I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that behavior was because of the simultaneous use of -Lf /dev/null switch. With CentOS 4.5 snmpd now does something with the -Lsd switch. Centos5, Compiz, and Nvidia

Hi! Just did a TEST install of centos5 on an old PIII box. one of the things I wanted to see was the fancy desktop eye-candy of compiz and/or beryl. This box has a nvidia 6600 series card, and I've isntalled the Nvidia drivers (download from nvidia and run their installer). I used the software updater to install compiz (didn't show up on original install, perhaps I didn't hold my tongue the right way. :) So, how do I run compiz? Found "enable desktop effects", click it, and it says "could not enable desktop effects". Not very informative. From a command line, just type "compiz" and it comes back with "no sync extension". Anyone know what else I need to do? question on zenity centos 5

I am trying to use zenity --progress. When I use this script: #!/bin/sh ( echo "10" ; sleep 1 echo "20" ; sleep 1 echo "50" ; sleep 1 echo "75" ; sleep 1 echo "100" ; sleep 1 ) | zenity --progress ~ It works fine... When I use a little program. for(count = 0; count <= 100; count += 10) { printf(stdout, "%d\n", count); sleep(1); } and run it as "myprog | zenity --progress" I dont get anything updating until the end and the program exits. Why does the second example not work. Both are just piping stdout into zenity. Both use carriage return. Thanks, Jerry

Error building kernel for CentOS 5.0

I thought I had all the tools I needed for this, but it seems something is missing. CentOS-5 - kmod-gfs dependency issue?

Hi all, I'm wondering if I'm running into some dependency issues on my CentOS5 test-machines. I've installed with a fairly minimal package set, updated, removed old kernels and am now experimenting with iscsi and gfs. I think I need kmod-gfs to get gfs -support, but there is only a version that suits the base-kernel, 2.6.18-8.el5. " [root@node02 ~]# yum install kmod-gfs (...) Installing: kmod-gfs i686 0.1.16-5.2.6.18_8.el5 base 133 k Installing for dependencies: kernel i686 2.6.18-8.el5 base 12 M " ...so I'm getting the /old/ kernel, to install kmod-gfs. " Transaction Check Error: package kernel-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 (which is newer than kernel-2.6.18-8.el5) is already installed " ...but not. On a different system (installed with clustering and storage-clustering package-groups), I got kmod-gfs installed; [root@dics073 ~]# rpm -ql kmod-gfs /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.el5/extra/gfs /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.el5/extra/gfs/gfs.ko [root@dics073 ~]# find /lib/modules/ | grep gfs.ko /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.1.4.el5/weak-updates/gfs/gfs.ko /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.el5/extra/gfs/gfs.ko ...so what happened here? This system is x86-64 while my problem-systems are i386, but that should not be an issue, I hope? I also found this; http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/dkms-devel/2007-February/000529.html ...which seems to explain the situation somewhat. ...but how should I fix my problem - where the RPM I want to install depends on an RPM that can't be installed? (well, I'll be able to jam it in, of course, but...) trying to run sshd daemon in kickstart environment

Hi, I tried to make kickstart environment a little bit more charming by firing up openssh daemon in the limited environment. I edited/checked a bunch of files and almost succeeded but still not. I can reach the machine to run a command like 'ssh -x <kickstartClient> <command>' and it does work for %pre and both chroot and non-chroot %post sections, in fact, you can run a command on kickstartClient through ssh connections without problems. But it still fails because I can not ssh into the kickstartClient to get a local command shell. In short, 'ssh -x <kickstartClient>' fails, 'ssh -x <kickstartClient> <command>' works. Any one has succeeded in this topic? Life will be much happier if we can freely turn on/off sshd daemon for Kickstart environment. Thanks. --Guolin

display pop up message on X

Is there a method to display pop up messages on X display? I found xmessage, however I was hoping for something a little more flexible. like being able to tell xmessage to display a file (typically one line in the file). then send it a signal to tell it to re-read the file and show the new data. Sure I can kill it and re-show it but that isnt very nice... Is there something available in centos 5 for this that I dont know about? Thanks Jerry

CentOS 4.5, kernel-2.6.9-55, NTPD trouble

Following the update this morning, NTP is failing with the same symptoms that I saw several years ago (pre-CentOS, I believe) when Anaconda mistakenly blessed my ASUS A7N8X, Athlon (CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ stepping 00) based system with an SMP kernel. The symptom is that NTPD never establishes sync with a server, showing over the top jitter values. Rebooting into the previous kernel restores the operation this machine has enjoyed for the last couple years, quickly settling on an external source. [OT] External RAID storage / NAS

Hello List, I need storage for my home network - lots of storage. It's going to hold pictures, home movies, music, other bits of data, etc. I'm looking to start at about 500 GB, but I'd need to eventually grow that to 1 TB, or more. I also want something that is quiet, has hot swappable drives (not necessary, but a plus), is fairly easy to manage, and can be directly attached to the network. Obviously, it has to work with Linux distros, and support NFS. I've done some research, and so far the ReadyNAS NV+ looks to be the best. Is there anything else similar to the ReaddyNAS NV+? I currently have an Arena Aiby v2 for my small business/home office, but it's LOUD, cannot be directly attached to the network, big, and uses PATA drives. It's also leased, so instead of buying it out at the end and moving it to personal use, I just want to let it go when the lease is up. All recommendations welcome. Why new "SCSI" devices in 4.5 kernel?

I've been running CentOS 4.4 on my Thinkpad 600E machine. Now the new 2.6.9-55 kernel wants to support the SCSI devices I don't have. After the 4.4 --> 4.5 update, on the reboot kudzu informed me that it had detected my PIIX4 controller. Well, OK. That same chipset has been in this machine for 10 years, but if the OS wants to re-detected it that's fine with me. Here, finally, is my question: why is my limited system RAM being wasted with device drivers I don't need? It occurs to me that maybe CentOS 4.5 wants to handle my CD-ROM as a SCSI device. Is that done with plain old CD readers? This Sanyo CRD-S372B is far to old to actually write CDs and would probably burst into flames if I put a DVD disk into it. So... any thoughts as to the sudden appearance of this SCSI support? Thanks.
