mdadm syntax

Hi All, I am trying to create an MD device. I am using the command: /sbin/mdadm --create --a /dev/md12 --level=1 --run --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda12 /dev/sdb12 to create the device, and to dynamically create the device file if needed. What I want is the device file to be created as /dev/md12, but with the -a flag it creates it as /dev/md<first unwsed minor number>. I have tried various options to the -a or --auto, but cannot seem to find the correct syntax. From the man page it says: -a, --auto{=no,yes,md,mdp,part,p}{NN} Instruct mdadm to create the device file if needed, and to allocate an unused minor number. "yes" or "md" causes a non-partitionable array to be used. "mdp", "part" or "p" causes a partitionable array (2.6 and later) to be used. The argumentment can also come immediately after "-a". e.g. "-ap". Am I doing something wrong, or is there no way to get mdadm to automatically create a specific device file. Thanks...

Hi, im trying to create a trimmed down version of centos. just the base installation no services or anything, if i can trim it down to kernel bash and yum only working that would be great. What programs and dependencies i need for this kind of installation? thanks!

Hi i installed centos 5 and im having problem with starting X. but when i kill xorg process the GUI just pops up working properly, anyone experience this before?

Question about centosplus kernel and jfs...

Hello I run the latest kernel from centosplus and use a JFS partition. Even though the jfs tools are installed, when the server crashes, it doesn't run fsck.jfs automatically when at boot time it detects that the partition is corrupted I have to run fsck.jfs manually and mount the drive. Is there a way to make fsck.jfs run automatically if required ? (I recently moved from Fedora to CentOS, so pardon my ignorance here) Thank you Jean-Yves

Actually it works using your directive. So it must be proxy instead of http_proxy. Questions about kernel updates

The latest CentOS 5 kernel, 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5 broke my box and I had to drop back to 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 before I could play DVDs with either Xine or mplayer. ( xine-0.99.5-1.el5.rf & mplayer-1.0-0.36.rc1try2.el5.rf ). This is no big deal to me -- as long as I can make certain that the older kernel doesn't go away. If I understand the installonly plugin correctly, an entry of tokeep=4 in /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/installonlyn.conf will cause yum to leave the working kernel in place through 2 more upgrades. Aside from setting tokeep to an insanely large value, is there any way to insure that yum will concern itself only with installing updates, allowing me to deal with tossing the old stuff? Also, is my understanding of the "tokeep" value in installonlyn.conf correct? Thanks! --

The clonezilla live project is a really nice way to do image-copies of machines: http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/clonezilla-live/ but it's based on a Debian live OS which has some unfamiliar quirks. Has anyone built something like this on a Centos base? For anyone who hasn't seen it, it can do whole disk or partition copies of windows and most Linux filesystems and it knows enough to only copy the used parts of the disk. Among other tricks, it can also build a bootable iso image containing itself and one or more images that you can load directly from the cd/dvd. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

tftp-server

Hello, I have just installed Centos 5 and I have some problem with tftp-server. I use the same configuration like with Centos 4.4. With Centos 4.4 everything works properly. With Centos 5 DHCP server sends IP address to the client and client is booting. I can see: TFTP prefix: /lts/2.6.20.9-ltsp-1/ Trying to load: pxelinux.cfg/01-00-0c-29-62-e2-ed Trying to load: pxelinux.cfg/C0A8001D (several trials of loading and at the end I receive: # boot: When I switch dhcp and tftp servers to Centos 4.4 (using the same config files) everything comes back to the order. What can I do with Centos 5 to fix this problem? Best regards Radek Bursztynowski

program calls system() gettind PID - slightly off topic

I have a C program on centos. When I call system("some_program &"); how do I get the PID of the some_program? I cant just list processes as there might be more than one some_program active. I need to know the one that I just started. Thanks, Jerry
