Raid5 issues

So when I couldn't get the raid10 to work, I decided to do raid5. Everything installed and looked good. I left it overnight to rebuild the array, and when I came in this morning, everything was frozen. Upon reboot, it said that 2 of the 4 devices for the raid5 array failed. Luckily, I didn't have any data on it, but how do I know that the same thing won't happen when I have real data on it? I kind of feel that the problem might be that I'm using SATA drives, and they probably tried to self-correct and error and took too long, and the raid controller assumed that it was a bad drive, and took it out of the array. The question is, is there anything I can do about it? Russ

Installing from a custom kernel

Since the built in kernel doesn't have the raid10 module for some reason, I would like to custom compile a kernel that does, and install with it. How would I go about doing this? Russ

wget not in minimal install

Hi All, I used to always do a minimal install with v4.4, and wget (and other tools) was included. With v5 if i untick *everything* in the installation (incl "base") so that i can install from 1 cd, wget is not included. I couldn't make sense of any of the xml or xml.gz files on the installation cd. (/dev/cdrom/repodata/*), although they do mention wget as 'default' rather than 'mandatory' in one of the files. Which option should i tick to get wget? or should i just use a kickstart install and throw yum -y install wget dos2unix in the postinstall section? MrKiwi,

CentOS 5: GDM starts, but console doesn't switch VTs

(2nd attempt, the mailing list is still bouncing some gmail SMTP servers because of the multihop DSBL.) Over the weekend I installed CentOS 5 on my hp pavilion ze5300. The graphical install went just fine, and everything (except wireless, haven't worked on that yet) seems to be working. However, on boot, the text console comes up. If I hit Alt-F7 manually, I'm switched to the graphical GDM login, and that logs me in to a Gnome session as usual -- but the console never automatically switches over to the GDM virtual terminal, as far as I can tell. Is anyone else experiencing this? It may be that this happens only with the Xen kernel and has something to do with rhgb itself switching into text mode because of the microcode module installation failure that has been discussed elsewhere.

Zimbra MTA and Contact package?

Does anyone have any feedback on the Zimbra MTA and Contact software? I just saw that Comcast is going to start using the software, I played with it over a year ago and dumped it. It seems to have been developed much further and works, open source and compiled for RedHat 4 Enterprise. Any feedback would be helpful... Thanks, john

runuser: /dev/null permission denied when init script is run via service

Hi, I have problem with runuser utility and permission to /dev/null. runuser is called from init script. When init script is run /etc/init.d/callrec start, then there are no problems with permissions, but when init script is called via service callrec start. Then runuser starts complaining about permissions. runuser: /dev/null: Permission denied What is strange is that I do not redirect to /dev/null anywhere. Permissions to /dev/null are: crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Apr 16 16:39 /dev/null The difference between calling init script from command line and from service tool is that service calls script as parameter of env env -i LANG=en_US.UTF-8 PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin TERM=xterm /etc/init.d/callrec start CentOS is 4.3. Can somebody explain me where the problem is? Regards, Karel Rank

adsl-setup (compaq presario sr5010nx)

I just bought a new cheap compaq presario sr5010nx and so far have been unable to get my dsl up and running on Centos5. pppoeconf on Ubuntu works just fine -- same machine -- same harddrive. I've run adsl-setup and system-config-network? (separately) numerous times without success. So far I suspect a missing driver but suppose it could also be a detection issue. Suggestions or workarounds appreciated. ----gary

OT: Quick ext3 command

Hello, Sorry for the off-topic, but I've just installed CentOS 5 on my home box and I want to put the journal on another drive. I created a software RAID-1 device, /dev/md1, and formatted an ext3 file system on it. Now I want to move the journal to /dev/hda5. I've googled for this and the process appears to be: mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -O journal_dev /dev/hda5 mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -J device=/dev/hda5 /dev/md1 Now, here's the fun part. I've already put data on /dev/md1. Will the above commands reformat /dev/md1? If so, is there an easy way to move the journal for /dev/md1 to a new partition? TIA! Jeff
