My apologies for this because it is, technically, OT, but it is a classic example of what rotten support Linux (and CentOS) get in the US from equipment manufacturers. The whole email is a lie because they DO have the drivers on their asia site, they just don't want us 'Murkins to get our hands on them. Or maybe it's part of some clever little nuance of their agreement with Micro$oft not to provide the Linux drivers so they can have the rights to distribute the Window$ drivers with the printers. CentOS 5 - Issues with multimedia

Hi, I am having some issues with CentOS 5. -XMMS stops playing MP3s without apparent reason. I leave it playing some album and it will just stop whenever it feels like it. It will go into "pause" and just stay there. Pressing on the pause button to resume does nothing at all. I thought it could be some newly encoded songs, but it does the same for a song that I have played 100% times. -K3B takes 1:40 to create a DVD. Initially I thought it could be because I was writing a DVD with 2GB files on and UDF extensions, but creating the image first and then burning that takes exactly as long. I am running a clean install of CentOS 5 i386 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Core Due, 1GB RAM) with SELinux on "enforcing". None of these issues happen on the same machine running kubuntu 6.10. Strange behavior in X, esp. VMWare Windows

Last Thursday, for some reason (possibly a power failure), my work desktop had a different video configuration than when I left Wednesday evening. I have two 17" flat panels configured as a two-head wide (side-by-side) single display. When I arrived on Thu, I had two individual desktops instead, the resolution was down to 800x600, and so on. The monitor type had been reset to generic 800x600, and the vido card was unknown. (This was not true before.) After a lot of fooling around with the xorg.conf file, I finally got it back to where it should be, for the most part. My current xorg.conf is included below. The problem is that I typically run certain apps on the right screen, including seamonkey and Windows under VMWare workstation, and since the new configuration came in, the mouse cursor is not where it should be. Items light up when I run the mouse over them, but a little below and to the right of the tip of the pointer. It is only a slight dislocation, but significantly worse in the Windows on VMWare, and it is really annoying when I have to mis-aim the cursor to hit certain selections (check boxes, bullets, etc.). Can anyone explain this? Hi I just joined I have a serer who's purpose life is to be a fileserver/print server right now it is running windows 98 because it is an older computer look at an alternate os such as this will this allow windows based machines to talk to it save files retrieve files and also how difficult is it to install.

Making rpm from tar.gz

OS: CentOS 5 x86. I have read in some places that we can make an rpm package from tar.gz, by issuing rpmbuild -ta. However it doesn't seem to work. Any hints?

This is an independent work, so please don't bother CentOS lists with bugs related to the installer only. Summary of changes: * i686 and x86_64 install from a single dvd (automatic detection on boot) * updates as of 2007-04-26 * no kdelibs-api-docs, openoffice.org, tetex-doc and most *-javadoc sha1sum: 63885249695c60a87443e304212d6cf9af678165 centos5_32and64.iso md5sum: 0db291c3e4f7dc4fb4e6ea052b77e95d centos5_32and64.iso torrent: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/c5_32+64.torrent iso: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/centos5_32and64.iso Detailed changes: * All rpms are the originals from CentOS 5. FreeNX authenticates but no desktop on centos 5 ??

Hi all, I am new to CentOS and freeNX -- both look really awesome, a huge thanks to all the people making them happen. I am having a problem with freenx that appears to be specific to centos 5. my client authenticates but then no desktop comes up. however, when I connect to a similar machine running centos 4.4, I authenticate and the gnome desktop just pops up sweet as can be. I also have a vnc connection to my centos 5 workstation working, and can get a gnome desktop through vnc, and direct X11 connections are fine. the two nxserver machines have stable IP addresses, I have root access. the nxclient machine is a mac G4 PPC (which presumably makes no difference at all), with very recent download of the mac OS X client from nomachine. I followed the instructions for setting up freenx on centos 4.4 found here: http://linuxgazette.net/135/knaggs.html and it worked perfectly the first time I tried. the key steps were wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.… wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarc… sudo rpm -Uvh nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.rpm sudo rpm -Uvh freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarch.rpm plus a quick copy-paste of the client dsa key, and nxserver --adduser <me> For CentOS 5, I tried the yum-based instructions found at http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX (which says that freenx only works with centos 4, and the bottom of page says "FreeNX (last edited 2007-02-08 23:38:36 by JohnnyHughes )" -- hopefully its just the wiki is out of date) I also tried adapting the above steps to use the centos 5 packages from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/extras/i386/RPMS/ freenx-0.5.0-13.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 66K nx-2.1.0-6.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 2.9M either way, I get authenticated but no desktop comes up in the X11 window on the client machine. (just to be explicit: using exactly the same client I do get a desktop on the centos 4.4 machine). I saw a post today saying that freenx is supposed to work exactly the same on CentOS 5 as per instructions for 4. hmmm. Slow performance

Hi folks. I'm posting this to both the Fedora as well as the CentOS lists in hopes that somewhere, someone can help me figure out what's going on. I have a dual Xeon 3GHz server that's performing rather slow when it comes to disk activities. The machine is configured with a single 160 GiB OS drive (with CentOS 5.0) and 4x500 GiB drives setup in a RAID-5 configuration. All drives are setup for 3.0 GiB SATA link, and the motherboard also supports that. If I try to delete the folder afterwards (rm -rf FOLDER) it takes a few seconds to do so, however if I delete the CONTENTS of the folder, it does so within a fraction of a second (but then 'sync' takes a few seconds to catch up.) That same folder that I'm copying contains 452 jpeg files in it, ranging from 2.5 to 6.2 MiB. Doing some image processing on them is where it takes a long time. At the moment I'm doing a simple thumbnail creation with the ImageMagick suite (convert FILE -thumbnail "200x200>' `basename FILE .jpg`.th.jpg) and it takes upwards of 8 minutes to complete. The whole time it's running, 'top' reports the server load as follows: load average: 1.06, 1.00, 0.81 And the CPU usage is around 9%. Interestingly, if I run the same command and have it create .png instead, it takes longer, but I won't go there just yet. My question is, is this the expected performance on something like this, or should I be able to get better results? Is there something I should or could do to speed up disk based processes? Or is this something where it's more memory intensive and I need to look at adding more (right now it has 2 GiB of memory.) This problem is causing one of our web sites to time out because it's trying to process hundreds of image files and generate thumbnails, and it's taking forever to do that. So I'm starting at the bottom of the pile here, hardware. If it turns out the hardware is fine, and there's nothing else that can be done to speed it up, then I'll move forward to other possible culprits, such as the routines within the site scripts themselves... -- W | It's not a bug - it's an undocumented feature. +-------------------------------------------------------------------- Ashley M. setting up CentOS 5 with Raid10

I would like to set up CentOS on 4 SATA hard drives that I would like to configure in RAID10. I read somewhere that Raid10 support is in the latest kernel, but I can't seem to get anaconda to let me create it. I only see raid 0, 1, 5, and 6. Even when I tried to set up raid5 or raid1, it would not let me put the /boot partition on it, and I though that this was now possible. Is it possible for me to set up the configuration I'm looking for? Russ
