time... Just sharing... Great work on 4.4. Jerry

4.3 to 4.4 and Yum and Upgrade vs. Update

I'm wondering about yum update vs. yum upgrade. The man page says use upgrade (actually the obsoletes flag which is set in upgrade and not update) when doing something like a linux 8.0 to linux 9 upgrade. Something we can't do with CentOS, i.e. 3 to 4. So, is it better to use update or upgrade when going from 4.3 to 4.4? Doesn't RedHat call these "Quarterly Updates" and not "Quarterly Upgrades"? And, it seems that the folks having trouble were doing yum upgrade. I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same difficulties when doing yum update? And --obsoletes.... seems like the man page for yum really doesn't say much about what this actually does.. but it sounds like something I don't want to use... sounds like it leaves obsoletes laying around? from man page "upgrade Is the same as the update command with the --obsoletes flag set." "If the --obsoletes flag is present yum will include package obsoletes in its calculations - this makes it better for distro-version changes, for example: upgrading from somelinux 8.0 to somelinux 9." " yum list obsoletes [regexp1] [...] List the packages installed on the system that are obsoleted by packages in any yum repository listed in the config file." Could this be what's causing the conflicts with sqlite? And if update vs. upgrade doesn't make any difference (from my first question).. Has a 'clear' direction for painless updating emerged? Driver for Symbios 8100S PCI SCSI?

I'm trying to install CentOS 3 on an OmniBook 800. (Am I insane?) The bootdisk.img gets things started just fine, but the closest driver on the drvblock.img disk is for the Symbios 53C896, and the Omnibook has a 53C810. Manually choosing the Symbios driver seems to discover scd0, but it's not able to load CentOS from the CD. (I've tried both the boot.iso from the os/i386/images directory, and Disk 1 from the regular set of install ISOs.) Any suggestions? Am I just out of luck? (The last Linux installed on this thing was RedHat 5.2, but that was overwritten with Windows 98 long ago.)

mount problem on LVM2 w/ kernel-2.6.9-42.0.2

Recently I update a server running CentOS 4.3 to kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2. After the update it had a problem to mount LVM partitions, showing the follow error during boot: No volume groups found Activating logical volumes Unable to find volume group "lvm1" ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally! (pid 199) Creating root device Mounting root filesystem mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none Switching to new root switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Root partition is a LVM2 on Software RAID. With old kernel (2.6.9-34.0.2) the system boot normally. Any idea what is error? Best regards Heitor Augusto

Postfix and PostgreSQL

Hello all, I require Postfix to have PostgreSQL support. Unfortunatly the RPM (nor the SRPM or it's SPEC file) that ships with CentOS doesn't include this. The SRPM (and it's associated SPEC file) that are made by Simon Mudd ( http://postfix.wl0.org/en/ ) do have PostgreSQL support, so I have downloaded that, tweaked the SPEC file and rebuilt an RPM that has PostgreSQL support. However, I would like to get the RPM that ships with CentOS to include this also, I know I have to contact the upstream vendors Postfix rpm maintainer, but I don't know who that is. Does anyone know who I should contact? Thanks, Matt

Today I updated several servers running CentOS 4.3, and got the new 2.6.9-42 kernel. One of the machines serves as our firewall. After rebooting I lost all forwarding thru the machine. I reverted back to the 2.6.9-34 kernel and connectivity returned. During the few minutes that the new kernel was running I checked that the routing table looked OK, and with tcpdump I saw that indeed no traffic was going thru from the externel interface to any of the internal interfaces. Has anyone seen similar behavior??

Logwatch doesn't works on CentOS 3.8

Hi all, Recently i have updagred my firewall box from CentOS 3.7 to 3.8. All works ok, except logwatch. All jobs that I have on cron works ok without problems, and system defaults crons too except logwatch. I have tried to run it manually without luck. How can I debug logwatch or how can I fix this? Dump problem on USB drive

Hi. I am running CentOS 4.3 on a small home server just dishing up mail, music etc. to the household. I had been doing irregular backups to a 160GB USB external drive /dev/sda1 mounted as /mnt/backup using tar. Then I read somewhere that dump was better so I tried that after clearing the drive (formatted as ext3). dump -0u -f /dev/sda1 /shared took a while to finish but gave no errors however ls showed no files and df -h showed /dev/sda1 to be 4.4T in size and 100% full. I've looked at the man pages but I must be missing something! Regards, John

bootloader installed at wrong place during install

Hi, I've just started testing CentOS 4.4 installs. When installing on two mirrored drives, the bootloader got installed into the first partition, instead of MBR. It was a kickstart install, and I used "bootloader --location=mbr" in the kickstart file (which is also a default). However, when looking into /root/anaconda-ks.cfg file, misteriously it was changed to "bootloader --location=partition" by Anaconda!? I've noticed this happening only when installing on two mirrored drives. If installing on a single drive, the boot loader ends up in MBR as it should. The partition config was relatively simple. Two partitions on each disk, mirrored. One for /boot, one for LVM (which than contained everything else). New X crappy for older stuff?

While burning in a new desktop Epox KT-880 workstation, I'm running on my old K6-III at 360MHz. Before new X updates (put everything in today, kernel, elfutils, ntpd - Selinux issues? - xorg, ...) with my PCI ATI 7000 (Radeon) on a 19" Samsung 950b @ 1024x768 (one of 5 different resolutions I commonly use), I could scroll smoothly at reasonable rates. With the new stuff I get severe flickering. As if the screen is "blanking", showing a little, "blanking", showing a little, ... It's really horrible. Anybody else got some old stuff that does(n't) have symptoms? I'll say bye to this update shortly I guess, security be damned. I'm the only user and IPCop protects me. TIA BTW: 4.4? Anything left for that? :-) -- Bill

Repost: System crash on loading gdm revisited

Hello - I never heard back on this and continue to experience this bug. Can someone help me to locate the patch for this so that I can be sure it's included in my source? It's not happening on every boot, but about every other or third. And just as described in the bug report (the boot works OK, but at the end rather than GDM starting nicely, I get a "fuzzy" screen and the system crashes requiring a power cycle) but I don't get the "kernel BUG" message in my logs. If I should submit this a but report to bugs.centos.org, please let me know.
