Lost icons and background on 5.2 desktop

Somehow I did something that caused my gnome desktop to evaporate. The only thing that hasn't vanished is the task bar I have set up at the bottom of the screen. Which configuration files/directory may have become corrupt or gone? Any help would be appreciated. postifx mail server with ldap

Hi all !! I looking for a good tutorial about mail server with postfix/dovecot and ldap. Please somebody can help me ? Virtual NICs (aliases like eth0:1) won't come up after reboot

With one problem down I still have another remaining. Since the installation of our primairy webserver we have had a problem with the network aliasses. Our server has 8 IP adresses so we used the tool provided in the GUI to specify (and name - for our own convinience) eth0 aliasses with the other 7 adresses. After setting them up, applying them, activating them and restarting 'networking' (I dare say this is a lot of button pushing just to enable one NIC) all is well and every program can use its preferred IP. However, after a reboot, all aliasses are disabled: they are present in the configuration but they are not activated. I feared I did something wrong so I removed all addresses, tried to find more clues in the docs and now I'm back where I started. How can I figure out what is wrong? I might add that I am not afraid of using a console (actually prefer it on linux servers) but I am new to CentOS so I tried to do everything by using the GUI - which in this case keeps failing... NTP problems

My server is supposed to be using ntp, with nothing changed from the defaults set up by CentOS5. However, daily I see log entries like Total synchronizations 2 (hosts: 2) **Unmatched Entries** sendto(193.6.222.20) (fd=21): Invalid argument: 1 time(s) sendto(141.89.226.2) (fd=21): Invalid argument: 1 time(s) Does this mean that ntp is failing? I assume so, and if so, how do I change the sources to something that will work? Anne

Hi all, I have one maybe stupid question - is there in CentOS 5 packages of Compiz Fusion? I am deciding between Fedora and CentOS to install it to my netbook and this is one of most important features that I want. Thank for replies

External ext3 USB Hard drive and selinux

I was directed to post this on the mailing list. See the following forum post as a reference. http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16710&forum=42 I formatted my external ext3 372GB USB hard drive in ubuntu and now want to use it in Centos. I made sure that my group/user numbers were the same. I was not able to write to the mounted USB hard drive (HD). I suspected selinux and shut it of and I was able to copy the file! I set selinux back to enforce and rebooted. I like the security features of selinux. I tried: 1) chcon -v 2) restorecon -Rv /media/disk 3) cp -P and still am not able to write to the USB HD. The sad part is I can delete files from the USB HD. See forum post for details. I tried it in fedora 9 and it is able to write to the USB HD I tried an 32GB USB memory stick in Centos 5.2 and it worked! I am wondering why it doesn't work for my USB HD? The only difference is the the size. Your help would be much appreciated.

linux rescue - complete list of utilities and commands?

On this URL: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-rescuemode-bo… there is a description of "linux rescue" which includes the following: From the prompt, you can run many useful commands, such as: ssh, scp, and ping if the network is started dump and restore for users with tape drives parted and fdisk for managing partitions rpm for installing or upgrading software joe for editing configuration files Question: Is there a complete list somewhere, of which System Utilities and Commands are available, if one boots into "linux rescue"? TIA!
