2.6.9.42 Kernel Panic

I just joined the mailing list after seeing this e-mail in the mailing list archives. Does anyone have any idea as to why this may be happening? I am having this exact problem on a Dell Poweredge 1855. Centos 4.4, grep breaking?

I'm seeing grep break when I grep large numbers of gzip files in /var/log. Posted bug on bugzilla. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=205534 Description of problem: grep errors with: --- *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (normal): *** Aborted. --- when doing recursive grep in /var/log, other places. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Linux 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp 0x86_64, Linux 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp i686 How reproducible: Consistently on i686 and x86_64 boxes Centos4.4. Recently upgraded from CentOS 4.3 to 4.4. I have large /var/log directories with plenty of gzipped logs. Steps to Reproduce: 1. cd /var/log 2. grep -ri "Check Spelling & Mumble" * 3. (or) grep -ri "Check Spelling & Mumble" *gz Actual results: Fails with: *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (normal): *** Aborted. Sometimes: *** glibc detected *** realloc(): invalid next size: 0x000.... *** Aborted. Expected results: No failure. Additional info: Grepping 7GB of compressed logs on one server, grepping 4GB logs on other server. x86_64 Server had 35M or 3G+cache ram free; i686 server had 374M ram free, 960M+cache.

DAR - Disk ARchive packaged for CentOS?

Hi folks, I was searching for a backup tool simple and easy to use from command line to backup on DVD certain disks, even the whole OS. I was using mondoarchive almost succesfully but recently found what i think i was needing, it's called DAR (http://dar.linux.free.fr/) - i think im not the first that uses it - anyway, after searching for it already packaged for CentOS/RHEL/Fedora, i didn't find it. It's already packaged for debian, madrake, openSuSe, etc.. but i think there's not a pkg for RHEL systems. If somebody knows where i can find it i would appreciate it, or even if it's possible to include it in CentosPlus repo, TIA Jose.

yum: could not load sqlite, falling back to pickle

After cleaning up the issues with yum consuming the machine by allocating memory until it croaked (versioning issue with sqlite), and with the machine now stable and fully updated, I happened to notice this message at the start of yum runs: # yum check-update Warning, could not load sqlite, falling back to pickle Is this expected, or indication of a further problem? -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel Senie dts(a)senie.com Amaranth Networks Inc. http://www.amaranth.com "George Orwell was only off by 20 years. Sudo(ers) distrobution system/script

Just wondering if anyone out there is using sudo across a bunch of machines and has a system/script for painlessly distributing a master sudoers file? is it as easy as a daily cronjob running wget/scp/rsync?

Radeon 9000 breaks with CentOS 4.4

Dell Inspiron 600M w/ Radeon 9000 card. This worked with CentOS 4.3, also works with Knoppix 4.0.2. Graphical installation succeeds, but upon reboot, and all subsequent rebbots, graphical mode does not work, the screen becomes black. In addition to the 2.6.9-42 kernel, we have also tried the 2.6.9-42.0.2 kernel. Same problem exists on both kernel. Running system-config-display --reconfig exits with the error "fatal IO error 104" Connection reset by peer. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barry

OT: DVB-T TV on CentOS 4.4

Hi Folks, is a question special to centos-user in germany I think. I use centos on a desktop-system (yes, I know that centos is special for servers) and I watch TV with an anaolg card. The qualitiy is not so high. Now, I'm planning the use of an DVB-T Adapter. My question: There are any experience or knowing problems with these kind of adapters and centos? And which Adapter is recommendable? Thx Timothy

Kernel ELsmp vs EL

Hi all, I'm not very used to CentOS and Linux generally speaking, though I read a lot and 'man' quickly became a very good friend of mine, right after Google, so sorry if that's a ridiculous one! (at least it'll give you a good laugh!) I updated the kernel to 2.6.9-42.0.2 recently and that raised a question... Simple... Yet silly...! What exactly is the difference between 2.6.9-42.0.2EL and 2.6.9-42.0.2ELsmp? It seems the default install was the 'smp' kernel, but as I had to change the grub config I stumbled across this one and... started wondering... wifi (ipw2200) stoped working after upgrade to 4.4

Has anyone else had any problems with getting wifi to work after upgrade ? I am using ipw2200 on an HP laptop - was working under 4.3 Ian
