USB flash drive stopped working properly....

This past Tuesday (2/22/07) my flash drive started acting really strange - it only worked intermittently and would disappear right after an access or two. Yesterday it stopped working altogether - I couldn't even access it through my WinXP-on-VMWare. I rebooted my machine, and it worked fine after that. Is there some time limit on how long a USB flash drive will work in CentOS or is this a bug or ? ? ? I'm running a Dell Precision 390 with a Pentium-4 HT 3GHz, 2Gb mem, 1 SATA 150Gb (?) drive, multiple USB ports (including KB&mouse), etc., using CentOS 4.4 with the 2.6.9-42.0.8 kernel. The flash drive is a 2Gb SanDisk Titanium Cruzer-mini. Thanks.

Jumping from FC2

Some time ago I installed FC2 at the request of an employer. That contract ended over a year ago, and FC2 is an orphan. I am gradually feeling more pressure to jump from FC2, and do not wish to remain with the Fedora Core Project, as I don't want to make installing and upgrading my machine into a hobby. I already maintain a Debian machine for my girlfriend, but I'm not sure I wish make that big a jump, so I am considering what, if any, of the CentOS distros may be most like what I am now running. It appears that CentOS 4.x may be the closest, based on the website. I am interested in maintaining a very similar user interface to what I am now accustomed to (Gnome), and wish to have little, if any, modifications to, for example, /mnt (may be /media now, I guess) /etc and similar for my network settings. I am not running LVM, and do not wish to. I am not running a wireless network, and do not wish to. I am not running a web server, nor do I wish to. I am running kernel 2.6.10, and I see that CentOS 4.x is 2.6.9, which I suppose is pretty close. I do not run SELinux, nor do I wish to. I currently use XP boot manager (I dual boot and have one of those machines which tries to "repair" itself if it sees modifications to the MBR) to load GRUB which then can boot various versions of FC2. What, if any, other concerns need enter into my decision? Recommendations for gotchas? Should I just download the disc sets and install on a test machine and see which I feel more comfortable with? Latest Plus Kernel include MD RAID-1 BIO_RW_SYNC patch?

I am inquiring on the list if anybody knows if the latest plus kernel includes the fixes for MD RAID-1 where it didn't pass down the BIO_RW_SYNC flag on cloned bios. This bug was discovered in December by the DRBD project and patches were posted by Lars Ellenberg from that project to the LKM which were then merged into the 2.6.19 kernel. The bug causes severe performance penalties for applications that use the BIO_RW_SYNC flag on block requests. The fix is a simple 2 to 4 line change where it ORs the sync flag on the cloned bios. If it isn't in the plus kernel, how would one go about putting a request to have it included? Thanks, Ross S. W. I tried the ps2pdf and pdf2epsi route and fared no better. I clearly do not have a good grasp of what I need so I will give some more background. I recently installed the avantfax web client for hylafax. I have this working on an SELinux enabled server (despite claims on the project's website to the contrary) over https. I want to customize the cover sheet called cover.ps. According to the project instructions one may accomplish this in the following manner: ---> How-to Make A Custom Cover Page The included cover page file, cover.ps, was created with the XXXX- values and then exported to an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file with the fonts included. Also, the EPS file has been converted to UNIX format. I replaced all of the ^M characters with \n using this command: $ perl -p -i.old -e 's/\015/\n/g' cover.eps $ rm -f cover.eps.old $ mv cover.eps cover.ps Here are some example values of what the resulting PostScript file will look like. $ grep XXXX cover.ps 0 0 32 0 0 (To \/ Company: XXXX-to-company) ts 0 0 32 0 0 (Fax number: XXXX-to-fax-number) ts 0 0 32 0 0 (Date: XXXX-todays-date) ts 0 0 32 0 0 (From: XXXX-from) ts The beginning and ending of the line does not matter. The faxcover program will search and replace the "XXXX-" values. When you're done, you must replace the cover.ps file located in the images directory of your AvantFAX installation. <--- Now. I have a standard fax cover sheet in OOo .otd format that I have altered to contain the fields XXXX-to-company, XXXX-from-fax-number, etc. I want to turn this into an encapsulated .ps format as required above. What I am getting however is not TEXT but apparently pre-imaged printer pages. How to I get an .eps file that preserves the XXXX-fields as text in the .eps file so that the avantfax send generator can do the substitutions? -- James B. Centos package to export to eps format

Is there a package available in the CentOS repos that will convert either a MicroSoft Word .doc, an OOo .otd, or an Acrobat .pdf file into eps format? If so, what is its name? If not, What not CentOS packages are available (if any) and recommended to accomplish this? Regards -- James B. iSCSI, windows, & local linux access

Hello all, I am looking to build a larger array (6TB) using CentOS 4.4 to archive data to. We want to have the Windows server mount this array as a local drive so we were looking at iSCSI to do it. I have played with it in the past and gotten it to work in this combo, but I have a question about access to the data on the local (Centos) machine. If I understand correctly, when I mount the device on windows, I need to format the array in a format that Windows (2003 server) can understand. Also, iSCSI only allows you to mount the array on one server at a time. Once I do that and write files to this array, is there anyway to access those files from the local machine (Centos)? I may want to do things like rsync to another location, copy files to another removable SATA disk, or just plain delete something. Is it a choice of the OS so both windows and linux can read it? Little help with which one then. I know NTFS is still somewhat in its infancy. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Andrew
