Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

Reformatting a USB drive

Gnumeric

Hi, I am trying to install Gnumeric in CentOS 4 and I can't. It complains about quite a few dependencies failing. It suggested installing some postgresql librairies, openldap librairies... I did that, now I still get: dependencies failed: libmdb/libmdbsq/libsqlite/libxbase/libtds. Is there a yum repository that has them or a yum repository for gnumeric? I have tried Dag, he does not, he has libgda, but that has other requirements... -- Thanks

[Semi-OT] Advice on large webmail setup

Hi all, As the resident Linux guru, I've just been tasked with costing a webmail setup for about 600 000 users. They each have 10MiB (small, I know) mailboxes. The current setup has about 40 million web page accesses per month. Has anyone here any experience with this kind of thing? CentOS4 and older megaraid

Release notes say no support for the RAID card in a box I just picked up...is there no hope for this box running 2.6 kernel? http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/release- notes/as-x86/ The kernel shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 includes the new megaraid_mbox driver from LSI Logic, which replaces the megaraid driver. The megaraid_mbox driver has an improved design, is compatible with the 2.6 kernel, and includes support for the latest hardware. However, megaraid_mbox does not support some of the older hardware that was supported by the megaraid driver. Adapters with the following PCI vendor ID and device ID pairs are not supported by the megaraid_mbox driver: vendor, device 0x101E, 0x9010 0x101E, 0x9060 0x8086, 0x1960 <--- my card ---< The lspci -n command can be used to display the IDs for adapters installed in a particular machine. Products with these IDs are known by (but not limited to) the following model names: * Dell PERC (dual-channel fast/wide SCSI) RAID controller * Dell PERC2/SC (single-channel Ultra SCSI) RAID controller * Dell PERC2/DC (dual-channel Ultra SCSI) RAID controller * Dell CERC (four-channel ATA/100) RAID controller * MegaRAID 428 * MegaRAID 466 * MegaRAID Express 500 * HP NetRAID 3Si and 1M Both Dell and LSI Logic have indicated that they no longer support these models in the 2.6 kernel. I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my Nagios install wasn't working on CentOS 4.5 (I'm used to Debian), and so I disabled SELinux and everything magically started working. Is this a good long term idea? Or is there a better way of doing things?

Installing VMWare Server 1.0.3 on CentOS 5

I was in the process of installing VMWare Server 1.0.3 via the tarball I downloaded from their site. When it asked for the C header files for my installed kernel (2.6.18-6), hey could not be found. When I initially installed CentOS, I made sure everything was included, so I am at a loss why they can not be found. I haven't tried installing it via the RPM, but I don't think it will make a difference. Any and all thoughts are appreciated. Thanks! Mark

Hi, I am searching smbmount command on centOS 5. On, CENTOS 4.4, I used it as follows to backup data to a window PC. I want to do it on CentOS 5 now. mount -t smbfs -o ip=192.168.5.225,username=mailbackup,password=secret //server/mail_backups /mnt/maildaily I can not issue such command on centos 5. When I try , It gives below error. Install XGL under CentOS 5 with ATI X600 and dual-head configuration

Hi again. I've got a laptop with an ATI X600 inside, perfectly working xorg with dual head configuration, 2 desktops (without xinerama). I've got 2 xorg.conf files, one for propietary ATI (fglrx) driver, and other to use the open source driver. The difference is very notorious. The problem I have is that I read (Saint Google) that to work with compiz/beryl and dual-head configuration, I need to install XGL. That is why I wrote this message. Has anyone been installed XGL under Centos 6 using dual-head configuration and fglrx driver? Does anyone know links to tutorials/repositoris that I can use to install XGL? Does anyone know information on How-to configure XGL to allow the dual-head configuration use? My system is updated and is working perfectly with xorg. But I want to know how to run beryl in my system and make a mini how-to to configure it with xgl+fglrx+dual-head and send it to centos wiki. I have been reading info about the same, but under Ubuntu or FC distros, but it is incomplete or difficult to translate on Centos distro (at least for me). Por ello es por lo que os escribo el siguiente e-mail. ¿Alguno ha instalado XGL bajo CentOS 5 usando fglrx y 2 monitores? ¿Alguno conoce links hacia tutoriales/repositorios que pueda usar para instalar XGL? ¿Información sobre cómo configurar XGL para usar 2 monitores? Indicaros que el sistema está actualizado y está funcionando perfectamente con las xorg. El tema es que me apetece probar cómo montar beryl en el mismo y hacer un pequeño HOW-TO para 2 monitores y publicarlo o mandarlo al wiki, ya que he visto información para Ubuntu/FC6, pero o es incompleta o difícil de adaptar (al menos para mí) a Centos 5. So I tried to build openoffice 2.0.4-5.4.17.2 (sans language packs) on a x86_64 from RH 5 source rpm. The build bombed after an hour elapsed and it used up about 10 GB of space with an error about missing java. So I just blew it off, erased the files written by the build and decided to wait until the rpm showed up in the updates. I don't want to repeat that exercise if 2.0.4-5.4.17.2 is destined to show up in the updates. If not, does anyone have any idea what java it needs (or what changes have be made to the spec file) to successfully build the rpm. Strange slowdown occasionally in CentOS 5.0

For some reason, parts of my system are now slowing down to an agonizing crawl from time to time. At first it was my VMWare Server 1.04, which became such a pain that I rebooted. Then, it looked like it was a network-induced thing because the prime culprit was SeaMonkey, particularly with multiple tabs open. I did an ifdown and ifup on my NIC and that seemed to help for a while. But then it hit OO and I'm baffled. It seems that the second time I open any document, particularly with OO Writer, the load and save times are dramatically extended - we're talking five to ten minutes. I don't even know what information I should include here that might help, but here's what I have running at the moment: OS/Hardware Config: OS : CentOS 5.0 (2.6.16-8.1.6 Linux kernel) x86_64 with latest updates CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ M/B: ECS NFORCE4M-A ram: 2GB OCZ DDR2 800 (PC6400) hds: 160MB + 120MB Maxtor PATA UDMA-133 (160 is the boot drive) sds: 300GB Seagate SATA-150/300 (/boot and / are here) 320Gb WD SATA-150/300 vid: geFORCE7100gs (nVidia) PCI-E x16 lpr: Minolta QMS PagePro 1100 laser printer on /dev/lp0 mod: Agere Systems 56k WinModem (Lucent) nic: onboard (mobo-nvidia) Any suggestions or more information needed? CentOS5: Can't Access the Web Using Firefox Web Browser

Many times (not always) when I click on a URL in an email, the cursor (rotating arrow) lasts for 5-10 seconds, then nada. If I exit email to the desktop,nether the tool-bar icon, nor the Applications->Internet->Firefox Web Browser route will get me unto the web although the cursor shows a rotating arrow for a few seconds. Some other task may be executing as the hard disk is working away. Yet,I can get into Email without waiting (higher priority interrupt?). 1. Shouldn't there be a way of re-assigning priorities to the interrupts? 2. If my request has to wait, why should it be dropped completely making me re-enter the request every 5 seconds? In the market for a new (old) laptop

Changes at my day job (we have a big merger being finalized), has me in the market for a new laptop. They may require me to only run the approved XP build on the system they provide. I do not know if they will fund another unit for me or not, so I am looking to go cheap. Here is what I am looking for: Runs Centos (duh!) Supports Suspend to memory as well as to disk. Bootable from USB devices, e.g. USB CDdrive, SD card, etc. 12" LCD, ie. a small unit that can be used on a plane! Good battery life, 2nd battery an option (min 4hr battery time, perfer 8hr). Swappable drives (preferably not requing a screw driver as my old Portege or a non-findable drive carrier as my HP nc4010). Built in Ethernet, and 2 USB 2.0 ports miniPCI wireless (external antenna options would be nice!) Eraser-head mouse pointer (IBM thinkpad-style), optional addtional touchpad (I hate touchpads for D&D. Bluetooth would be nice, but own many Bluetooth USB tokens. Don't need weight, power-draw of a CD/DVD drive, got a USB one when needed. Did I say light? I will be having to drag at least 2 laptops on planes all the time now. I dislike Dells, am OK with IBM (but it's not IBM any more!), Toshiba Porteges are old friends, and HP Compaq nc4000s.... So who has what working?????

Hello list, I'm trying to compile a php4 package for centos5 and I'm stumbling across some "oddity" with the symbolic links of at least one library. But it's not a php4 problem, so read on. The package 'js' gives the library /usr/lib64/libjs.so.1 but shouldn't there be a link from /usr/lib64/libjs.so to /usr/lib64/libjs.so.1? Otherwise my compiler call % gcc -o conftest -O2 -g -pipe -Wall -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fexceptions -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -m64 -mtune=generic -Wall -fno-strict-aliasing -I /usr/include/httpd -I /usr/include/apr-1 -Wl,-rpath,/lib -L/lib -ldb -lreadline -ltermcap -Wl,-rpath,/usr/kerberos/lib64 -L/usr/kerberos/lib64 conftest.c -lexpat -lcrypt -lpspell -lpcre -lm -lgmp -ldb -lcurl -lbz2 -lz -lresolv -lm -ldl -lnsl -lssl -lcrypto -ldl -lz -lcurl -lgssapi_krb5 -lkrb5 -lk5crypto -lcom_err -lresolv -ldl -lidn -lssl -lcrypto -lz -lcrypt -ljs will only return /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ljs collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Because ld looks for the library at different places but always with an plain .so extension. A call to 'ldconfig' doesn't change the situation: % ldconfig ; find /lib{,64} /usr/lib{,64} | grep libjs.so /usr/lib64/libjs.so.1 To make a long story short: I can create the symbolic link on my own, that is not a problem but I'm using mock to build my RPMs and changing the root enviroment seems to be a very dark side for fixing the problem. And the mock user can't change the root enviroment because he's a simple user and not root. Is this a bug or a feature beyond my little wisdom? How can I fix this in an "appropriate" way?
