Yum weirdness

Hi all, Running CentOS 5.2 x86. Tried to do a yum update on the command line a while ago and an error stating "No module named yum" popped up. I then tried importing the yum module by first entering "python" in a terminal window and then "import yum", for which I was rewarded with a "ImportError: No module named yum". Then I downloaded a yum rpm-package via pbone.net. I got this one http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/8092652/com/yum-3.2.8-9.el5.cen… and then did an rpm -Uvh on the rpm-file, then tried running yum again with no success. I still got the no module named yum-message. I further did a rpm -q yum* and was told that the above rpm wasn't installed, so I redid the install but added --force, but yum still gives the error message. Running rpm -V yum* rpm* python* gives package yum-3.2.8-9.el5.centos.2.1.noarch.rpm is not installed package rpm* is not installed package python* is not installed Which is kinda weird, unless I'm missing something really obvious... On a hunch I ran yum extender from the startmenu, or whatever it's called in CentOS, and this works. It says yum v3.2.8 IIRC is invoked. I got a list of updated packages, the ones Karanbir announced recently and they installed fine w/o any problem. Yum has run fine when I used it about three-four weeks ago. Same problem is seen on three of my workstations. The fourth, a server running the latest x86-PAE kernel runs yum just fine on the command line. The answers I find searching the web more or less replicates the above steps I've already done, so I'm kind off at a loss here on what to do next to have yum on the command-line working. disk space issues...any help is greatly appreciated

Hi all, Please pardon my newbie-ness on this issue....I've a / partition which is full (quite suddenly, actually) and I'm not sure how to fix this. I've searched for uneeded logs, etc in /var/log and /tmp to no avail. The system is CentOS 5.2 and is not connected to the internet, serves as a local LAN server running stock stuff...sendmail, dovecot, apache..nothing strange or special going on. I have additional HDDs available if growing the partition is in order (would appreciate pointers to that, if applicable), but I'm really stumped as to where the space is being eaten up. enable repo download and save but no install

Is there a way to enable a repo, and ask it to download a package and all dependencies and save these files to a given directory then some time later execute a command to install those files that were saved. Is that possible? I would like to take a snapshot of something like VLC on dag and always install those same vlc packages and dependencies that were saved locally. Not go out over the net and install them the next time. I'm not concerned about updates to this package. Jerry

Looking for an application to work with Centos

I'm looking for a application, and or ideas on how to .... Set up a web page that can be cataloged by search engines capturing all of the part numbers in a db. This page would be tied to a MySql or other Linux DB so that people can also do a basic on site part number search.. We have 150,000 different part numbers, we would like all 150,000 picked up by the different search engines. Can anyone come up with any ideas?? The platform is a basic P4 running Centos 5, disk space isn't much of an issue, I have 100 gig available for the application. The only other application on the machine is a picture server for off site auctions, so CPU load isn't major factor. Thanks, john

ORACLE unbreak Linux and CENTOS both source code come from Redhat LINUX. tightvnc server fails to start

I tried to use tightvnc back in August and had some help, but I stopped due to IPv6 support. Now I am back at tightvnc and cannot get the server started. This is on a new Centos install that did have regular vncserver working on it (I did a yum erase vnc-server first). So I have a working /etc/sysconfig/vncserver and my user has the appropriate ~/.vnc files that worked with regular vnc. Logged in as root, I issue: service vncserver start and get: Starting TightVNC remote administration daemon (Xvnc):2:root WARNING: initlog is deprecated and will be removed in a future vncserver: The USER environment variable is not set. [FAILED] But there is a USER environment variable set: set|grep USER PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME%%.*}:${PWD/#$HOME/~}"; echo -ne "\007"' USER=root (remember, I am logged in as root so I can issue the service command) And further in /etc/profile I have: if [ -x /usr/bin/id ]; then USER="`id -un`" LOGNAME=$USER MAIL="/var/spool/mail/$USER" fi The only line in the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers is: VNCSERVERS="2:user" where user is the userid.

PPTP VPN server

Hi I've been using linux to give VPN access to my corporate LAN using the following software: Centos 5.2 x86 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.18.el5xen pptpd (poptop) 1.3.4 ppp 2.4.4 The Centos server has directly connected the Internet Router, on one interface (eth1) and the LAN on another (eth0) and it works as the firewall/VPN server of my LAN. It mostly works, however, if I try to connect using remote desktop (terminal services) to our windows domain controller (for example, it will happen with any windows server) the Centos server will just reboot. I can connect to the windows, authenticate, and work for about 5-10 seconds before the linux reboots. It's not a friendly reboot, it just crashes and restarts. This linux is running virtualized with xenserver express, and the windows domain controller is running as another virtual machine in the same physical computer. I've updated the CentOS server, using yum update but it will still crash. I tried installing pptpd from source, but still crashes the same way. I googled a bit, and somebody said it had a similar issue but solved it lowering the MTU in the WAN interface of the VPN server. I did it, but nothing helped. I've searched bug reports on this, but there seems to be none. Any idea what can I do to fix this? or does anybody know another good VPN server for linux? (I know about openvpn and using ipsec+xl2tpd but these require additional software on the client or are not very linux-friendly). My main requiements for the VPN server are: - it should require no additional software on the windows clients (Vista and XP currently) - it should work fine with Mac OS X and linux clients - if posible, not very hard to setup ;) Thanks a lot, and sorry for the long post. -- Cordialmente, GERMAN ANDRES PULIDO F. replicate package installation on multiple machines

Hi all, Is there a way to dump the current packages installed on a machine and use it do install/uninstall packages on other machines? I've configured one at install time but to speed up other installations I would like to install default packages and then install/uninstall some starting from my first machine configuration... thanks d PS Oh, I'm going to RTFM too... but I'm new to CentOS and yum...
