Sound problems with CentOS

Has anyone experienced this before? This happened to me even under CentOS 4.x. But basically what happens is that when I play MP3s, whatever the right speaker crackles at higher volume. And it's always that speaker and only that speaker. If I turn the balance to the other speaker I have no problems. So it feels like it might be a mixer issue. I use Alsa, of course, as that's what the default is. Is this a known issue or does someone know how to fix it? Preston

Sftp slow on both our centos installs

The short version. Copying over SFTP to our centos boxes maxes out at 2MB a sec. The Question: Is there some sort of speed limitation somewhere in the ssh/sftp daemon? Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening? The long version We have centos 4.6 installed on 2 different machines, different hardware, different nics. Even on 2 different subnets. I've tried different switches, 1000 Full/Half 100 Full/Half and still get the same speed. It maxes out at 2MB a sec. Same switch, network, client using sftp to our xserves gets 10MB a sec. Basically filling the pipe of the network. The only thing that is the same on both the linux boxes is the distro. So i thought maybe someone may have come across this before. I haven't tried other protocols yet (FTP and HTTP) I'll check that tomorrow. Thanks, Jamie

CentOS 5 and ndiswrapper

This is an abbreviated version of an e-mail that I also posted to the ndiswrapper mailing list. Compressing the long story, I ran into the same problem using CentOS 5 as I had with Fedora Core 6 and ndiswrapper: my laptop (HP Pavilion zv6000 series with a Broadcom BCM43xx wireless NIC) would lock up or spontaneously reboot after a few hours if I brought up the wireless interface. I also tried using the native bcm43xx driver but the system wouldn't even boot. On a whim, I tried the current "plain vanilla" kernel (2.6.21) from kernel.org. My laptop has been up and stable running the 2.6.21 kernel with the wireless NIC up using ndiswrapper ever since. Does anyone have any idea why the un-patched kernel from kernel.org works fine with ndiswrapper but both the FC6 and CentOS (RHEL) kernels lock up or spontaneously reboot? I built the 2.6.21 kernel by copying the config file for 2.6.18-8.1.1 from /boot and doing a "make oldconfig". Everything is x86_64. Cheers, Dave P.S. Identify motherboard from SSH login

Hi, I have CentOS 4.4 installed on a system at an ISP and I am trying to setup lm_sensors. It would be a lot easier to setup if I knew what motherboard I was using! :-) Is there any way of identifying the motherboard of a system remotely (via SSH)? Many thanks Regards, Dan

CentOS 5 - Issues with multimedia

Hi, I am having some issues with CentOS 5. -XMMS stops playing MP3s without apparent reason. I leave it playing some album and it will just stop whenever it feels like it. It will go into "pause" and just stay there. Pressing on the pause button to resume does nothing at all. I thought it could be some newly encoded songs, but it does the same for a song that I have played 100% times. -K3B takes 1:40 to create a DVD. Initially I thought it could be because I was writing a DVD with 2GB files on and UDF extensions, but creating the image first and then burning that takes exactly as long. I am running a clean install of CentOS 5 i386 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Core Due, 1GB RAM) with SELinux on "enforcing". None of these issues happen on the same machine running kubuntu 6.10. Hello. Does anyone know why # CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set in kernel config? I find very useful having a large text console on servers (exp. without X running!). Now my setting vga=0x345 in grub.conf does not work anymore... Thanks! --Clorden

Strange behavior in X, esp. VMWare Windows

Last Thursday, for some reason (possibly a power failure), my work desktop had a different video configuration than when I left Wednesday evening. I have two 17" flat panels configured as a two-head wide (side-by-side) single display. When I arrived on Thu, I had two individual desktops instead, the resolution was down to 800x600, and so on. The monitor type had been reset to generic 800x600, and the vido card was unknown. (This was not true before.) After a lot of fooling around with the xorg.conf file, I finally got it back to where it should be, for the most part. My current xorg.conf is included below. The problem is that I typically run certain apps on the right screen, including seamonkey and Windows under VMWare workstation, and since the new configuration came in, the mouse cursor is not where it should be. Items light up when I run the mouse over them, but a little below and to the right of the tip of the pointer. It is only a slight dislocation, but significantly worse in the Windows on VMWare, and it is really annoying when I have to mis-aim the cursor to hit certain selections (check boxes, bullets, etc.). Can anyone explain this? Hello all. Does anyone know how to get bluetooth working on CentOS 5? I can't pair any device. Things work perfectly on CentOS 4. Hi I just joined I have a serer who's purpose life is to be a fileserver/print server right now it is running windows 98 because it is an older computer look at an alternate os such as this will this allow windows based machines to talk to it save files retrieve files and also how difficult is it to install.
