Help with custom udev rule

Hi, I am trying create a custom udev rule to change the group and permissions on /dev/net/tun. Some research indicated that rather than directly editing the rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules that I should create my own local rules file something like 10-local.rules which contains KERNEL=="tun", NAME="net/%k", OWNER="root", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE="0660" But unfortunately when I reboot the permissions are still 0 crw------- 1 root root 10, 200 Oct 24 14:09 /dev/net/tun Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or point me to some clear documentation about creating custom udev rules. Thanks

Recommended Configuration Control Software?

We have several dozen production Linux servers and I would like to have better control over what files are changed, by whom, when they were changed, etc. Because these are all production servers that are in use 24x7, we do not have the luxury of simply doing a clean build, taking md5sums of each file, and then doing fresh installations. I need a system that can take in-place snapshots of each server's configuration files, store them in some kind of database or text file, and notify me whenever something changes. I've used tripwire in the past - do you have any other recommendations for this type of project?

dumpe2fs and repquota not agreeing on block size

Hello: I am trying to set up user quotas on my /var partition to enforce limits on user's mailbox sizes. The machine is running CentOS 5. When I do this: /sbin/dumpe2fs /dev/md2 | grep 'Block size' Block size: 4096 That tells me the block size is 4k. But, if I do: repquota /var It is telling me that one of my users is currently using 10264 blocks. But, if I look at their mail file, it is 10493792 bytes, which means they should be using 2562 blocks or so. Also, if I do: df /var I get this Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/md2 39674140 20401792 17224468 55% /var Which tells me the blocks are 1K in size. The repquota result makes much more sense with a 1K block size. Any idea why dumpe2fs is giving a 4K block size? Hi al.I have a problem with pam.d authentication rules. I searched on google and modified my system-auth file.Bu some rules does not works properly my system-auth like below: -------------------------- auth required pam_env.so auth required pam_tally.so onerr=fail per_user deny=3 auth sufficient pam_unix.so md5 nullok try_first_pass auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 500 quiet auth required pam_deny.so account required pam_tally.so account required pam_unix.so account sufficient pam_succeed_if.so uid < 500 quiet account required pam_permit.so password requisite pam_cracklib.so minlen=8 lcredit=2 ucredit=2 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3 password sufficient pam_unix.so md5 shadow nullok try_first_pass use_authtok password required pam_deny.so session optional pam_keyinit.so revoke session required pam_limits.so session [success=1 default=ignore] pam_succeed_if.so service in crond quiet use_uid session required pam_unix.so ------------------------------------- 1-) Password is not stored md5 style in shadow file when i create new user with password. But when i change user password ,it is stored md5 style in shadow file. 2-) retry=3 is working good but minlen,lcredit,ucredit,dcredit,ocredit does not work ? I can set password less then 8 lenght. Where am i doing wrong ? I looked sample configures on internet and http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/Linux-PAM-html/old/pam-6.html and it is same with my system-auth .Why minlen,lcredit,ucredit,dcredit,ocredit while retry is working ? RHEL 4 + 5 wallpaper?

Hi, I know I know: upstream minus artwork. Nevertheless, I admit I'd like to simply use the RHEL background wallpaper for my desktop. Something like: http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/images/rhel4/44-Desktop.jpg Can't seem to find these (4 and 5). Any idea? Cheers, Niki

how to boot centos from install CD

Hi, I make a mistake so that crash the whole system which can not boot from hard dist. But I am sure if I can access that hard disk, I can fix it. Now, the problem I met is how to boot from other media such as CD and then mount the hard disk so as to fix the mistake. Could anybody give me some advices, thanks in advance. Ian

Interesting faillog files.

Hi all CentOS users, I looked /var/log/messages log file and i realize something in "messages" files like below; --- Oct 24 04:02:42 cube2 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 1545 --- "sdc" is my storage and i switched off storage at 6 PM. and when i checked messages log file,I saw faillog under /var/log directory like below: -rw------- 1 root root 137438953440 Oct 24 15:39 faillog its ~136 GB but my disk table size like below: /dev/md1 497G 19G 453G 4% / /dev/md3 157G 15G 134G 10% /backup /dev/md0 243M 21M 210M 9% /boot tmpfs 32G 0 32G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdc 805G 25G 739G 4% /mnt/sdc Where is ~136 GB faillog file ? ls and rm: "argument list too long"

Since when is there a limit in how long directory listings CentOS can show (ls), or how large directories can be removed (rm). It is really annoying to say, for example rm -rf /var/amavis/tmp and get only "argument list too long" as feedback. Is there a way to go round this problem? Simple audio recording app?

Hi, I'd like to get my microphone to work (mainly to use it with Skype). I've just been looking for a simple audio recording app, as I vaguely remember having seen such a thing before, only I can't seem to find it anymore. I'm using the default GNOME desktop with the latest CentOS 5. Any suggestions? Niki
