I recovered the data from the NTFS partition this morning, so I am ready to "learn by destroying". The consensus of opinion from Ross and you is that I should bite the bullet and do it correctly. Wipe the HD and do fresh installs. Time consuming it will be (especially installing the Windows aps), but, I will have a better system and I will learn. For several months, I've wanted to install/use the free VMware Server, but I don't have space on the HD to do much with it now. One of the suggestions, from Alain, was to have WinXP running virtually, under CentOS. I am contemplating devoting about 75% of the HD capacity to CentOS. Installing a lean WinXP in English, and dual boot with CentOS, and then install VMware Server and install WinXP in English, in virtualization. The "KISS" technique (fdisk /mbr, run the anti root kit program, reinstall GRUB and restore grub.conf) is tempting and would probably work, and would be much faster, but I still wouldn't have the kind of system I will have with the more time consuming approach. All the ideas everyone who has responded to this thread have thrown into the basket for consideration are deeply appreciated! Lanny

Proftpd log errors - retrying please.

I am using proftpd with my first Centos 5 box. Although it appears to be working, I see the following errors in my logwatch reports. Deprecated pam_stack module called from service "proftpd" pam_unix(proftpd:session): session opened for user steve by (uid=0) Deprecated pam_stack module called from service "proftpd" Deprecated pam_stack module called from service "proftpd" pam_env(proftpd:setcred): Unable to open config file: /etc/security/pam_env.conf: No such file or directory The file /etc/security/pam_env.conf does exist, but is owned by root with 644 permissions. I may change those, but for now I would like to hear from anyone before I do. I have googled to no avail, although I find a lot of references to this - just no definitive answer. I'm running the rpms 1.3.1-5 that I picked up from Dag's site. I tried here before and saw no replies, so pardon me for attempting again or if I missed previous postings. Thanks for any assistance. openntp, mod_deflate, and mod_security CentOS5 rpms?

Hello, Has anyone made any of the above in to CentOS5 rpms? I've googled and not found any CentOS5 rpms and was wondering before i atempt to make them, was wondering if anyone else had any of them? Thanks. Dave.

I should have asked how big your setup was currently. Oh well, yes the Windows apps take a while to install, been there myself. If I were to re-do the whole drive, not knowing it's size I might do it as such: /dev/sda - standard 100MB boot /dev/sdb - 90% of remaining space as an LVM PV /dev/sdc - remaining space as future Windows volume In the LVM VG formed from /dev/sdb, create a / lv of say 8GB, a swap lv of say 2GB and a /home lv of say 16GB, save whatever is left for additional storage, maybe for shared files (/shared) or commercial apps (/opt) or whatever. The sizes are simply suggestions, but try to not allocate all free space. You can then install Windows from within vmware by making /dev/sdc a raw disk for vmware. Once it's installed you could add an entry in grub to boot into it. If you just want to access it from vmware you could forgo /dev/sdc and just create another lv for windows, but if you want to play directX games I think you will be out of luck. To use Xen hardware virtualization you will need a recent processor that supports it, there is a flag in cpuinfo that can tell you if it does I forget which one it is. wall and mesg and Xwindow

I read in another post this morning something that reminded me of a question that has left my pulling my eyebrows out. How are broadcast messages enabled in X? I have found that # mesg y at a console will enable wall to post to that console. And, by placing "mesg y" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, messages will be enabled on all consoles. But they're not enabled in KDE, neither in a pop-up nor in a terminal. So far, I've been unable to find what changed between CentOS 4 and CentOS 5 (and equivalent upstream versions, obviously). Would someone share a clue?

ntp queries not being answered

Hello All, My name is Gaurav, and I am tasked with configuring a linux box with NTP. I am having a problem that I hope you can help me with. We have installed CentOS V5 on 1 processor down in the lab. The rest of the processors on the network are AIX boxes versions 3.2.5 and 5.2. I worked through the entire initial NTP configuration; setup the /etc/ntp.conf file to point to the server, etc. Now when I run the ntpdate -d <address of server> on the linux box I get all the right information. Also, when I run the same command with the address for another non-linux box (AIX): ntpdate -d <address of non-linux box> I get all the right information again. The problem is that the linux box does not answer queries of the command to it. So if I enter the following on the non-linux box: Ntpdate -d <address of linux box>... all the values for offset, etc. are all zeroed out. So the linux box is not passing any information back to the querying processor, even though the command works the other way (executed on the linux box querying the non-linux box). Also, I don't see the usual "transmit....recieve" pattern for the command.... just the "transmit...transmit...". Are there any reasons that the box can query the server and other boxes successfully, but not answer queries sent to it? And in an effort to troubleshoot, I have commented out everything in the /etc/ntp.conf file except the server address to see if there was something in that file causing the problems, but that didn't work either. Do you have any information on this that could help me? Anything at all would be appreciated. -thanks.

Hi, i try to remastering CentOS. i try do step by step from http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?forum=34&topic_id=789&vie… why when i create ISO. i just get bootable disk. i cannot get rpm2 that i have installed. am i supposed to including manually rpm's what i want into ISO directory then make ISO or mkisofs repackage automatically? thx
