Static Linking, C++ Exceptions

I'm having a problem statically linking a big c++ application on Centos4. I can make it work on Centos5 and that's great. I just need to figure out a way to reproduce the problem on a small test case. The specific problem is that when I throw an exception, I get a segfault. It only happens on Centos4, and only on ia-32 machines. When it dies, %gs is 0 which looks tls related. Only problem is that when I write tiny test programs to reproduce this, they work fine. %gs is nonzero and everybody is happy. But on my big hulking app, I can throw and catch an exception immediately on entry to main and it segfaults faithfully. Relevant compiler flags are these: g++ -c -o whatever.o -O0 -ggdb -Wno-deprecated -Werror -fPIC -Dmanything -Imanydirs whatever.cpp g++ -o whatever -static -static-libgcc many.o -Lmanydirs -lpthread -lanotherlib -lzlib -lesmtp -lnsl -lrpcsvc -lcrypt -lacl -ldl -lrt -landmanymore So I'm looking for some guidance on what things I could try to isolate this in a smaller app. -- Darrin

stale NFS locks

Because my primary server went down today, I have a couple of servers that have 'stale NFS mounts' which I can't unmount... # umount /home/storage/users umount: /home/storage/users: device is busy umount: /home/storage/users: device is busy short of restarting...is there a trick that I can do to umount/remount? Widescreen monitor won't configure to a wide screen

I just put a 1680x1050 LCD monitor on my home system, and I went into system-config-display to configure it as such, and it just won't take. I had to tweak some of the settings by hand, but when I log out, I get the wide screen for both the Nvidia driver splash screen and the login screen. But, when I log in, It jumps back to 1280x1024 and refuses to run in wide screen mode. I tried with these commented out, but it still would not work. One thing I noticed is that when the gdm starts up, it goes from "auto adjust" (wide screen) to "analog-d" (non-ws) - dunno what that means. Any suggestions? It's really annoying to have a wide screen and not be able to use it.... Thanks. mhr What am I missing?

rpm dependency question

I have an rpm I've created that has a dependency on a library provided by a third party. This dependency is not specified anywhere in my spec file yet the package seems to know about when I run: # rpm -qip --requires MyPackage.rpm The third party rpm is installed and uninstalled via a vendor-supplied script so that they can prompt you to accept licenses and so on. Problem is, the vendor supplied un-install script fails to un-install because of the dependency MyPackage has on one of it's libraries. Is there a way to build my package so that it has no knowledge of external dependencies? My other option is to alter the vendor supplied uninstall script so that it does rpm -e --nodeps. I'd very much prefer to not mess with the vendor supplied scripts. I guess as a related question, how does my rpm know about external dependencies? Is rpmbuild doing some analysis of it's content via ldd or something? -Mark -- Mark Belanger LTX Corporation

Mounting File Share Using CIFS ?'s

I have been trying to mount a windows file share so I can use it for remote storage particularly for my Deki Wiki attachments. Anyway, I seem to have a mount established by doing the following. 1. Added following line to /etc/fstab //fs01/wikidata /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments cifs user,uid=500,rw,suid,username=wikisvcacct,password=testpwd,domain=corporate 2. Then ran following command to mount it. mount //fs01/wikidata 3. Then ran following command to confirm mount. df Output of 'df': //fs01/wikidata 1821803064 1435671544 386131520 79% /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments This would appear to indicate the mount was successful correct? If I understand this whole thing, if i change directory to /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments would I then be using or looking at //fs01/wikidata ? Or am I still looking at the local file system? Or does it depend on the user? Since I set this up for the dekiwiki user with uid=500, would I logged in as root be able to access this mount or do I need to add another line in the /etc/fstab for root? Thanks!

Will CentOS 6's upstream be based on Fedora 10?

Hi All, The subject says it all. I'm asking because I've found Fedora 9 to be buggy as hell - it is one of the worst Fedora releases I've ever used (and I've been using it since Fedora Core 1). I'm putting up with it for my work laptop, but it's not fun. :( My main home machine is still on Fedora Core 6 and will stay there until CentOS 6 comes out. I don't want to use CentOS 5 because it's upstream is based on Fedora Core 6, and I want something new! When CentOS 6 hits, I will be using it for my work laptop. I might just keep Fedora for home my machine. I haven't decided yet if I want to move up to Fedora 10 or CentOS 6. Wiki updates needed for rpmrepo.org when it's up & running

When rpmrepo.org is up and running properly, there are 2 or 3 Wiki pages that need to be updated. I wiped the HD on my daughter's box and am trying to install multimedia on it again. The change from RPMForge to rpmrepo.org requires some minor updates to several Wiki pages. http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/RPMForge http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories IMHO, the stuff on the Wiki is a wonderful asset. usb to usb comm ports - possible? how?

I have an i686 mono core system configured as a CentOS-5.2 server. It has one DB9P RS-232 serial connector and six USB connectors. The DB9p is configuered as STTY0 for the attached MultiTec MT5638ZBA fax modem. I would very much like to connect my MS WindowsXPpro laptop, which only has USB connectors, to this server via telnet or ssh over a direct connection. Is there a way to connect / configure a comm port to a raw USB port in windows / centos and to use a direct cable connection between the two? Or, is a usb to serial converter device required at both ends? I expect to use either puTTY or hyperterm as the windows client. What I need to know is: Is this is even possible? How do you configure the tty ports on CentOS for this to work? How do you configure the comm port on MS-WinXPpro? What cable does one require? I have never had this problem before since all our hosts have previously come equipped with two serial ports. However, the next generation machines apparently have no RS-232 serial ports at all, just six usb ports. So, this problem might as well be faced now as later, when it is unavoidable.
