antivirus sniffer/scanner for networks

Is anyone aware of a package that can detect viri on the network & possibly alert when there are? Here is the scenario: Our network is utilized by guest users all the time, sometimes into the thousands. We see guests from all over with a variety of OSs & hardware, all of which, we have no control or say in that matter. I am looking for something that I can run in promiscuous mode and/or on a span port that will sniff for viri and then alert/log when it sees a virus. We can then track down the culprits' ip/mac and shut off the switch port he/she is connected to and then visit with the guest to help them clean their machine. Given the nature of our network and our guests' needs, an inline solution is not an option. Although, I recall that squid supports WCCP, I'm not sure that it would do what I am requesting. I also looked at snort+libclamav, but the info was inconclusive. We are a CentOs shop and I have a spare dual xeon box that I can use for the task. Thanks, Eric

hard disk move to another server

Hello everyone. I am looking for a way to move a CentOS 4 installed production hard disk to another system (which has another hardware). The first has an nvidia sata controller (sata_nv), but the second has a via sata (sata_via). For all the rest of the hardware it can upgrade well I know, but if the sata driver is different, then the system doesn't boot because the proper driver is not included in the initrd file (grub still boots OK). Here is the error message: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.8 starting mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Does anyone know how I could upgrade easily this initrd file to contain the proper driver, and even from another partition? Would it be possible to keep an old config-xx file and do an rpm upgrade which would automatically recompile a proper initrd-xx file for that new system? Thanks for any help. Daniel

acpi=no command?

Hi I am trying to install CentOS 4.4 on an hp pavilion PC. It wont install just boots in a circle, so I think I have to pass acpi=no at boot stage. Can anyone give me a detailed explanation how do this? Thanks, -- Filianx

Connecting to a Novell Server

I am trying to connect our centos 4.4 machines to our Novell Netware 5 servers. The goal is to allow the centos 4.4 clients to connect to the server and access shared folders. We are not looking for a single sign-on style solution just the ability to connect. I have tried searching google but I did not find anything really usefull as most of the hits pointed toward SUSE and in our case we have need to stick with a RHEL style distro. If anyone has done this type of setup I would appreciate any information you have. Thank you, Rob

VIA C3 Nehemiah Locks Up

Hello, I've got an EPIA-M series motherboard in a system that has locked up twice under random conditions. Nothing is logged to the console or logs, the system just hangs. The system is installed with CentOS 4.4 and running the 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL i686 kernel. I am aware that older C3 processors had the CMOV problem, but that is resolved in the later boards (procinfo below). I've seen a few posts about similar problems, but it's not clear whether this is a bad board, or if there's an issue with the kernel. cpuspeed was running, I've since disabled and stopped the service as it's been rumored to cause problems. This was mentioned in this bug report that is still open : http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1270 Can anyone confirm that there are no known problems with the VIA C3 Nehemiah Model 9 and CentOS, or if some (kernel) tweaks are required to make these systems stable? RHWAS rebuild efforts

There is a new Web Application Stack that I would like to get the RPMS for into CentOS Plus. I am trying to get the upstream provider to the provide these SRPMS to their public FTP server, but so far they are not there: https://www.redhat.com/archives/nahant-list/2006-October/msg00053.html These RPMS would be a major add to CentOSPlus .... as they would provide an enterprise web stack with update support. I am just not sure if or when the source is going to be released. So, that being said, I am looking for a way that the CentOS team can have access to those SRPMS to build this for the CentOS community. The way would be to have someone donate a RHWAS license to the CentOS Project. The CentOS Project does not charge for our product and our only revenue stream is donations. If someone donated a license to the project, we could access the files and build RPMS for all the files that are redistributable. If the SRPMS are later added to the public FTP server, the license would not need to be renewed. php5 rpm to be installed in parallel with php4?

Hi, I'm looking for a php5 rpm which I can install in parallel with php4. Therefore, the centosplus rpm is (AFAIK) not usable for me as it replaces php4. Does centos provide an php5 rpm which does not touch my php4? Is there a matching srpm on web? Sorry, if this question is a FAQ. Thanks for your help :) fs

DHCP Messages

Hi, Im getting this messages in the /var/log/messages about my dhcp server. I assume there is nothing to worry about, but just in case I have to ask. Are these messages fine? Kickstart with all the latest updates?

Currently, I kickstart my machines over http to install CentOS 4.4 and then in a script called from %post do a "yum -y update" to install all the latest updates. Is there a way to set up the kickstart server so that I can do this all in one step? In other words, is there a "supported" way to roll in all the updates into the kickstart server? In case it matters, I set up the kickstart server by copying the contents of all CentOS 4.4 CDs (well, from the ISO images actually) into one directory, and then configuring the kickstart file to point to that URL (via http).
