help with a module on centos 5

Hi all, I am trying to get the modules evbug.c running on centos 5. I took the source file from the kernel, put it in a directory. I made a Makefile: obj-m := evbug.o all: make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) modules clean: make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) clean I then type make; insmod evbug.ko and type dmesg and say the following: evbug.c: Event. Dev: isa0060/serio0/input0, Type: 0, Code: 0, Value: 0 evbug.c: Event. Dev: isa0060/serio0/input0, Type: 4, Code: 4, Value: 22 evbug.c: Event. I mean the source talks about dumping all key events into syslog How do I read syslog? /var/log/messages is not showing the information. Only when I type dmesg do I see the data. In what file is dmesg information??? The goal here is to read the file looking for occasional key presses. Thanks, Jerry

Hi all, I'm very glad to have found this list as I've made a leap of faith and installed CentOS5 as my new testbed/dev machine. An advance 'thank you' to all more experienced than I for answers and a promise to be concise in my (surely about to become) abundant questions and just as forthcoming with answers I may have to help others. Retrive data from repartitioned / reformatted hard drive?

Hi, The title says it all. One of my clients showed me a 120 GB hard drive that his daughter accidentally formatted, according to him. I booted the first CD I had at hand - a Slackware 11.0 install CD - and launched cdfdisk /dev/hda. cfdisk informed me that there was even no partition table. So much for reformatting. cfdisk only shows me 120 GB of free space. Any way to retrive data on this hard drive? Some magic live distribution to read data on repartitioned / reformatted hard drives? any suggestions? thanks, Niki

Error: Module Microcode does not exist... at boot time

I have just installed Centos 5.0 from DVD. I have also run the software updates and I think everything is up to date. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA945GM-S2 with an Intel E2140 processor. At boot time if I select show details - there is one error shown "in red", Like this: Applying Intel CPU microcode update. FATAL: Module microcode not found. ERROR: Module microcode does not exist in /proc/module [FAILED] The boot still seems to go ok - and the system seems to work - but I guess it is probably using some subset of the CPU instruction set. Can anyone tell me exactly what this means - and why the module is missing. The CPU I am using is fairly new - so I am not surprised that the Centos 5.0 release might not recognise it - but I would have thought that updates might have fixed it by now. Richard.

If you just want to confirm that some data is still there, you might try something like: 1) Boot from any Linux live CD (knoppix, Fedora 7, etc.). 2) Open a command window. 3) Assuming this is the only hard drive and it's /dev/hda: dd if=/dev/hda | grep 'some *short* string that should be present' 4) If your string survived, you should see something like "binary file matches'. On my laptop (dual boot to XP home or CentOS5) I see: [root@spindle ~]# dd if=/dev/hda | grep -i dos Binary file (standard input) matches Alternatively, there are some disk editors for Linux. Google turned up LDE which claims to mimic the old "Norton Disk Editor." If you go this route, you would probably do better sticking the drive into a Linux system although you might be able to find someone who has set up a Linux recovery live CD that includes LDE. I haven't used LDE but the old Norton tool was pretty amazing. Any idea what file system was on the disk originally (vfat, ntfs, ext3, etc.)? Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n. [yum] problem with columns width output

Hi, I have a package named like this : httpd.i386 2.0.59-1.el4s1.5.el4.c centosplus As you see, version is too long for the column width. I tried to export COLUMNS with a higher value : no change. Any idea ? -- Martin

CentOS iso for Sparc64 machine

Hi, I have been looking for CentOS for sparc based machines without luck. I tried to use birorrent to download it without luck. For those curious, since the devs haven't given an answer yet to the future of the Postfix with MySQL in CentOS Plus, here is the patch to add the MySQL support back into Postfix that I used in case anyone needs it. I might have messed up the naming but I tried to pick something relevant that wouldn't be later confused with what they would do too much.
