SATA on Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 MB

Hi Gang! I've got this (now old) Gigabyte motherboard (GA-7N400 Pro2), I've had it for just over 3 years. I use it, so far, with only PATA devices. I'm toying with the idea of buying a matched pair of SATA drives and when I install Centos 5 (hopefully soon), building it with software raid (using the two drives as mirrors of each other). Now, I wouldn't have ever even thought of this question, except I've been reading recently that most/many/some new motherboards, those few that still offer PATA, often cannot boot from PATA any more because the manufacturer has saved a couple of bucks by not putting a suitable PATA chip on the board. Now, given that this board is 3 years old (designed even longer ago than that), I'm wondering if the SATA support is complete? That is, can Centos 5 boot from SATA on such a board? or am I merely an old man who worries needlessly? YUM grabbing two architectures

Afternoon all, Is there any particular reason why yum fetches rpms for two architectures on almost any update/install I'd like to perform? This includes both i386 and x86_64. Here's a small excerpt after performing a 'yum update' cups-libs i386 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.9.18 update 107 k cups-libs x86_64 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.9.18 update 112 k I'm assuming I'll have to put in an explicit arch into /etc/yum.conf? - sf

CentOS cutom kernel compilation

Could any one let me know how can I compile & build CentOS kernel. In redhat Linux the kernel source ia available under /usr/src/linux But in CentOS i am getting two directories named as Kernels and redhat under /usr/src the directory /usr/src/redhat is having again four subdirectory without any contents name as BUILD, RPMS, SPECS, SRPM And /usr/src/kenrnels is having the the directory 2.6.9-42.EL-hugemem-i686, 2.6.9-42.EL-i686, 2.6.9-42.EL-smp-i686 I dig the directory source 2.6.9-42.EL-i686, when I am executing make command after make menuconfig, I am getting error as "include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h -- no such file or directory.. I am not sure wheather i am doing the right operation? Could any body suggest me any How to or step by step guide for CentOS kernel compilation Thanks in advance Brijesh Shukla

Moving a Centos 5 install to another disk

I want to get Centos 5 on my notebook, at minimal risk. I want to install it on a clean drive, make sure it 'works', the delete everything but /home (which is on a separate partition) from the Centos 4 drive and copy the Centos 5 over. Any 'caviats'? I would first tar up the Centos 4 stuff before putting my foot into it. To what extent do I need to have the same drive layouts? Is it enough that /boot and / are consistant (ie each is in its own partition). I am working with /home in a separate partition. Thanks for the help!

yum can't connect to mirrors

Hello, I added rpmforge yum repo to my yum config and then the box couldn't connect to fetch updates. I added enabled=0 to rpmforge.repo as well as add-ons, contrib, and centosplus, but i'm still getting mirror errors. I believe i've got some file corruption somewhere, but i don't see where. I can't even fetch packages in updates now, keep getting connection refused msgs. Thanks. Centos 5 and blutooth mouse

I have an hp dv9000 laptop with centos 5. everything is working except my bluetooth mouse... I go up to the icon (upper right) for bluetooth, right click on it, click the discoverable icon, then click the discoverable button on my mouse - ----- and nothing. Nothing pops up with a pin number for the mouse, nothing happens at all... Does this not work? What might I be missing. Jerry
