package 'synchronization' for multiple systems

I'm setting up multiple systems and ideally I want the same package configuration on all of them. So I'm going through yum and rpm queries manually to try and get this done. There must be a better way. Is there a way to use yum or rpm to configure multiple systems with the same packages? If yum or rpm has something native built into it to do this, that would be great. If there's some scripts to simplify some tasks that works too. I've used webmin's 'Cluster Software Package' module, and will probably fall back to it. However I don't think I get the info that yum gives regarding package grouping and what packages are part of what capabilities. Gotta query elsewhere for it. (no disrespect to webmin folks, great tool)

Centos 5.1 ext3 filesystem limit

Centos 5.1 documentation states that the supported ext3 filesystem limit is 16TB, yet I have a 9.5TB partition that is claimed to be too large: mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) mke2fs: Filesystem too large. No more than 2**31-1 blocks (8TB using a blocksize of 4k) are currently supported. Well, out of boredom, I try to sniff username and password from a telnet session. POSIX semaphores in CentOS 5.1?

According to the man pages for sem_wait, etc., POSIX semaphores are available in Linux 2.6 (with the right NTPL threading in glibc). However, I have a program that compiles just fine but won't link because it can't find the library for the semaphore operations. What am I missing? I ran a find and grep through all the libc's on the system and they turned up nothing: $ find /lib /usr/lib -name "*libc\.*" -print -exec nm {} 2>/dev/null \; | grep sem_ (no results) Time is critical (yeah, I know...). poppler-utils missing pdftoppm

A bit of Googling and I found where pdftoppm is supposed to be included with poppler-utils package. I check on my FC 7 system which is running poppler-utils poppler-utils-0.5.4-7.fc7, and pdftoppm is physically there and located in /usr/bin. I'm running CentOS 5 with poppler-utils-0.5.4-4.3.el5_1. Is this a bug? Or is this resolvable? Samba GUI interface

CentOS 5.1 I was just trying to add users and shares to Samba from GUI interface. I've already added users from command line. Regardless, when I go to select users the existing users is blank. When I add a user if it already exists I get a complaint that user exists. If I add a new user from GUI it does not get added to the blank list. OK I just added a user from gui, applied it [HIT OK] went back and tried to add user again but when hitting [OK] complained that user exists. Seems things are working except listing existing users in interface. I can live with this but I'm about to upgrade a server at work and ultimately I was hoping my Windows Sys Admin could manage to administrate Samba. I don't think this will be possible without a GUI.

Set hardware clock manually

I can't reboot a server to set the hardware clock to UTC time, but CentOS was installed with the assumption that the PC was running UTC. Is it possible to update the hardware clock to the right time and therefore allow CentOS to maintain the right time without rebooting? I am hoping to use this route for consistency versus changing how CentOS interprets the time so all servers are the same. Thanks! jlc

system smtp server question

If I have a production mailserver and a series of Linux servers that all develop mail from logging etc, it seems slightly redundant to have so many smtp servers installed on each of those boxes simply forwarding mail as I choose to not have local delivery. Is there a mechanism possible in CentOS to setup a pointer to a different mailserver such that programs like mailx could still send mail? Currently I have postfix setup with maps so that root on server A has mail sent from root(a)server-a.fqdn<mailto:root@server-a.fqdn> and that is relayed to my production box. It just seems like it is an additional service to manage on so many hosts? Thanks! jlc
