Disable window scaling during kickstart

Hello List, Due to a problem with CentOS 5 and one of our firewalls I am having to disable tcp window scaling to stop network connections grinding to a halt. I am also trying to Kickstart CentOS 5 machines through the firewall so need to disable window scaling at install time. I have added to the kickstart file %pre echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling But the install still hangs while transferring the stage2.img Should the above %pre work or do I need to do something else to disable window scaling during the install. In case anyone's interested CentOS 5 is the first time we have suffered this problem both CentOS 3&4 worked without issue. Thanks Dean

There is (was?) a bugzilla for bcm43xx problems. I was able to get it to work only as long as I turned off authentication at my WAP. I recently tried bcm43xx with CentOS5 and the system froze during boot. This was with an x86_64 kernel. I went back to ndiswrapper which seems to work. LVM Resizing Problem

I'm new to lvm. I decided to decrease the space of a logical volume. This probably means that the 2 "systems" aren't talking to each other (or my lvm command failed). When I rebooted, things failed, going into "repair filesystem" mode. I tried fsck /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol05 but after awhile, it started giving block errors, specifically "Error reading block <block-number> (Invalid argument) while doing inode scan. Ignore error<y>? I held down the <Enter> key for awhile in hopes that I'd be able to get through the errors, but no joy. I finally cancelled the thing. I can rebuild the server, it's no big deal. In fact the logical volume that went bad isn't a big deal data wise, and I shouldn't need that data to bring up the server itself. I shouldn't need to mount it. So can I still save this? === Al

CentOS 5.0: Xen vs OpenVZ

Hi all, I've just installed CentOS 5.0 on two brand new server, and it's time for me to migrate a few virtual machines from the old servers. The old servers are running CentOS 4.4 + OpenVZ; I'm quite happy with this setup: fast safe and simple (for my experience as of now :) ) Also is very easy to migrate one virtual machine to a server to another for maintenance/reboots. I've also managed to setup a nightly rsync for backups and it's very fast (two pass: first rsync with virtual machine up; shutdown virtual machine; second rsync; restart virtual machine... all in a matter of minutes for a complete backup even on the biggest virtual machine with 12G of used disk space) Now the dilemma: should I stay with OpenVZ or should I jump to Xen? What I don't like of OpenVZ is the non-stock kernel; instead I like the easiness of management. What I don't like of Xen is the slow restart and the disk management (either dedicated partition or image file) which can lead to slower backup and harder migration; instead I'm attracted by the standard and fully supported kernel. Does anyone have experience on Xen and have advice on which could be the best compromise between the two solutions? Of course with Xen I have to start all over on learning but... hey I'm a Linux fan, I like to learn! Many thanks and have a good day Lorenzo Quatrini

Suggestions for partition

The recent thread on Anaconda and RAID10 made me start to think about how to partition a server I'm about to set up. I have two 146GB SCSI drives on an IBM x3550. It will be used as a build system. As such, there is no critical data on these systems, as the source code will be checked out of our source control system, and the build results are copied to another system. I usually build my systems with Kickstart, so if a disk dies, I can rebuild it quickly. Given all that, how would you partition these disks? I keep going back and forth between various options (HW RAID, SW RAID, LVM, etc.). I guess speed is more important to me than redundancy. I'm tempted to install the OS on one drive and use the entire second drive for data. This way I can rebuild or upgrade the OS without touching the data. But that will waste a lot of disk space, as the OS does not need 146GB. The only thing I'm pretty sure of is to put 2GB of swap on each drive, but after that everything is still in the air. I am looking for any and all suggestions from the collective wisdom and experience of this list. Thanks, Alfred

yum upgrading

I have boxes on CentOS 4.2 that I want to move to CentOS5. Are there any problems envisaged in trying to move 4.2->4.3, 4.3->4.4 and 4.4->5.0, using yum upgrade and changing the repositories at each stage? I guess it is not too good an idea to try it in one step. Or do I need the CDs? Can anyone advise? Problems with Server and Mail server

Hi... I've have problem with my file and mail server. I have a Centos 4 with file and mail server for my office network, which is compose with Linux (xandros 4) and windows (2k) work stations. The problem is that suddenly some linux machines can't access the the remote files on the server, but they can see the server in the file manager, but there is no files. When I enter as root, there is no problem... I can access remote files and devices in the server or in other machines (shared folder, files or devices). Windows machines can access anywhere (server and others work stations, linux and windwos); some linux machine can access anywhere too, but other can't access the server but can access shared resources. I think it may be a access permition issue, but this happens from one day to another, and in at least 3 linux machines... so, where can i look for solution in my server? Other thing is the mail server (outgoing) doesn't work, when i try to send a mail through the mail server (the same file server machine), it search for the outgoing server (192.168.0.10) and can't establish connection. A linux user friend told me to shutdown the machine and disconect the power cord for a minute and then restart the system. It worked for a time, but then it start the same problem and can only be solved by shooting down the system, and that is a bad solution. The mail server use to work fine, 24/7. These 2 problems start when a electric crash burned out the router, and then when i replaced it the start to happen, but router configuration is fine and doesn't seem to have a problem. So I ran it with the --initial=dual-head option (only). Segmentation fault. 5) Saved the xorg.conf file and went in to edit it. It looked liked the below with a few fewer lines (no aticonfig[1] entries at all). I added all the aticonfig[1] entries where they are now, but the desktop horizontal option was not there. 6) Rebooted. 7) X came up with mirrored desktops again. I logged in as root and ran system-config-display (from the gnome menu). it said "Individual desktops" so I changed that to "Spanning desktops"). Saved that (no monitor or video card changes). Then I vi'ed into the xorg.conf file and noticed the first device had the desktop horizontal option turned on. Just in case, I added it to the first aticonfig[0] device, too. Saved a copy of that, just for good measure. Then I logged out. 8) New screen: left screen had the login box, all stretched out. Right screen - the blue background. I logged in as me and now I have spanning desktops (finally) again. Thanks to all, but mostly Jeff Stacey, who hung in there and kept sending me occasional hints. This time, it all fell into place.
