Firefox and CPU spikes?

Is it just me, or does anyone else experience their CPU utilization spiking to 100% for about 5 to 10 seconds when Firefox is about to download a file, via http or ftp? Then, after the file starts to download, the CPU usage drops back down to normal. I've got Firefox 2.0.0.4 running on CentOS 4.4 32-bit. Thanks. Scott

Steve French (samba team) made available a newer cifs version (1.48) backported to old kernels: http://lists.samba.org/archive/linux-cifs-client/2007-April/001898.html Using this cifs code Jeff Layton (RH) has built some test kernels after making appropriate adjustment for RHEL: http://people.redhat.com/jlayton/ You can try the test kernel to see if the problems have been fixed, or if you would rather not use any test kernel, you can just get the cifs module compiled. I have compiled a x86_64 version of cifs for CentOS 5 for my own use and confirmed it has eliminated the bug that causes system crashes in kernel 2.6.18 (C5's default). Akemi

Cannot Start CLVMD on second node of cluster

Hi, I'm trying to configure Red Hat GFS but have problems starting CLVMD on the second node of a 3-nodes cluster. Hello, We have recently purchased two Supermicro servers, AS-1021M-T2RB (http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/system/1U/1021/AS-1021M-T2RV.cfm), and have built them both with CentOS 5 operating system. They are identical, apart from the manufacturer of the disk drives. Kernel is: Linux version 2.6.18-8.1.6.el5 (mockbuild(a)builder6.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-52)) #1 SMP Thu Jun 14 17:29:04 EDT 2007 Both servers have 2 SATA disks, and using software RAID 1. Simple Question about Resolving Names without suffix with bind

Hi I am trying to use Bind as named. And I have successfully set up a chrooted bind. Anyway, I cannot have it resolve "www" directly. For example, when I am using nslookup, when enter www.example.com, it will resolve. But when enter www, it will not. I want to have www resolve to www.example.com, what should I do? I have already set $ORIGIN in the zone file, but it does not work. Thanks.

non-privaledged reboot ???

Greetings On centos 5, if I ssh in as a regular non-superuser account and go to the sbin dir to issue a reboot command, it wont do it as says you must be superuser If you are on the console logged in as a non-superuser account and do the same thing, it will reboot. Is this a feature, or a bug? - rh

Seeking pointers to info about LVM migration and performance

We have a large MySQL database currently running on a CentOS 3.x server with an external SCSI RAID device. This is currently an ext2 filesystem because it was migrated once previously from an even older RedHat system. We need to add storage capacity to this database and prepare for additional future growth. One of the options under consideration is to move to CentOS 5 and use LVM. Of some concern is that we run some pretty heavy-duty queries against this database in close to real time, so we don't want the switch to scalable storage to have a significant impact on read latency. Consequently I'm looking for sources of information on two topics: - What kind of performance can we expect from an LVM group as compared to mounting the RAID array directly? - What's involved in migrating our filesystem from ext2 to LVM with a minimum of downtime? Thanks in advance for directions.

Virtualization question

I want to use Centos5 as my host os and virtualize a windows server on it.
