yum freezing when removing old kernel

Hello, Today i ran a yum update and installed kernel 2.6.18.53.1 from centosplus. I then rebooted to ensure i was running it. I was and went to remove the previous kernel and kernel-devel packages v2.6.18.53 also from centosplus. In both cases yum gets to the running transaction check then hangs, i don't get any errors it just sits there. I have to manually kill the yum process to resolve this. This does not happen with any other package add/removals. Any suggestions? Thanks. Dave.

Kickstart + CentOS 5 = doesn't prompt for network information?

This may be more appropriate for an upstream list. That said... I'm doing kickstart setups of CentOS 5. My kickstart config includes a network configuration item. Depending on options passed at boot-time, the network config item may or may not include a --hostname option, but always specifies eth0. When I do a kickstart install, I notice that even though I am using 'interactive' (basically so the user can override any of the kickstart settings should they need to), the networking screen never pops up and the values from my network get used. If the usr didn't provide a hostname entry on bootup, then localhost.localdomain gets used as the system hostname. I'd like for the user to be able to select the hostname via the installation wizard as they would normally in a non-kickstart install. Perhaps for CentOS 5 kickstarts I should just not include the network option at all in order to make the network configuration screen accessible inside the installer? Ray

ntpd

I am running a server inside of VMWare, and the clock gains ~30 seconds every 1000 seconds or 1.03X. centos 5.1 install on thumbdrive

Is there anything new on installing centos 5.1 on a 4G thumbdrive? What about the number of writes to the flash? Is that still a problem? Jerry

CentOS 5.1 local repo HOW??????

I have a local repo of CentOS 5.0, base and updates, I can't use rsync , so I do it manually, I mean I got the packeages from /var/cache/yum and copied to where the repo is and do createrepo, meanwhile I only have CentOS 5.0 everything was fine, but now I don't know how to create de 5.1 and keep the 5.0 I need some help thanks to all manny -- "Nuestra recompensa se encuentra en el esfuerzo y no en el resultado. Problem with driver disk on amd64

Hi, I have a really strange problem with a driver disk (http://wiki.centos.org/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b) on amd64. I'm remotly booting the system via isolinux-files, so I unfortunatly do not have access to relevant logs, all I can see the the primary console/screen. With i386, the driver disk works just fine and I can install via http. But with amd64, the installer complains no driver for the hardware could be found, which again keeps me from installing the system. Due to the lack of RTL8111 hardware, I cannot debug this locally either. Does anybody have an idea what might be wrong? Thanks. -- Fridtjof Busse

How to disable hal's polling of CD-ROM drive in CentOS 5.1?

Given that I hardly ever use the CD-ROM drive, it makes no sense to have hal constantly polling it for new media. How can I disable this polling in CentOS 5.1? Thanks.

module mppe with pptpd causes kernel crash

Hi, configuration of PPTP for windows clients , using MPPE causes kernel crash. It is a known bug which is in bugzilla on RedHat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=248716 I was thinking that CentOS 5.1 has allready a kernel patched , but as it seems NOT. Or am i wrong? Thanks David Hlacik

5.0--> 5.1 lm_sensors "General Parse Error"

Problem and solution, not sure if correct After upgrading to 5.1 and restarting, lm_sensors complained "General Parse Error." Google pointed here: http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices Where I found this under "SENSOR CHIP DRIVERS - STATUS" AMD --> "Since Kernel 2.6.19" Latest AMD K8 processors have integrated sensors which can be read directly without any additional monitoring chip. Driver contributed by Rudolf Marek. Userspace support available in lm_sensors 2.10.1. Upgrade to lm_sensors 2.10.1 is mandatory, earlier versions of libsensors will fail with a "General parse error" message. My kernel is "2.6.18-53.el5.centos.plus-i686", but I figured I must of gotten me some backported stuff in there (i.e. I'm in over my head). I upgraded to the lm_sensors in ATRPMS testing repo, and the problem went away. (lm_sensors-2.10.5-52.el5) -- Sincerely, John Thomas

Problems configuring SAMBA share on remote machine

I'm having problems getting a SAMBA share on a remote (Windows XP) machine to allow me write access to files. I can copy/paste whole files OK from my CentOS 5 box, but can't do any editing of files on the Windows XP machine, which I use as a file server for most of my domestic data (historical reasons for using Windows!). I've tried re-setting permissions to allow write access to the cifs-mounted folders/files, but without success - any suggestions please? Thanks, Andy
