NFS v4

Hello all, Do you guys use NFS v4 in production? Is the Linux implementation ready enough? The feeling I'm getting by looking at RH doc and other web sites is that v4 was added in a hurry and is not mainstream yet. I don't want to use something too cutting edge that will break down the road. Is that the case? In my case, it would be a CentOS5 server with CentOS4 client. Thanks, -- Francois Caen

CentOS 5 problem with 2xRocketRaid 2220

Hi! I have an supermicro storage server http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/932/SC932T-R760.cfm with two RocketRaid 2220. my problem is that at install a looong time is spent on detecting some ataxx in order to end in ATA[0-15].00 : Failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4) for each channel from 16 it can take some 15-20 s. the same happens at boot time (which can take some 4-5 min). Is there a way to avoid this? Thank you for any help, Best regards, Adrian

Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5

Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: check pass; user unknown May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=localhost.localdomain which seems to indicate that it cannot find the user in the directory. CentOS 5 Issues Booting Under VMWare

Hi, VMWare has been a great tool for me to experiment with CentOS 3 and CentOS 4. However, I'm running into issues with CentOS 5. First, it is *extremely* slow to boot (as in it takes over an hour to boot CentOS 5 on a machine that boots CentOS 3 & 4 in less than one minute). Then, after an hour of slowly watching the messages go by on the console and the CPU of the host machine pegged at 100%, I get this error: VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) NOT_REACHED F(562):1742 A log file is available in ... I have done a "minimal install" of CentOS 5 (all checkboxes in the category/task selection screen are unchecked -- so to X-Windows involved) and the virtual machine has 750MB of RAM. I'm using VMWare Workstation 4.5 and the host OS is Windows XP Pro. I have not been able to install the VMWare tool since I can't get it to finish booting. Has anyone else run into this? I have seen some discussion on the list about VMWare and CentOS 5, but nothing that seemed to match what I'm running into. Thanks, Kennedy

CentOS 4.5 FTP install

I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.5 to install via FTP. I have a local FTP server with a mirror of 4/os/i386. I boot from the first CentOS 4.5 CD and enter 'linux askmethod'. I choose the FTP installation method and DHCP for the IP configuration. At the FTP Setup screen I enter the IP address of my server and the path of the i386 directory. Selecting OK there takes me to the CD Found screen that asks if I want to perform a media test. Skipping the media test takes me back to the FTP Setup screen. (Performing the media test shows that my CD is OK, and then takes me back to the FTP Setup screen.) All I can do now is bounce between the FTP Setup and CD Found screens. My FTP server log shows an attempt to fetch CentOS/base/product.img, which doesn't exist. Any idea what's going on here? Ron

CentOS Based Linux Firewall Document

I know that some of you from the list have asked me in the past for a copy of my CentOS based Linux Firewall document. There are also those that have no clue what I am talking about. This is for the former group... There is a new version of my document out. It's changed quite a bit since the last person asked me for it. Some of the changes are: * Updated the scripts in the Useful Shell Scripts section. * Changed the document format to reflect more of a professional document. * Added High Availability. * Many other small items. There is a complete changelog "built in" in the document, so you can compare it to the version that you already have to see what's changed. Error on CentOS 5

I just installed CentOS 5 on a computer. On boot, I get the a error message, related to 2 SATA disks. These errors did NOT appear on version 4.4 with the EXACT same hardware. Could someone please tell me what these error are and if there is some known way to prevent them? x display issue

Hello, I've got a new Centos5 install and got x installed with gnome on it. The problem is the display looks awful and keeps flickering. It failed the monitor probe and doesn't have horizontal and vertical refresh rates in the xorg.conf file. I believe this is part or all of the issue, i took it down to 8-bitt color and 800x600 resolution, that didn't help. The video card is an sis 741/760 AGP integrated job, the monitor has no designation, except compaq. Does anyone know how i can find the values i need? Thanks. Dave.

Trouble connecting to CentOS 5.0 host sound device from Windows guest on VMWare Workstation 5.5.4

I am running VMWare Workstation 5.5.4 on a CentOS 5.0 host (2.6.18-8.1.4 kernel) and I have been haiving some trouble with my sound device on the Guest Windows XP SP2 OS. When I first had trouble under CentOS 4.4, WS 5.5.3, it was usually when the sound device on the host was actually busy. However, now I can't use the sound device at all - I keep getting this error: "Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy Failed to connect virtual device sound." on EVERY attempt to connect to the CentOS native sound driver. I am running a few command windows, SeaMonkey and VW WS and nothing else. ps -ef reveals nothing about /dev/dsp and I'm not entirely sure where else to look. I had shut off the sound device (disconnected by default) because Windows likes to make noise and this routinely not only did not work, but it also kept interrupting everything I was doing with gnome windows announcing the above error. Now it just doesn't connect at all, no matter what the host is doing. Note: This is my work machine. At home I run VMWare Server 1.0.3 and only have this problem when the sound device is in fact busy (like I'm playing music or watching a video or something). I am running VMWare 5.4 not 4.5, so my tests are meaningless to you. ---------------------------------------------- I am running the free VMWare Server 1.0.3 and CentOS 5 seems to load fine for me. It loads up in a reasonable amount of time given that it is running on a workstation in a virtual session. What is the configuration of your VMWare session? I set mine up using mostly default choices. I did change the "system type" To RHEL 4 and I bumped the default RAM up to 512M. -- MailScanner is like deodorant...
