Trying to build custom Python 2.4.4 RPM

I'm trying to build a custom RPM with a standalone Python 2.4.4 in the /opt directory to keep it isolated from the stock version of Python in CentOS 4.4. The end goal is to use it in conjunction with yet-to-be-built RPMS of the current versions of Zope and Plone. The spec file I've constructed allows me to build a RPM successfully, but when I try to install the RPM, it complains: error: Failed dependencies: /usr/local/bin/python is needed by python24-2.4.4-0.i386 I'm not sure if this is more of a Python or RPM issue. So, I'm hoping someone on the list knows enough about both to help me out. Here is my spec file: %define optdir /opt/Python-2.4.4 Summary: An interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language. Laptop non-graphic install init 5 to X not Gnome

Well I got my 1st notebook install done. Since the video card takes 24Mb memory, installer would not go graphical (256-24=232). But I can now boot into character mode. an init 5 brings up X, but I am in the X environment, and I want to be in Gnome. What file am I to edit and what changes do I make? thanks.

kernel update and RAID controller

Hello, I have a problem with drivers. I believe it is a general topic for Linux administrator. I managed it to install Centos4 with driver disk for my RAID controller. Unfortunately after "yum update" my kernel is updated and I see some warnings about missing driver. After restart kernel is stopping with message "kernel panic". The server I am installing on is Intel S5000PAL http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/ and the drivers are version 07.15.0209.2007 on http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strT ypes=all&ProductID=2451&OSFullName=Red+Hat*+Enterprise+Linux+4.0&lang=eng&st rOSs=129&submit=Go%21 Could somebody give me some advices how to fix this ? ssh to failover target?

I have some machines that send ssh commands to a load balancer appliance that is really a pair of machines that can fail over to each other. The ssh keys are set up on both targets, but whenever the active target is changed, ssh issues a warning about a "man-in-the-middle" attack also goes to the log and the console which tends to alarm the operators. Setting the strict host check to no lets the command complete anyway, but is there a way to get rid of the warning completely? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Email client shortcut

Under SL 4.x GNOME, when I assigned a button shortcut for Email (the "Mail" button of my Microsoft Internet Keyboard), the default email client (thunderbird) was launched. Under CentOS 5.0, Thunderbird is launched as "thunderbird -compose %s" (defined in GNOME "Preferred applications"). This has as an effect when I press the email shortcut a compose new message window opens, and not the thunderbird main client. If I erase the "-compose %s" part, it has as a side effect that when I click on an email web link under firefox, it doesn't open the compose window but the thunderbird client. Any nice fix on this, other than choosing between the two? Thanks.

GNOME Evolution and digests

Is anyone using Evolution with MIME digests of this list successfully? I am using Thunderbird and is not working well with the MIME digests, clearly affected by the amount of the messages. Thanks.

NFS issue

Hi List, I must be going mad or something, but got a really odd problem with NFS mount and a DVD rom. Here is the situation, /dev/md7 58G 18G 37G 33% /data which is shared out by NFS, (/etc/exportfs) This has been working since I installed the OS, Centos 4.4 I have a DVD on that is device /dev/scd0, which I can mount anywhere I like, no problem. However, the problem comes when I try to mount it under /data/shared/Photos/Archive1. It mounts ok, and I can see the data on it form the server, but I cannot see this data over the network on any NFS client when mounting /data/shared. If I mount /devscd0 as /mnt and export that, I can mount the over the network fine. If I take another device, /dev/md4 and mount in same place, (/data/shared/Photos/Archive1) i cannot see those files over the network either. I do this kind of thing not quite everyday on Solaris and it just works.. I know I must be missing something, but i'll be b*gger** if I know what. No messages in any /var/log/* file. Any ideas would be most appreciated? Cheers AM

MPlayer doesn't seem to work right in CentOS 5

I could be mixed up here, but I have mplayer working perfectly at home in CentOS 4.4, but I just built it here at work for CentOS 5.0 and it doesn't produce any sound. My h/w: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) Dell Precision 390 Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz 2Gb RAM The sound from Adobe/Macromedia flash player works fine (in seamonkey) - should I be telling mplayer to build for i386 instead of x86_64?
