running 2.6.19 on centos 4.4

Hi all, I had to take a machine and compile 2.6.19 on centos 4. I started with /boot/config-2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp. Everything works fine except on boot I get the following error for iptables: Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.2.11: iptables-restore: unable to initializetable 'filter' Error occurred at line: 3 Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information. [FAILED] Have I not included something in the kernel? Thanks, Jerry

Starting MySQL

When I run # mysql I get this error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) What do I need to do? The install of MySQL was done as part of the Centos setup. Todd

File Descriptors

I installed Squid on CentOS 4.4 and currently it seems to run fine even under the relatively heavy load of 6mbps and hundreds of users. I was told I should increase the file descriptor limit which I beleive is 1024 now. Any easy way to do that? Matt

Drive Failing

I got an email from smartd yesterday with the following error: SMART Health Status: SERVO IMPENDING FAILURE SEEK ERROR RATE TOO HIGH [asc=5d,ascq=43] I understand this means the drive is probably going to fail. This device is /dev/sda and is part of /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 Is it possible to replace the single failing drive and if so, what would be the steps so that data isn't lost. TIA for any guidance. Mike

ISA Support in CentOS 4.4?

Hi, I'm trying to get my ISA modem to work on CentOS 4.4, but I am having trouble. I have a stock installation of the CentOS 4.4, and did a yum upgrade to ensure everything is the latest, however, I can't seem to detect or see the ISA modem. I remember back in the 2.2 kernel days, the need for isapnptools, however, from what I read that is supposed to already be included in the 2.6 kernel. When I check the /proc directory, I don't see a /proc/isa or /proc/isapnp that I would have expected to find. I am relatively sure that the modem is a real modem (not a winmodem), but I don't understand why I can't even seem to locate it anywhere. I have manually set the jumpers on the modem to Com1, but that hasn't helped any either. Is the stock 2.6.9-42.EL kernel compiled with ISA support? Do i need to rebuild the kernel by hand? Is there anything I need to do to enable ISA support in CentOS4.4? If I do need to rebuild the kernel, what Thanks! Eric

Centos 4.4 perl modules. where are they?

I need to install VICIDIAL (cause is a free outbound call solution) and vicidial wants the following perl modules: MD5 Digest::MD5 Digest::SHA1 readline Bundle::CPAN DBI (found the rpm perl-DBI) DBD::mysql (found the RPM perl-DBD-Mysql) Net::Telnet Time::HiRes Net::Server OLE::Storage_Lite Spreadsheet::ParseExcel I do not want to taint the installation if an RPM is available on the DVD or in centos extras/plus. I haven't actually made any changes to the kernel yet - I need a working build, hopefully one that matches my current installation, but a working build to start. (Otherwise I won't know if the kernel I'm running and one I've modified contain anything I don't know about....) I used the config that the installed version had as my base, and I don't think I changed anything. I ran make menuconfig and set the version to something different, then ran make oldconfig to see what changes were needed (none), then built. In theory, if lvm support was in the installed kernel, it should have built into my new one, right? I'll be making a minor mod to xfs first, then there's a device driver we want to add (I think). I got a ton of "attempt to assign to nonexistent symbol" notices after exiting make menuconfig - I'm assuming that these are harmless. Build your kernel with lvm support. It sounds like you're changing far more than you need to in the config. If you follow the how-to on the centos wiki, you'd only be changing the things you need to, and all else will stay the same. This keeps you from running into things like you're experiencing. Has anyone gotten centos 4 to print on an officejet 7310? I have tried jetdirect with pcl and postcript no go... I have tried smb but it does seem to be browsable as its not listed and when I specify I enter the IP address for server and I dont know what the share is. Windows XP connects and prints fine. Hi, I want to install dcc on CentOS 4.4 as I am ruunig Dual-Sendmail with amavisd-new. I am looking for DCC RPM pkg. I searchrd bit I could not find any RPM pkg. Pls help me to find DCC RPM pkg. Have you installed DCC on CentOS 4.4. then Pls guide me. -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya
