SNMP and OID/MIB/MRTG

Hi all. I am having an issue and quite frankly would rather not spend the entire next two days learning the entire snmp program. I am hoping someone out there has used MRTG and SNMP to make it work. I have both installed. Single server, polling itself. Question 1- does snmpd have to run as a daemon, or only run once so I can get OID and MIBs from it? Question 2- does anyone know the command in snmp to get the required OID and MIBs that MRTG needs to use? Or at least the name of it? There are a lot of poorly written man pages, but so far all of them require an MIB or OID to use the commands I have read. Question 3- since not going outside of the server, is there any security setting in some snmp config file that makes it only look on my local server and not allow others to use it or hack it? Question 4- all over the internet there are examples in MRTG using all sorts of made up names like 'crazyguy33@servername' and things like that for the cfg file. And alsoin the snmp forum posts, but no one really talks about where this name comes from other than it is assigned to your network device or something. Any help appreciated. I will post the final solution to how to configure snmp and mrtg to work on centos5.2 when I finally figure it out so no one else has to take all week to do so!!! Whoo hoo!!!

Network issues with CentOS 5.2

I am totally new to using CentOS. Linux in Genera really. I have decent experiencing with terminal code for Macs though. Here's the deal my Boss wants us to move more toward linux for some of our basic users. All I was supposed to do was install CentOS 5.2 and Open Office and disburse the machines. Simple enough right. So I did this with no issue. I ran the interface and installed only GNOME and KDE. After installation was complete I activated the eth-0 and had it on DHCP. I connected to the net fine and began downloading open office. I left for the day and came back and I can no longer get back online. The eth-0 wont even activate unless I manually enter a static IP but still can not establish a connection online. I treid reinstalling to no avail. Even built a completely new box and still no avail. I am using CentOS 5.2 i386 DVD. Like I said I am new to this so any guidance would be appreciated to get me into the Linux world. Strange browser displays with 5.x on Dell GX-260

I had been running CentOS 4.x for quite some time with no problems. Apparently I stubbed my toe when installing CentOS 5 final. Symptoms: various web sites are not properly displayed in Firefox 3.0.1 (or predecessors). In particular, cnn.com and any calls to Google display with a screen full of ascii characters rather than images. When I look at "page info" within Firefox, it shows "quirk" mode rendering rather than "standards compliant" mode. BTW, I'm running the same version (in fact, using the same DVD iso) on my home machine, a Gigabyte system I've cobble up, with no such problem. Any ideas out there? Problem with Arima HDAMA rev.G with Integrated SiliconImage Sil3114 Serial ATA 4 Ports and 1TB SATA disks. Recomendation for a cheap SATA controller for linux software raid?

Dear Everybody, I am telling you the whole story, perhaps you can give me a better idea. Almost 3 years ago I purchased Arima HDAMA rev. G motherboard with integrated Silicon Image Sil3114 Serial ATA 4 Ports SATA I adapter. ( http://www.arimacorp.com/ViewProduct.asp?View=86 ) . BIOS version is 2.13. My intention is to make a file server, using linux software raid, so I bought 2 new shiny 1TB SATA II disks, and installed them. Unfortunately the system does not boot - hangs in the Sil 3114 BIOS initialization stage. Apparently this is a known problem with Sil3114 and Sil3112: ( http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=ata_drives&message.id=… ) The Silicon people have issued a BIOS update for this issue, however they explicitly state - only for ADD-IN cards. Perhaps, integrated controlers share the same eeprom chip with the motherboard BIOS, and an attempt to flash it - will render the system unbootable. For integrated controllers - the mainboard producer should provide the update. Apparently the Arima people have sold their business to http://www.flextronics.com/en/default.aspx. The new site is at http://www.flextronics.com/arima/server/Product/ViewDownload.asp?View=HDAMA…. The last BIOS update is from 8/30/2006. And I think this patch well predates the 1TB hard disks and has been issued before SiliconImage's patch: ( http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=28&cid=15… ) . So I am not willing to risk a BIOS update and I have decided to spend additional cash on a cheap but fast 4 port SATA II controller and use it with Centos 5.2. Where I reside, the following two have caught my attention: ADAPTEC SATA RAID 1420SA Serial ATA-150/Serial ATA II-300 PCI-X 4ch for 120 USD ( http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/entry/AAR-1… ) and PROMISE FastTrak TX4300 Serial ATA II-300 PCI 4ch for 160 USD ( http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?segment=RAID%200/1%20… ) Do you have any experience any of these 2 adapters, operating as plain SATA controllers, under linux software raid? usb irq problem

Is there a step by step approach to securing CentOS 4X (or even RHEL 4X)? I don't mean the stuff in the docs/security guide but a working step by step guide? There used to be packages like rkhunter and tripwire but I don't know if the ones in rpmforge/kbs repo are up to date. Thanks, Josh.

Dear All, Please ignore my previous mail I have using CentOS 4.4 Linux and Kernel Version is 2.6.9-42.EL I have configured Cluster Suite with 2 servers Server 1 : 192.168.13.110 IP Address and hostname is primary Server 2 : 192.168.13.179 IP Address and hostname is secondary Floating : 192.168.13.83 IP Address (Assumed by currently active server) I have configured Ethernet Channel Bonding in Each Cluster Nodes and Channel Bonding Configuration Details are 1) Created bonding devices in "/etc/modprobe.conf" file alias bond0 bonding options bonding miimon=100 mode=1 2) Edit the "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1" configuration DEVICE=eth0 USERCTL= no ONBOOT=yes MASTER=bond0 SLAVE=yes BOOTPROTO=none DEVICE=eth1 USERCTL= no ONBOOT=yes MASTER=bond0 SLAVE=yes BOOTPROTO=none 3) Created a network script for the bonding device is "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0" DEVICE=bond0 USERCTL=no ONBOOT=yes NETMASK=255.255.255.0 GATEWAY=192.168.13.1 IPADDR=192.168.13.110 4) Reboot the system for the changes to take effect. After i am rebooted both the server then cluster node becomes simplex and Services are started on both the nodes The cluster output in primary node Member Status: Quorate Member Name Status ----------- --------- primary Online, Local, rgmanager secondary Offline Service Name Owner (Last) State ------------ ------------ -------- Service primary started The cluster output in secondary node Member Status: Quorate Member Name Status ----------- --------- primary Offline secondary Online, Local, rgmanager Service Name Owner (Last) State ------------ -------------- -------- Service secondary started Before Ethernet Channel Bonding cluster services are active in one node and other nodes acts as passive node. But after Ethernet Channel Bonding cluster services are active on both the nodes I don't know what is the problem and is their any configuration is required in cluster configuration file and cman is working only with eth0 interface Can some one throw light on this peculiar problem Regards -S.Balaji

Squirrelmail not indexing messages correctly

Hi, I have a Centos 5.2 server with sendmail/dovecot/squirrelmail. One of my users is complaining that some messages are not appearing in the message list. After a quick check I found the message in the /cur directory but this messge does not appear in the message list in the expected order. I can access the message if I check the page X or I use the search. The strange part is that most messages appear ordered by the date but this (and others) does not. I've removed the dovecot* in the Maildir with no luck. Any ideas?
