Installling network printer

Hi, I'm trying to install the Xerox docuprint 4517 driver in my centos box but I cannot see the driver in the drivers list when I try t add the printer. - I download the file Linuxi386XPXX_4.00.60.tar from the Xerox site which is the printer driver. - did untar the file in the install directory. - ran the setup file - reboot the server After doing this I still cannot see the driver.. Any ideas? Regards. --Ivan.

Installing CentOS 2.1 on ICH7R controller

I'm trying to install CentOS 2.1 on SATA drive that lives on ICH7R controller. I have the controller setup in BIOS to "compatibility" mode, which means it should look just like regular IDE controller to the OS. In this mode, ide0 and ide1 are PATA controllers, and 4 SATA ports are mapped to ide2 and ide3. If I boot from the 2.1 installation CD, all the drives are detected (CD-ROM as hda, and four SATA drives as hde, hdf, hdg, and hdh, just as expecte per above mappings). It detect IRQ for ide2/3 right away, and says it will probe for IRQ for ide0 later. Well, it hangs just after it probes and detects IRQ for ide0. I've tried all bunch of "standard" kernel options (turnning off DMA, disabling ACPI, and so forth), none of which helped. If I install the OS on some other box (with older SATA controller), update the kernel to 2.4.9-e.70, move the disk to the new box, the kernel boots just fine (however, the initrd image points to the wrong root device -- and I can't really boot into rescue to fix it, since kernel on install CD will hang). Hence I attempted to rebuild 2.1 install CD with 2.4.9-e.70 kernel (which I haven't managed to do yet). I also attempted to use CentOS 3.8 CD in rescue mode. However, regardless of my BIOS settings, it loads ata_piix drivers, and uses the controller in SATA mode, which isn't really what I want (mkinitrd trying to be too smart, but I have couple of tricks to try yet). I'm currently attempting to force it into PATA emulation mode by supplying "ide2=io1,io2,irq and ide3=io1,io2,irq" parameters, and it is going *very* slow and constantly complaining about lost interrupts. install on via 800mhz box 4.4

I tried install 4.4 on an old Via 800mhz box. i386 of course. The installer dies pretty quick. I thought the via was i386 compatible? Is there something special to do. Jerry

Re-doing the MBR

I tried to install CentOS 4.4. This was on a machine where I've got Windows XP on the first partition (hda1). CentOS, like most of the distros will automatically install Grub in the MBR unless you tell it not to. In fact it will wipe the MBR first pretty early in the install. Here was my problem. During the install, the second CD had some sort of read issue. So I had to abort the install by intervening with the power switch. So when I rebooted, I couldn't boot into my XP because the MBR had been wiped. I pulled out an Insert distribution and did a RAM only boot up. I could still see my NTFS partition where XP was located, and I could also see where the CentOS installed the /boot partition in /dev/hda2. Now I finally solved this problem by going back and doing a minimal install of CentOS which doesn't require the second CD. I've now got something in the MBR, and I'm up an running. But does anyone have suggestions on how to semi-manually install grub so that it sees what it calls the "other" partition to boot into? Is there a tool out there that will do that? I mean, what if the install had hung up on the first disk instead? === Al

rebuilding centos 2.1 isos

Hi, I'm attempting to rebuild CentOS 2.1 ISOs with the latest kernel (to attempt installation on some newer hardware with SATA drives). It seems that the original build environment used different version of anaconda than shipped with CentOS 2.1 (7.2-77_ELAS vs 7.2.32AS). I found SRPM of 7.2.32AS, however I'm wondering if there is binary package also? Install Using Floppy/CD

interactive bash v3 sessions and yank-last-arg

The readline function yank-last-arg (normally called through M-. or M-_) in bash3 work somewhat differently than in older bash versions for commented lines: For example, if I run in bash echo 1 2 3 #echo a b c then Esc-2 Esc-. produces alarm on first try and '2' on second try; So I can recall commented history lines using Esc-p, but not the arguments using Esc-. In older versions yank-last-arg worked on commented lines as well, which was very handy. Does anyone know, how to enable that 'old' behaviour in bash?

Trouble with X and vnc-4.0-8.1.i386 on Centos 4.4

I have recently migrated from an old, RedHat Linux 9 - based system (Aurox 9.2) to Centos 4.4. I am having trouble with vnc causing X unusable until reboot. By unusable I mean that X screen is either blank or blinking and moving, which is not cured by X restart until reboot. My system is: Compaq EVO D510 SFF CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz RAM: 256 MB Video: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) X: X Window System Version 6.8.2, using KDE in runlevel 3 kernel: Linux version 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL (buildsvn@build-i386) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)) Monitor: Dell E176FP (LCD, resolution 1280x1024) Mouse: Compaq/Logitech PS/2 mouse with wheel The X driver used is i810 How I get into trouble: I connect to an NT 4.0 Workstation box running 800x600 resolution with vnc; my resolution is 1280x1024 so the letters are too small for me and I switch resolution to 1024x768 or 800x600 using Ctrl-Alt-+; When I move mouse pointer so it leaves vnc window (sometimes through bottom vnc window border, sometimes through right border) then screen starts blinking with the image displayed multiple times and moving. Whether the image is moving and how fast depends on mouse position (X coordinate) on the screen (the mouse cursor is not visible, btw). If I move mouse vertically, lower part of the screen is is black. If I turn on screen saver (which is analog clock) it is displayed perfectly well on both resolution I tried ( 1280x1024 and 1024x768). but when I go back to KDE the screen is again unusable. If I switch to a text console, text mode is perfectly well, too. OSD display from the monitor is OK and stable all the time. If I exit X and then start it again, the screen is either blank while in X, or blinking. (if I exit X through Ctrl-Alt-Backspace it was blank; if I exit X using KDE menus, and the start it again, it is sometimes blank, sometimes blinking). After CentOS is rebooted all is fine. If I do not change X resolution from the default 1280x1024, vnc work fine all the time. I do not see anything special in var/log/messages. On VT I started X from, I have a message (1600x1200,Monitor0) mode clock 162MHz exceeds DDC maximum 140MHz each time I switch from text console to X (or perhaps the other way), same whether X is working correctly or not. I have never had that kind of problem with old RHL9-based distribution. Has anyone seen such behaviour? I would appreciate any advice. (I will send more info is needed, perhaps /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?) Lan Monitoring Software on Centos

hey friends, I am looking for a free Lan Monitoring Software/tool on Centos. My Network is hetrogenous consisting of Windows XP/2000/2003/98, Pix Firewall, APC UPS, Printers , Laptops. I want to monitor Desktops & Laptops and want a daily, weekly,monthly reports for each and every client with the details like Bandwidth spend on www, mail, chatting. Company wants to track how much bandwidth each client is consuming and on what. Is there any such tool available? I am using Centos 4.0 Thanks & Regards Ankush Grover
