which commands do you use to SSL certify your own server?

Hello, I am going to build an email server on Centos for a small, private group of users and I just want to encrypt all communications between that server and the (remote) email clients of those users (or they browsers, when they use webmail). Client certificates are not necessary, at least now. I understand that to do that I need to create my own SSL CA, create with it a self signed certificate and key pair and make sure that the private key is not encrypted, so the server restarts unattended in case of a reboot. I have already looked at man pages and a few online tutorials, but frankly they are not clear on what to do to achieve all and _only_ what I wrote above. Most documentation, when not outdated, seems targeted at much more complex scenarions. Is this sequence of actions and commands correct and complete for my case, or not: 1) cd /usr/share/ssl 2) modify openssl.cnf to have your Common Name and other parameters 3) run: ./CA -newca ./CA -newreq-nodes 4) move the private key from the .pem file to a separate file 5) put the cert and key file in a location where Postfix, 6) Dovecot and Apache can all use them 7) configure each of those servers to use the certificate What have I missed? Thank you in advance for any feedback (I'll have access to the server only over the weekend, but it would be great to have this issue as clear as possible before starting...) Marco

CentOS5: Loss of Prompt & Cursor in Virtual Console Mode

When I log into a virtual console (e.g.,#4) as ordinary user, I initially have a prompt & cursor. I then do several ls -l /home/user-name and several lines of data. If the number of lines is less than it takes to fill the screen, I will retain the prompt & cursor. If the number of lines (resulting from that last command) fills the screen or more, the last visible line will be data instead of the prompt & cursor. The up arrow no longer gives the previous commands. A clear command will restore the prompt & cursor. This bug appeared a week or two after I installed CentOS5. Bob T.

ip_conntrack table filling up, dropping packets

Hi, my ip_conntrack table is filling up and now my server is dropping packets. I'm running CentOS release 4.4 (Final) on a fairly busy webserver. The table is full of various connections, including a lot of "ESTABLISHED" tcp connections from my webserver (the src is my webserver ip), and some other random connections to my webserver, and many "ASSURED" connections. So why is it filling up? I changed the default timeout value like so: echo 36000 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established but I don't think that's had any effect. any thoughts? what additional info can I provide that would be helpful? I did find a script that clears out some of the stale connections using hping2, but I don't know if that's really a great solution to this problem. cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max # 34576 after cleaning out the ip_conntrack table using an hping2 script: cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack | wc -l # 3702 -- this number was around 34000 before I cleared it out because it was dropping packets. rebooting the machine, of course, clears it out. I've spent many hours banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out, reading in google groups and in various forums, to no avail. My webserver does send out emails to a few thousand registered users (if they opt it for the email) every day. Thank you for your time! I hope I sent this to the right list. Freemind 0.8 problems on Centos 5

I just installed my rpms I bulit and scarfted for Freemind 0.8 on Centos 4.x on my Centos 5.0 system. I referenced all the proper 5.0 repos. But.... No keyboard control (oh, Freemind is a platform independent Java applet). That is <Enter>, <Insert>, <vntrl-S>, etc do NOTHING. The long node format does not display. I can edit the node, and see the edit dialog, but the map view does not show the contents. Any hints on where to look for the problem?

Trying to understand Suspend 2

I am trying to understand Suspend 2 and what I have to do to get it working in Centos 5. There is quite a bit for it at ATrpms: http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/hibernate-suspend2/ http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/kernel-suspend2/ The later is the kernel patches that they refer to at the Suspend2 website, so I don't have to recompile the kernel? I noticed that over at: http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/madwifi/ There are even rpms for BOTH Suspend2 and Madwifi (my situation, and I have been using the 'regular' madwifi parts for over a year now). So can anyone give me a bit of guidance/confirmation on setting up Suspend2. Thanks.

Have you been patient enough? On some low-end CPUs it may take up to 15-20 minutes to solve dependencies! RHEL5 has the slowest Anaconda I've ever seen. CentOS 5 hung while "Checking dependencies..."

Since CentOS 4 turned out to be short on supporting my sound card, I picked up a the DVD for 5. I have been running 4 on this PC fine though. The install hangs in "Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation..." with the bar at 3/4 or so. I thought this was because I took the offer to upgrade my CentOS 4 installation, but it hangs at the same spot for a new install, even when I do not tamper with the selected packages. What's my approach to move forward? I did check the DVD with the verification step. Rob

autofs/mount error

Howdy, Perhaps somebody here has a clue, i got this error via autofs mount and manual mounting as root: automount[30856]: >> mount: RPC: Authentication error; why = Client credential too weak been looking on google and seen this thread http://toasters.mathworks.com/toasters/7215.html but unfortunately seems our netapp/storage guy as well as myself are not convinced enough since this only happen to one particular host. Any idea, clue? /jbt
