Xen and multiple block devices

Hello, CentOS 5.0 on x86_64 I'm trying to set up Xen paravirt guests with access to 2 block devices: One for / and one for swap. The block devices are LVM LVs, but that shouldn't matter. When I create the guest using either virt-manager or virt-install, I get asked which device to use for xvda. But I want more block devices: xvdb for swap. I know how to add this as an option to the config file in /etc/xen 'phy:/dev/vg1/guest1-swap,xvdb,w' But that file only appears AFTER running the installer. How do I make xvdb visible DURING the install of CentOS? Thanks, -- Francois Caen

I wouldn't necessarily wipe the whole HD, just the windows partition. You could also use Xen in CentOS 5 for your Windows virtualization. I'd wait for 5.1 though which will be more refined then version 5. I've been thinking of setting up a Xen machine of my own with a Windows HVM and a couple of Linux PVMs with their GUIs/consoles pinned to different virtual consoles. It has always been a dream to Alt-FX to the OS of my choice. I recovered the data from the NTFS partition this morning, so I am ready to "learn by destroying". The consensus of opinion from Ross and you is that I should bite the bullet and do it correctly. Wipe the HD and do fresh installs. Time consuming it will be (especially installing the Windows aps), but, I will have a better system and I will learn. For several months, I've wanted to install/use the free VMware Server, but I don't have space on the HD to do much with it now. One of the suggestions, from Alain, was to have WinXP running virtually, under CentOS. I am contemplating devoting about 75% of the HD capacity to CentOS. Installing a lean WinXP in English, and dual boot with CentOS, and then install VMware Server and install WinXP in English, in virtualization. The "KISS" technique (fdisk /mbr, run the anti root kit program, reinstall GRUB and restore grub.conf) is tempting and would probably work, and would be much faster, but I still wouldn't have the kind of system I will have with the more time consuming approach. All the ideas everyone who has responded to this thread have thrown into the basket for consideration are deeply appreciated! how can I use awk to match? pls help

Hi all I don't have idea how to write this script, please help I have thousand records in this format. eg: file No.3 is File No: 003 Customer: Ann Email address: xxx@info Country: England Created by: 20071102 file No. 4 is: File No: 004 Customer: James Email address: xxx@gov Country: Australia Created by: 20071105 I need to write a script to replace those Fields eg: (Customer/Email/Country.... when matching the FileNo.001...002...) to get Data in this file and also put the date in "Created by: 20071105" when I run this script File NO Customer Email Address Country -------------------------------------------------------- 001 John xxx@net USA 002 Peter xxx@com Canada 003 David xxx@org Mexico I know awk can do it. but don't know how to match the File No. in original file and the data file Thank you for your help ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better sports nut! Network Name issue

Hi, I've installed CentOS 5 on a Dell pe1950 with 2 dual port NICS. One of the NIC is an Intel and use the e1000 module. The problem is when the server is rebooted it does no asign the ethx name to the NICs, instead the so assign something like _dev377362... so i dont have networking on the server. Any ideas what is happening and how to solve it? Thanks.

Patricio, I had a very similar issue with a wireless Intel device coming up as _tmp29384792. I found that if I did a service network stop and removed the kernel module, loaded the kernel module and then service network start, everything went back to normal. I have not bothered to see why it loads this way, as its only every few boots on my personal laptop. If I remember correctly people noted the hardware timeout before it completed loading, but this is just a guess as to what it was as I never confirmed any comments people had made. This isn’t a solution obviously to the issue, but does give you some steps to see if the devices can be reloaded and work or not. Samba Upgrade on Centos 3

After today's samba update, Centos 3 boxes can not use samba to communicate with each other, although Windows and the Centos 3 boxes see each other correctly as do RHEL5 and the Centos3 boxes. The du command works well, but ls, cp, cat ,etc produces the error: PANIC: push_ascii - dest_len == -1 in the server log and smb_trans2_request: result=-5, setting invalid in the client. A similar (but more serious) set of problems was reported in Ubuntu early this morning after their update. Is any one else experiencing this problem with samba and Centos 3 after the update? regards, benm

Generating CMDB - Recommendations

Hi We use Remedy as our tool to help us with ITIL but we have a LOT of boxes ~4000 and that is growing all the time. I am looking at ways for us to be able to update the CMDB within remedy with little effort from us. I can get our DC team to pretty much touch a file on the OS with the box location but does any one have any 'neat' tricks that can take various pieces of info and then spit them out into say a csv that we could then use to import into Remedy? I know this is a vague request but i wonder how others with a few boxes handle their CMDB's ? thanks

Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: Impossible to restore WinXP?

We rarely use M$ Windows, but I let my daughter surf pbskids.org while using Windows and a Trojan Horse modified or deleted the user32.dll file. I found the instructions on the Microsoft Support web site, and it would be very easy for me to expand a new copy of user32.dll if I could get the MS WinXP CD to work. It boots OK, I press a key so it will search hardware and it then has hard drive activity for a long, long time. My impression is that Microsoft does not want this to work on dual boot boxes. I've tried this on dual boot boxes with Windows ME and Windows 98 SE and it works fine. Dell sent me two (2) new WinXP CDs (one in English and one in Spanish) but the problem apparently is not that I have a defective WinXP CD from Dell.
