CentOS 5 uses the net-snmp package. I am used to the similar but different snmpd package. They appear to have different conventions about what can be used as a "community string". And when net-snmp sees a community string it doesn't like, it just fails silently without giving an error message. I have not been able to find what net-snmp considers a valid community string. -- Drew Einhorn

Changing swap resume signature location

At boot time, the system is looking for a resume signature on the default SWAP partition that was defined during the OS installation. On several systems, I changed the location of the SWAP partition. rsync problem

Hi everybody, after upgrading a few CentOS machines from 5.0 to 5.2, and during that upgrading rsync from 3.0.0-1.el5.rf to 3.0.3-1.el5.rf (both from rpmforge) rsync stopped working and bails out with a segfault after some undeterministic time (zero to a few seconds) during a sync. Manually going back to 3.0.2-1.el5.rf seems to work. Has anybody experienced similar problems? I'm not sure if I should go the the rpmforge or to the rsync mailing lists with this problem, so I thought I'd ask here if anybody run into similar problems. best regards, __ /homas

GIMP 2.4 on CentOS 5?

Hi, I'm using CentOS 5 on all our desktops here (work & home), and I'm quite happy with it. There's one detail I'd like to change. GIMP comes in version 2.2. There have been some changes in version 2.4, and it's also been around for quite some time. There are quite some functions in 2.4 that I'd like to use. As far as I understand, building GIMP 2.4 would involve some changes to [base] packages, like upgrading GTK. Anyone built GIMP 2.4 successfully without wrecking the system? I guess I'd take an SRPM from FC8 from rpm.pbone.net, and then start from here. Only I prefer to ask first. Cheers from the cloudy South of France, Niki

Backup and reinstall a CentOS server

I've got a CentOS server that crashes due to a bad hard disk. I have got a spare disk and need to format and reinstall CentOS from the SERVER CD. Backup and reinstall is a major PITA because of some of the customisations that I've done e.g. the DNS Server is set to log queries (the default does not do this). Any tips on :- - backing up and reinstalling (is a script available)? - is the SERVER CD still 4.4? - Any suggestions on BIND to log queries without SELINUX throwing a fuss? Thanks for any help! I need help with GRUB

Hello, I need help with grub. I've a PC that I've assembled by my self and the configuration is listed below. AMD Athlon 3600+ 1GB Kingstone RAM 80GB SATA & 40 GB PATA MSI Motherboard And the problem that I'm having is with my two Linux distros. Ive installed CentOS & Windows in my SATA HDD and I've used my complete 40GB PATA HDD for Ubuntu. Well all OS's work fine with out any problems but when I want to boot into CentOS I've to select the SATA as my booting HDD from the BIOS if I want to go to Ubuntu the I've to select my PATA as the default HDD from the menu. So what I want to do is I need to add Both distros in to one GRUB boot loader and the other thing is that both grubs that I've on both HDD s only detects the windows Partition not the Linux partion. So I need to to know how to add bothe Linux versions I've into one GRUB. I want to use the SATA HDD as my default HDD. Regards, Sadaruwan Samaraweera

how can I get the kernel source codes of CentOS5.2

Hi, My jobs need to recompile the kernel codes, but I don't know how to yum the kernel source codes. Any help? Thanks in advance. Ian
