Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

Hi all, Just found out that the Poweredge R300 cant even load the CentOS 5.2 64bit installer. Had to revert to Ubuntu. Seems its a driver problem. Hi All, Yes, I know, it's really really embarrassing to have to ask but I'm being pushed to the wall with PCI DSS Compliance procedure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_DSS) and have to either justify why we don't need to install an anti-virus or find an anti-virus to run on our CentOS 5 servers. Whatever I do - it needs to be convincing enough to make the PCI compliance guy tick the box. So: 1. Has anyone here gone though such a procedure and got good arguments against the need for anti-virus? 2. Alternatively - what linux anti-virus (oh, the shame of typing this word combination :() do you use which doesn't affect our systems performance too much. The reviewed servers run both Internet-facing web applications and internal systems, mostly using proprietary protocol for internal communications. They are being administrated remotely via IPSec VPN (and possibly in the future also OpenVPN). Thanks, --Amos

Easiest way to get samba up and working for Windows users?

Everytime I have to setup samba to handle Windows users, sometime inadvertently goes wrong or doesn't work the way I expected, or takes forever to setup, especially when there are many users and various policies. So far, the easiest, sureest and quickest method appears to be install WindowsXP into VMWare and use it to handle Windows sharing. Needless to say, this strucks me as rather ironic and stupid. Thus could anybody please suggest a working frontend to samba that makes it easy to add users, set their permissions and get something that works like basic windows file sharing? So far I've tried the following which all don't quite work. 1. CentOS's samba configuration tool - added users never show up on the share configuration so the only shares it could create was for public access. 2. Webmin - thinks it added the users, but again they never show up when checked against the bundled CentOS tool and needless to say, the shares never work too 3. Samba SWAT - Very confusing tool, selecting shares sometimes end up as another share, and again, doesn't seem to work. So I just need a very basic tool that will reliably allow me to do the following - specify user name, specify password, and maybe specify a group - specify a share the user or group has read only or read/write access - force new files/folders to take on group ID so that it behaves like a normal windows share Don't need print services or anything, it's just far easier to dump a hardware print server into the network than to contemplate the additional complexity of making something like CUPS work. Just need to make sure that the Windows users can browse to the folders, get a prompt for their login and password where needed. Thanks!

ext3 heavy file fragmentation with NFS write

Hello, Does anybody know how to avoid the file fragmentation when a file is created over NFSv3? A file created locally is OK: dd bs=32k if=/dev/zero of=test count=32x1024 conv=fsync filefrag test test: 10 extents found, perfection would be 9 extents When I create the file in the same dir, but from another machine, mounted over NFS: filefrag test test: 4833 extents found, perfection would be 9 extents With such a file a sequential read is quite slow (~76MB vs >200MB on my raid card). I can just suspect that this is a problem of block allocation when the same file is appended by different processes (8 NFS threads). I've tried mounting ext3 with -o reservation and switch to NFS over TCP, with no improvement. Both systems are Centos 5.2 with kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 The ext3 is mounted with rw,nosuid,nodev,usrquota,grpquota,acl NFS export: rw,sync,no_root_squash 8 NFS threads. Remotely mounted with options rw,intr,nfsvers=3,proto=udp,rsize=32768,wsize=32768 I would be very grateful for any help. Andrzej

Two quick and simple questions; I want to install the "WinPower" software for my new UPS. On their web site, they have a tar.gz file available for download. I know the reasons for staying with RPM, if at all possible. I've Googled and Yahood for ""WinPower"+RPM+Linux and get hits, but no obvious RPM. I tried "yum install winpower" and the response was "no package winpower available" (rpmforge is one of the yum repositories I use, so it's not there, with that name). (a) Is an RPM available for it? (If so, where and what's the name?) (b) If I need to download the tar.gz file and install from that, it looks from their documentation that they install into /opt/MonitorSoftware Is it better to install into /usr/local or into /opt? What is the recommendation for a CentOS box, when installing non RPM software? Where best to install non RPM stuff? TIA!

TIME_WAITs...

Hi, I was asked to check some TIME_WAITs "problems" (my boss thinks there should almost never be any) and I bumped into something strange... All of our servers have apparently normal (in my opinion) 60s TIME_WAITs (even if it strangely caps around 14000 in my tests)... But one of them behaves differently (and my boss thinks it is the normal behavior). If I make 10000 rapid connections/selects/deconnections to mysql on this server, I get like 1 TW after around 3000, another TW around 6000 and another TW around 9000... That makes 3 TWs only. And they last 60 seconds... I am told this server was not really setup differently (no custom kernel). All servers are CentOS 5.2, kernels 2.6.18-92.1.[22|10].el5. I compared the values in sysctl.conf and /proc/sys/net/ipv4/* and nothing different. So, am I correct in thinking that seeing thousands TWs when there was a burst of thousands connections is normal? Any idea why so few TWs on this server? Any conf file I should check? # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout 60 # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_tw_buckets 180000 # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle 0 # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse 0 When I googled for it, many people were pointing to the tcp_fin_timeout value ... Need to test serial port connection

I recently bought a new UPS, and I'm attempting to use nut to monitor it. Following setup instructions everything seemed to go well until it came to testing the connection, which failed. There is just one serial connector on the computer, so I set it to monitor /dev/ttyS0. Either that is wrong, or communication is failing. I've been told to try minicom to monitor it, but I'm not familiar with minicom (or any similar app), so again, I may be wrong in the way I'm trying to use that. I was told that unconnecting the device, then re-connecting it should give me a raft of output to the terminal - I saw nothing. Could someone please give me idiot-level instructions on how to tell whether I'm connecting to the correct port, or whatever other information I need? Thanks Anne

Hi all, I perform a nightly snapshot of /home to a USB attached drive scheduled via cron. The system is CentOS 5.2 and only gets attached to the internet periodically for updates, otherwise serves as a samba server to about 20 Windows clients. The rsync command being used is: rsync -av --delete /home/ /media/bkup320G/ and has been working well until a few days ago. Anyone successfully using CentOS 5 and a Keyspan USA-19HS USB-Serial Adapter?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I occasionally need to connect to a serial device and in the past have used minicom and the Keyspan USA-19HS adapter. It has worked flawlessly. Once I upgraded, I could never seem to make this work. The kernel recognizes the adapter, it gets properly assigned as /dev/ttyUSB0, and minicom seems to transmit data to it (as evidenced by the green LED on the device that flashes whenever I hit a keystroke. The problem is, it never returns any data. If I use VMWare to boot up WinXP I can access anything connected to the adapter, but it grinds me to have to boot up 'doze for that purpose. This morning I ran into the problem again and did some googling to see anyone else had this problem. I found this entry in http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/snapshots/old/patch-2.6.20-git4… Date: Wed Jan 3 15:36:25 2007 +0100 fix for bugzilla #7544 (keyspan USB-to-serial converter) At least the Keyspan USA-19HS USB-to-serial converter supports two different configurations, one where the input endpoints have interrupt transfer type and one where they are bulk endpoints. The default UHCI configuration uses the interrupt input endpoints. The keyspan driver, OTOH, assumes that the device has only bulk endpoints (all URBs are initialized by calling usb_fill_bulk_urb in keyspan.c/ keyspan_setup_urb). This causes the interval field of the input URBs to have a value of zero instead of one, which 'accidentally' worked with Linux at least up to 2.6.17.11 but stopped to with 2.6.18, which changed the UHCI support code handling URBs for interrupt endpoints. The patch below modifies to driver to initialize its input URBs either as interrupt or as bulk URBs, depending on the transfertype contained in the associated endpoint descriptor (only tested with the default configuration) enabling the driver to again receive data from the serial converter. Firefox plugins gone (but only for one user)

Hi gurus I have a CentOS 5.2 current x86_64 that has Thunderbird and Firefox working well for one user account (my wife) but will not play nice for my account. I have uninstalled thunderbird and firefox (via yum) and re-installed - no change. I have just wiped the .mozilla folder and started afresh, but it still shows no plugins, yet the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ has the libflashplayer.so link etc. How does all this stuff get hooked up. I have previously installed firefox direct from their site and not used the CentOS supplied rpm, but now that RH say the light and provides a current version, I use the yum process to get my firefox installed. Everything was working a week or so ago, but when I tried fixing things yesterday, all went rapidly pear shaped. In firefox I pressed the Check Now button under Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > System Defaults and now its gone and lost all my plugins Any idea how to get them back? Looking on the support.mozilla.com/firefox site provides little linux help and seems oriented to windoze users. Appreciate some insight from those who know how this distro hangs it all together.

Hi. I had to update the BIOS of a Silicon Image 3512A Serial ATA controller. I'm not using RAID. When I run the updater program (updflash.exe), it asks me to choose flash memory from a list, something like: AMD Am29F010B (1 Megabit), AMD Am29LV01B (1 Megabit), etc. How can I find out which is flash memory of the controller? I tried VirtualBox but it doesn't appear to work (at least for Windows XP) for a CentOS 4.7 on a Dell Precision WorkStation 390 (quad.) In fact, it pretty easy to crash the machine using the command line interface. There's blurb on the wiki Move a native CentOS4 installation into a Xen DomU but that appears to be Xen running on CentOS 5 install of Xen. I've installed the package kernel-xen. I'm new to Xen and I'm not familiar with the jargon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Article. VI. GNU Screen - emacs mode frustration

I like Gnu screen, but the choice of CTRL-A as the command sequence is extremely unfortunate. Like many other bash users, I use CTRL-A to get back to the beginning of the line (emacs editing mode). How do you all get around this problem? Also, I'm wondering if there is an easy way to get mouse scrolling to work when reviewing terminal history in screen. It's a pain in the arse to CTRL-A then ESC to be able to scroll back.

JOB: hi List, My name is James and I'm an open source recruiter currently working with a client in Reading (Berkshire, UK) who are looking to recruit a database architect (experience with MySQL is not necessarily what the client are looking for, although the database architect should certainly be familiar with MySQL. What’s more important is that the DBA should have experience designing large, replicated, globally distributed databases built for performance). The DB Architect will work closely with the development and operations teams - both of which are growing parts of the clients overall business. Whilst the developers have had some involvement with capacity planning and performance monitoring of the live system in conjunction with the Operations team this responsibility will move entirely to the database architect over time. This isn't a development role so the db architect wouldn't be taking over the writing of all SQL or anything (which would be impractical in any case) but they would be expected to use their expertise in advising the developers how best to tune their code. Stored procedures are not currently used but they will probably look at it in the future and this again would be something that the architect would certainly get involved in as well as requirement to revisit existing SQL with a view to perhaps rewrite and/ or optimise. They are running a mixture of MySQL 4.1 and 5.0. They don't run enterprise as they always aim to employ talented staff so they can support everything as far as possible in house. This goes for the OS as well, which is why they use CentOS and not RHEL. Although as part of the role's remit will be to find new opportunities to exploit new features or better use existing ones there are no immediate plans to upgrade to 5.1 as they are quite happy for early adopters to find and fix the bugs before they make any decision on it. Currently there are no specific bottlenecks or db problems as such, the focus is changing in such a way that they need to be able to store more data and consequently they need to have the architect in place. However, although there are no specific issues, there is also a focus on continual improvement of what they have. As with all IT systems, there is always something that can be optimised. Identifying potential future bottlenecks and avoiding them is also part of the role. In terms of the number of high transactional servers - which would be the definite focus - we are looking at high 30s. They do use MySQL replication but not clustering at this time. I have two CentOS plus x86_64 workstations that as far as possible I am trying to keep the same. One for home, one for my office. I have the 32 bit Firefox installed along with a number of plugins and have just found that firefox no longer plays any shockwave content on my work machine, I have tried disabling the various quicktime, mplayer, realplayer plugins but still no go. Removed firefox and re-installed (via yumex) still no go........ Any other things I can do? Then on my home machine I have lost the ability to click on a http:// link within Thunderbird and have it open the link in Firefox. This works fine on the office machine. It is annoying to have to copy and paste the link to get it to work. I have other CentOS machines (x86) where all this works just fine...... Any pointers to get me heading in the right direction? thanks Rob

Hi, I notice other users reporting problems with NFS lockd and was under the impression the problem was solve with "kernel-2.6.18-92.1.13.el5". I am runing x86_64 versions of "kernel-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.centos.plus" ( i need XFS) on my nfs server and "kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5" on my clients. I constantly get this error "lockd: server 192.168.10.2 not responding, timed out" Does the most recent "centos_x64" kernel has the lockd patch ? maybe my problem is elsewhere, I never had problem with NFS before .. thanks, alain

Greetings list- I have a Samba-centric question to ask. I have a particular user who claims Samba has the ability to allow users to create/edit/modify existing files of a share but NOT delete them. To my knowledge, the aforementioned permissions require the user to have write access to the share which *ALSO* gives them the ability to delete files as well. The Samba server is nothing special, simply the latest Samba running on CentOS 5, ext3 filesystem. I've been around and around on this topic and I'm just hoping someone can give me a little sanity by confirming 'yay or nay' whether this is possible or not. --Tim

Hi, just out of curiosity: Within a kickstart postinstall script, I tried to do a loop mount, which failed. It turns out that there is no /dev/loop0 (no /dev/loop<x>). After creating it with mknod /dev/loop0 b 7 0 everything works fine. Now this script executes in the chroot system. This is the system on the hd. A plain chroot system should not have any /dev or /proc mounted. Hi, I have two servers in the same subnet, one has this arrangement: BOX A [3 ips, one real two vips] BOX B [1 ip] I need to redirect input from one of the vips (192.168.0.1:8080) on BOX A to BOX B (192.168.0.2:8080) and I'm about to pull my hair out. Can anyone lend a hand? All my searching leads me to home firewall type arrangements using DNAT. Greetings list- I've got a server 'in the mail' and I see now on the specsheet that it has Marvell Yukon 8056 NICs onboard. Since I cannot seem to find a HCL for Centos 5 or RHEL5 to help verify, I'd like to know if it works 'out of the box' on CentOS 5.x or is there additional work to make it function (properly)? My searching has revealed that there are in fact two different drivers for Marvell hardware... sky2 and sk8lin? Any pointers, tips, experiences, etc appreciated. Thanks! --Tim

Recover rpm DB corrupted by disk failure?

Over the weekend my workstation (still on CentOS 3) started showing SMART errors, so we shut it down and moved everything onto a new drive. On reboot, the RPM database reports as corrupted and "rpm --rebuilddb" segmentation faults. Is there any reasonable way to recover from this, short of a complete reinstall? The machine is otherwise up though it's quite likely some files have been lost.

GNU Screen Macro?

Anyone know if this is possible with GNU screen? I would like to have a macro or keyboard shortcut whereby the following actions are performed: 1. Open new screen window (CTRL-A C) 2. ssh to some $host 3. Rename current screen as $host (CTRL-A A $host) I can see that typing "screen" while within a screen session opens a new window, however I'm not clear on how to automate steps 2 and 3.

What broke my box ??

CentOS 5.2 64-bit I needed some space. I have a hard drive that had an old Linux install I don't use anymore. So I edited /etc/fstab and removed the entries for it (entries I only needed so I could get data off it). Then I edited /boot/grub.conf and removed the lines to boot it. Then I rebooted. It booted but a bunch of services failed because libstdc++ could not be found. I logged into a console and tried to verify libstdc++ and that failed, I guess rpm depends upon it. touch /forcefsck && shutdown -r now After booting - no fsck errors, but libstdc++ error when starting some services. cd /usr/lib64 - the shared library was there. I looked in /etc/ld.so.conf and /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ just in case for some idiotic reason I had added a library path on the other drive - nope. I then ran /sbin/ldconfig - and then rpm --verify worked. rebooted and all services started. So - clearly the library cache got borked and needed to be rebuilt. The question is what borked it? Anyone seen this before?

hey... here's one i can't see.. goat a bunch of files in different dirs.. the files might have spaces 1foo_ aa_bb_cc.dog 2foo_aa_bbbb_cc.dog 3foo_aa_bb _ccc.dog 4foo_aa_bb_cc.dog 5foo_aa_bb_cc.dog 6foo_aa_bb_cc.dog i'm trying to figure out how i can do a complete list of all files with *foo*dog so i get the files with spaces and underlines... i thought simply doing somehting like ls '*foo_*.dog' and surrounding the filename with single quotes would work.. but it doesn't. thoughts/pointers/etc... thanks

Hello. I've been using Fedora since about the FC6 era, for home use. I don't like the 6 month upgrade (or re-install) concept, and I don't need the latest & greatest versions of apps. So, CentOS sounds enticing. But, I have some questions. I found 2 centos websites (primary and wiki), and checked the forum - but couldn't find answers to these concerns. Is CentOS basically like Fedora? (Well, except for the updates every 6 months!) As in 'look & feel', underlying operations, etc. (Btw, I know about removing upstream branding.) Any caveats? Meaning, does it use the same repositories that Fedora does? Are there any major or significant differences? I should just go for the most recent package (5.2) - yes? About how old are the apps? (A few months?) How are application updates handled? 5.2 has firefox-3.0-0.beta5.6.el5. I saw (on the Firefox website) that 3.0.6 is out. Will an app update get that version, or something just a bit older? (btw, I know about backporting.) Does centos use Plymouth? I have a somewhat recent computer (about 3 years old) that has an intel chipset (which Plymouth can't handle yet, and so it needs xdriver=vesa during install). Michael, in Pennsylvania (USA)

4 X 500 gb drives - best software raid config for a backup server?

Hi there, I am currently setting up a server that will house my backups (simply using rsync). This system has 4 X 500 gb drives and I am looking to raid for max drive space and data safety. Performance is not so much a concern. My experience with software raids in nil, so some of these may seem like pretty dumb questions. I was thinking a raid 1 is probably sufficient. Would it be best to raid 1 two drives each and LVM them together? My next question would be about how to do this as I have never done a linux software raid. D

Typically, once a source IP has queried a DNS, the result is cached for the time to live (TTL) of the resulting record and the query should not normally be repeated. Given this, I added the following rules to my firewall: ... # Block cache poisoning attacks # Drop repeated DNS requests -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p udp -m udp -m recent -i eth0 --dport 53 --update \ --seconds 660 --hitcount 7 --name DNSTHROTTLE --rsource -j DROP -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p udp -m udp -m recent -i eth0 --dport 53 -j ACCEPT \ --set --name DNSTHROTTLE --rsource ... Note that eth0 is my external NIC so these rules only fire for DNS requests that are not from my local network. I came up with seven queries in eleven minutes was a reasonable sign of a cache poisoning attack. Your mileage may very. These two rules replaced about 30 IPs in my blacklist and are completely automatic. The funny this that a lot of the brute force cache poisoning attempts just keep banging away so the source IP stays on the blacklist. I've installed java-1.6.0-openjdk (from EPEL) on a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 system and see that it has not registered itself with alternatives. First, is there a reason I should know about that it does not set itself up as an alternative? BiND Failover

Hi list, I've two servers running the same ldap service. A is primary server and B is simply a mirror, and accounts from server A are constantly synchronized with B. Now I don't have a automatic failover solution, whenever server A goes down, I have to point the domain's A record to server B and wait for the DNS to get updated. Takes quite a lot of time but the ldap service is crucial to the system and shouldn't be down for longer than a few minutes. I've heard about Dyndns? They provide automatic failover if one server does down, what I want to know is if I can do the same using Bind? And if it's possible to do it automatically? Without human intervention. I don't want a round-robin solution, I want a automatic switchover if primary box goes down. Regards Per Qvindesland

I am trying to hwclock to set the time. (hwclock -w) this is what I get on standard 5.2 x86_64. hwclock --debug hwclock from util-linux-2.13-pre7 hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=19: No such device. No usable clock interface found. Getting "poll: protocol failure in circuit setup" from rsh

Hi all, I inherited a cpu-stats script from the previous *nixadmin at our department. This script relies on a rsh-command to get the vmstats from the remote machines and then using a perl script to push it to a web server. Now I've just added a new machine running CentOS 5.2 x64 to the script and I get the error message in the subject line; "poll: protocol failure in circuit setup". What I've done so far is to check whether the command "rsh mach218 uptime" from m2 works with and w/o iptables running on mach218, checking that m2 is allowed to rlogin in m218 hosts.allow, hosts is properly setup, xinetd rsh and rlogin services are on and started AFAICT. In neither case does rsh work when run against m218, I still get the protocol failure-message. I have another machine, m14, that also runs CentOS 5.2 but the x86-flavour, and here rsh works. As far as I can tell, the machines are identically setup with respect to iptables, hosts and hosts.allow. Also the /etc/xinetd.conf are identical on both m14 and m218. Feels like I'm missing something obvious... Can you guys help? ip6tables forwarding rule

I have 2 boxes that act as IPv6 routers. One with 2 physical interfaces, the other with 6 vlan 'interfaces' on one physical interface plus a second physical interface. On both systems I have in /etc/sysconfig/network IPV6FORWARDING=yes But if I have my 'basic' ip6tables service running, only ICMP messages get through. Since both of these boxes are Centos based, I can't use the new shorewall6 that requires at least FC9 (both boxes have shorewall for IPv4 routing controls). Is there a 'simple' rule to add to forward all IPv6 traffic between the interfaces, with the other rules only impacting traffic for each host itself?

Lost konqueror navigation toolbars

Re-sending, in the hope that someone has a brainwave. I still have some outstanding problems caused by the recent power problems. All my ~/.kde ended up in lost+found, identified by numbered folders. I've gradually managed to trace the origin of all the files and returned them to their correct place. However a few may have been lost, as there are no files left and I still have some problems. I'll post them in separate threads. When I launch konqueror as user I have no Main or Location toolbar. Also, my menu options are Settings, Help, Edit, View and Tools, in that order. Location, Go, Bookmarks and Window are missing. If I knew what provides these I could copy them from another account. Can anyone help, please? Do you know what causes a toolbar to be displayed? All the toolbars are visible in other users' konqueror, so I don't think anything vital is lost. Anne

Gpg-agent will not start

I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm missing a package here, as no matter what I do I get the message that gpg-agent is not running and I should remove reference to it in the config or fix it. USB Memory Key not recognized

Intel DQ35JO MB CentOS-5.3 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5xen x86_64 I have a USB meory key (Kingston) that I formally used with a CentOS-5.2 (32bit) system. When I plug it into a connector slot the light on the key comes on but there are no entries created in /media and no entries made to the /var/log/messages file. I have a usb mouse and keyboard attached to the same system. Both work fine. Is there a problem because I am running xen? Is this related to the host being a 64 bit system? OT: Oracle client logging issue

Hi We have an app on CentOS 5 that is in pyton and uses some form of thin oracle client called oracle-instantclient-basic, this error is more towards that client i think but if anyone has seen this before then it would be great to hear about it. The basic issue is that we are getting lots of sqlnet.log 's on the filesystem and we dont seem to be ablr to configure the location of that log as there is no oracle configuration for the client as such it seems in terms of tnsnames etc that you'd get with the full client. Anyone ever used this client before or know how to direct its logs somewhere else? thanks

Question about sub-domains

We currently have a web server that is running apache on cent 5.2. We are upgrading our student info system so that it allows web access and the vendor (powerschool) is stating that this has to be a registered domain or a sub domain and only runs on Windows Server. My question is can you tell apache to point a subdomain to a diiferent IP address. For example, Our domain is currently amelia.k12.va.us. If someone goes to powerschool.amelia.k12.va.us it points to another IP other than itself? I have no experience with sub-domains so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -- Bo Lynch

I'm trying to install FOG (an opensource ghostlike backup/rollout server) on a centos 5 box but at the end of the isntaller script it can't find chckconfig altough it's in /sbn and I run the (redhat specific install) script as root. How can I make sure chckconfig gets found? Tried adding the full path in the script to /sbin/chckconfig but got the same error. Trying to restart IPv6 over PPP

My IPv6 connection over my PPPoE link is down. IPv4 is up. I have tried: /etc/ppp/ipv6-up ppp0 and get the error: ./network-functions: line 78: ifcfg-: No such file or directory The gateway has been up and running for > 150 days. I have not been testing anything IPv6 out of my net for a while, so don't know when IPv6 connectivity went south. I don't want to restart the network, as I have a BIG rsync going right now (pulling down i386 FC10), and would like to get some external IPv6 testing done today....

Hi. I configured a remote machine to allow network installation when the machine is being loaded with PXE. I'm using an x86_64 desktop. The installation is almost fully automated with a kickstart file. I enabled PXE in the BIOS, started the installation and in the middle of the installation, i got a crash which reported an error. clamAV problem

Since my power problems that resulted in a re-install I have a problem which I've failed to locate up to now. The logs show daily.cld updated (version: 8950, sigs: 72593, f-level: 38, builder: ccordes) Database updated (510565 signatures) from db.gb.clamav.net (IP: 163.1.3.8) WARNING: Clamd was NOT notified: Can't connect to clamd through /tmp/clamd.socket I've been through the config files, but obviously there is something in the setup that I've failed to do. Scans are running every night, but service clamd status clamd: unrecognized service It has to be something stupid that I've missed. Can someone kick me in the right direction? Thanks Anne

MySql server on Centos 5

I have a question about Mysql. I use mysql 5.0.68 on Centos 4 from Centos plus repository. The old hardware steers me to Centos 5, however there is mysql 5.0.45. Some program solutions which we are using on the old server (production for 500 users) do not work properly on new one (some querys producing reports). Is there a source where I can find version for Centos 5 server equal to the Mysql version which I run on the old server. I'd like to use some kind of repository. Looking forward for sugesstions. Suggestion for Server Room monitoring

Hi all, I have a situation like this: Our little server room is always on. It has an air conditioning unit, but barely enough. So sometimes during weekend, the temperature could reach unhealthy level, like 29 degree Celsius. Currently, there's no personnel to monitor it 24 hours a day. I'm thinking of using a tool to monitor the temperature, and then send sms/email when it reaches certain threshold. Anyone has an idea? Could be software based or hardware one. Thank you.

Hi guys, I have my driverdisk created and the files are on a USB pendrive. How do I make the USB pendrive /dev/sdb and not /dev/sda??? I am wanting the installation to take place on sda and the driver disk to be sdb? My driver disk is a network driver disk, r8168. Jerry

ipsec net-to-net problem

I am trying to set up an ipsec net-to-net VPN and am having problems. Here is a diagram of the setup: LAN A --> Host A ----> Internet <---- Host B <-- LAN B LAN A = 10.10.2.0/24 LAN A gateway = 10.10.2.254 Host A internal = 10.10.2.254 Host A external = xx.xx.xx.xx Host B external (see below) Host B internal = 10.10.1.10 LAN B = 10.10.1.0/24 LAN B gateway = 10.10.1.252 (F5 Big IP) Host A is CentOS5 and is a router/firewall for LAN A. Host B is RHEL4 and does not have a public IP. It is behind an F5 BigIP and the BigIP forwards all traffic for yy.yy.yy.yy to Host B. Likewise it masks Host B's outbound traffic as yy.yy.yy.yy. I can get this tunnel to come up but seem to be having problems on the Host A side. If I run 'tcpdump |grep -i esp' on Host A and ping a host on LAN A from a host on LAN B (whose routing table was adjusted to go through Host B for the 10.10.2.0 network), I see ESP traffic on Host A: AH(spi=0x04c98137,seq=0x3): IP 10.10.1.10 > xx.xx.xx.xx: ESP(spi=0x07b6bcd3,seq=0x3), length 116 (ipip-proto-4) If I ping a host on LAN B from a host on LAN A I don't see any ESP traffic on either Host A or Host B and the host doing the ping gets a 'Destination Host Unreachable'. It seems like a problem with the routing on Host A. Hello all, I recently started seeing these messages on the consoles of three production Centos 5.2 servers. They have been occurring nonstop for the past few days and show up routinely every five minutes. INIT: Id "snmp" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "snmp" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "snmp" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes Despite trying to debug this and googling for the last couple of hours, I haven't had any luck as to why the errors are generated or how to fix them. There are a ton of posts on the web related to other Id's, such as various tty ports and "x", but I haven't seen a single thing related to "snmp". The answer usually seems to be that there are misconfigured lines in /etc/inittab, but in my case there is nothing even remotely related to "Id snmp" in inittab. The make matters more confusing, snmp isn't installed or being used on these machines. I doubled checked and the extent of any snmp packages are these two: # rpm -qa | grep -i snmp perl-Net-SNMP-5.2.0-1.2.el5.rf net-snmp-libs-5.3.1-24.el5_2.1 Both only contain a couple of libraries, so I hardly believe they have anything to do with it. According to what I've learned, this error is usually generated when init tries to continually respawn a process that dies immediately... but as to what process it could possible be I have no idea. I even tried to strace init (-p1), but apparently this is a forbidden operation: # strace -p1 attach: ptrace(PTRACE_ATTACH, ...): Operation not permitted That's a shame too, but at least I could see what init is trying to do. Any ideas? I'm just about stumped as to how to proceed at this point. Hi, My both CentOS 5 servers have logging problems. Logs such as messages, boot.log, kernel, spooler, and tallylog in /var/log directory are all 0 size. The kernel is: Linux 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 #1 SMP. Since the /var/log/messages contained no information it would be impossible to troubleshoot the problem. I am very sure both systems have not been hacked by others. funny SMS server tips

Hi guys, Hehe.. I thought I want to share this. In previous email, I said about monitoring server room. I just realize that we have this quite old sms server appliance in the room. It's still running though. I want to setup cronjob from linux machines, to send mail to that sms server, and it will then send sms to my cell about the machine condition. Problem is, nobody knows how to configure the sms server, and there's no docs beside a little description in the web UI. Been googling around few hours, but since it's quite old and proprietary, no good result. Problem is, the sms server's qmail refuses to work if I use hostname in the mail like mycellnum@sms-server. If I want to use mycellnum(a)192.168.1.100, sendmail refuses to send it as "host not found". So, out of curiosity, I define this in this /etc/hosts: 192.168.1.100 192.168.1.100 And now sending from sendmail to mycellnum(a)192.168.1.100 works! is it a feature or what? In network convention, all-numeric hostname is not allowed right? Hehe.. anyway, now I can monitor my server room using sms.

network driver at installation time

Is there anyway to load a network driver at installation time. Centos 5.2 x86_64. Alternatively, is there a way to do a USB network driver at boot? Either is fine... Presently I have a rtl 8168 that just hangs at DHCP request. I want to use all the kickstart information I have setup, but need the network to work for that. Any ideas? Jerry

ma78gm and esata

Hi all, my motherboard ma78gm is working. I am trying to get working the esata. I plug in my external driver, power cycle the external drive. then turn on my machine. My drive sda is detect as normal. however I dont see anything about any other disk. dmesg didnt show anything. Is there something special needed to activate the esata drive? Jerry

tty login hangs

Hi all, I have two servers both identical in hardware and I have just done a clean install of CentOS 5.2 x86_64 on both. Sometimes (more often than not) when I log in at the physical console (e.g. tty1, tty2, etc.) I will be logged in and it stops responding even if the shell is not doing anything. When this happens I can still switch to another VT with alt+f2 and login as normal. I don't know if bash, mingetty or whatever process is locking up. If I do a `ps ax` all processes are sleeping. Any idea's what could cause this? Thanks

httpd: "internal dummy connection"

On my Centos 2.5 web server, in /var/log/httpd/access_log, I saw several occurrences of: new.mydomain.net - - [11/Feb/2009:14:34:58 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 403 - "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) (internal dummy connection)" I have never seen anything like this before over many years of watching my logs. I presume it failed because my named virtual host does not have "new...", if for no other reason. What is it? Why do I have it now, and not before? Thanks for your advice. Mike.

SSH problems

Hi list For some odd reason after a reboot that one of my server's initiated on it's own it is now not allowing ssh logins it gives the following errors when I try to loging with ssh -v: Minor code may provide more information Unknown code krb5 195 I have googled a little and I see that other people has also had this problem and the solution seems to be to set the GSSAPIAuthentication to no and that will work, the thing that I am wondering about is if there is any ways of still being capable to login with ssh remotely I mean if there is any switch that I could use to get pass this during login. I have a motherboard that in the 5.2 install disk the network is not detected. However I want to use all my network kickstart files so I am looking for a way to have a USB network at install time. Dear List, I have one last little problem with setting up an cluster. My gfs Mount will hang as soon as I do an iptables restart on one of the nodes.. First, let me describe my setup: - 4 nodes, all running an updated Centos 5.2 installation - 1 Dell MD3000i ISCSI SAN - All nodes are connected by Dell?s Supplied RDAC driver Everything is running stable when the cluster is started (tested for a week or so), when I did some last changes in my firewall and did an iptables restart it all went down after a while. I reproduced the issue now several times so I am quite sure it has to do with the iptables restart. I have a custom fence script for our ipoman powerswitch, which is all tested and is working fine. Hi there, I would like to hear some hardware recomendations to connect our smtp server (postfix) to an external SMS box. Basically I am looking for a SMS box that takes messages via smtp and sends them via the SMS part. Has anyone here implemented a solution like this? Hey A friend asked me how he could stay up to date with CentOS and if there was a newsletter or something. After some research I found that there was a discussion on the promo list about half a year ago but nothing happened. If you look at : http://wiki.centos.org/SpecialInterestGroup/Promo/TODO you can see, that is has to be done :) Would something like this, be appreciated by the community? What would people want to see in a newsletter? Are people interested in doing this? Personally I was thinking of : - General information (Like "whats up with 5.3") - What is happening on the mailing lists / Forum - Developer interview (Developers would you do that?) - Tips/Tricks - Event reports and up coming events - Word of the Month. Something to lighten up the newsletter. - Bug fixes - Ideas welcome I would be quite happy to contribute to this and it would give people who want to give something back a nice chance to get public exposure. Hello, I am implementing procmail with postfix on a new SMTP server, I have too many .procmailrc from my former sendmail installation and not enough time to learn maildrop and migrate right now. It seems that LOGABSTRACT does not work : I don't get the datas LOGABSTRACT should prompt in the log, whether I don't set LOGABSTRACT (default behaviour) or if I set it to "on", "yes" : anyone have hints about that ? Hi, I am new to clustering and loadbalancing in apache, What is best way of doing it? How do I do the clustering and what tools do I need to use? Do I have those tools, I use CentOS , Do i have any tools in CenOs which comes default in it? And how do I do apache load balancing? should I rely on apache forums or mailing list or is there any way or tool I can use in CentOS? Problem with PXEBOOT of diskless client -- fails to mount RAMDISK

I am having a problem with setting up diskless clients under CentOS 5.2. I have everything working under CentOS 4.7. This is an adaptation of the (somewhat old) Diskless Linux with PXE HOWTO by Gerd v. Egidy, originally at the URL http://www.intra2net.com/opensource/diskless-howto/, which is now defunt (there is a mirror of it at http://blog.chinaunix.net/u/2389/showart_82438.html) What I am doing is using a RAMDISK to mount a NFS exported (read-only) root file system and copying part of it to a RAMDISK root file system, all of this after configuring the clients ethernet (via DHCP) and loading the NFS modules. The RAMDISK uses a statically built BusyBox for all of its functions, including ash. I am using the stock syslinux, dhcpd, tftp-server, and kernel RPMS. Hi guys - I'm really looking forward to 5.3 for the potential of ext4. I am moving/copying image files lately 8G file and it is slow. I am hoping that ext4 really speeds that up. My question is: will we be able to boot ext4 file systems? Will the boot partition still be ext3 and then have to mount the ext4 filesystem? I did not see mention of it in the release notes. I also believe that the same thing happened on the last update as well but, as I now do bind updates far more circumspectly, I may simply be confusing the present remedy with the original problem. In any case, the problem was not expected and it caused considerable grief until the problem was identified and the cause determined. It is just something that anyone hosting their own DNS should consider. rt_cache leak in 2.6.18

Hello, This is a CentOS 5.2 box configured as a router for a network handling about 200-300 Mbps, routing traffic to/from the internet for about 6,000 IPs. After about 2-3 days, the kernel complains about "dst cache overflow" and even thought it hasn't crashed, the network is un-responsive. All IP forwarding stops and the server cannot be reached from any network interfaces. After diagnosing the issue, it appears that there is a rt_cache leak in the kernel. At 5 minute intervals I collect the following two values: `/sbin/ip -o route ls cache | wc -l` `grep ip_dst_cache /proc/slabinfo | awk -F' ' '{ print $2; }'` The first value represents the number of cached routes in the network stack. The second value represents the number of cached route objects the kernel has allocated. After collecting the data for 8 hours, I have seen the cached routes count remain fairly constant, but the number of cached route objects increase from about 220,000 objects to 410,000 objects. The cached routes count remains between 4,000 and 8,000 routes. I posted a pretty graph at http://www.pier-pro.com/ip_dst_cache_leak.png (the blue line is the value of ip_dst_cache, the green value represents the count of cached routes). Once the ip_dst_cache value reaches the value of /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/max_size then the network fails and the kernel complains about 'dst cache overflow' whenever a packet arrives. The only solution at that point is to perform a reboot. Flushing the routing tables by `echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/flush` only clears the cached routes, however the value of ip_dst_cache does not change. According to http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2005-07/1175.html this is a known bug that was fixed in 2.6.11, however, I'm running 2.6.18 (as updated with `yum update`) I downloaded the kernel sources, and indeed, the kernel source contains the bug fix in the above article. Therefore ... I'm at a loss as to where to go from here. Certainly rebooting the server every day is not an option, and increasing the max_size will just delay it. Suggestions? Thank you, Hector

Problems with mysql multi-master after update.

Hello, after I updated from mysql-5.0.22 CentOS 5.0 to mysqld-5.0.45 in CentOS 5.2, mysql looses master-slave sync after one node reboots. I've noticed that the slave doest not respect the informantion on master.info, instead, it tries to read the informantion from the master server file inc-index.index. Let me give a example, the master is alredy on incremental.000006 and the slave in synced, the master.info in the slave server is showing is is reading de incremental.000006, but in the master inc-index.index all 6 files are listed, from 1 to 6. The file 1 to 5 were already deleted in a cleaning process as thay were alread synced with the slave. After the reboot, the slave tries to find the file incremental.000001 on the master and this causes the problem. In 5.0.22 this would not happen, this does not happen as I have servers running this version and after the reboot, it starts syncing on the right incremental. Any idea? Tks.

What is the System Event Log?

My Dell PowerEdge T105 running Centos-5.2 has started crashing fairly often (3 times in the last 2 hours). The message on the screen tells me to look at the System Event Log. Is this just /var/log/messages ? I didn't see anything helpful there. As far as I could see, the last messages before the crash were about samba, which is running on the machine. Has anyone had such problems with Samba? I've stopped the smb service to see if this improves matters. I'm running a standard updated system. I looked at smartctl but this did not suggest that there was anything wrong with the 2 SATA disks. Incidentally, wouldn't it be a good idea for /var/log/messages* to start a new file when booting?

Sometimes the VPN gets disconnected, so I create a cronjob to restart the VPN client when it happens: Problem is: sshd seem doesn't want to bind to tun0. I restart ssh, network, no good. tinydns/djbdns opinion poll

Good morning: We're about to start moving our public DNS to in-house managed servers. My first thought was "Linux + BIND" and we're done. Someone in another business unit's IT dept. has suggested tinydns be used. >From what I could find, it looks like this software hasn't really had any community drive behind it in a while. The latest RPMs on rpmforge are for red hat 6 and red hat 7. I very much dislike the idea of compiling my own because of all the overhead associated with making sure the system stays up-to-date and so on so this really puts me off already. Does anyone have an opinion on this software? It seems to have some strong virtues but maybe not enough to justify using it over BIND just because any Linux admin we hire could be expected to know BIND. I've been playing around with qemu and wanted to make the guest OS instance visible on my network. This meant getting bridging and tun/tap working. After getting things working by pasting command from the CentOS wiki article plus adding a few enhancements, I decided to capture the process in a shell script that would be suitable for a user in the sudoers file to fire off. Not sure why (which is why I'm posting this) but I couldn't get the same result from the shell script as I got from pasting commands onto the command line or using the shell history. After a lot of very tedious debugging, I finally got the script to work by adding a couple of short sleeps at selected locations. Without a sleep after the "ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0", eth0 retains its original IP address instead of having no address. The qemu guest VM still functions correctly but the host system loses connectivity. Likewise, without a sleep after the tunctl command, the device /dev/net/tun isn't present when the next command executes. With the sleeps the script executes as expected and sets up the bridge. FYI. I just had all of the squirrelmail prefs for all the users on one of my servers disappear. I have never had anything like this happen ever before. I'm in the process of finding the needle in the haystack of logs to try to get a handle on this. I'm sending this to the list as a heads up. process accounting - track PIDs

Hello -- I've done some searching but haven't come up with much yet, I was wondering if there was a way to track PID creation and what command was assigned to a PID? I am trying to track down a locking issue with NFS/NLM where the client PID that initiates the unlock request is not the same PID that initiates the lock request. Even with running "ps auxww" in a "while true" loop I cannot seem to capture the PID it comes/goes too fast. I can see the PID right after the one specified, but not the one I want. I tried a couple things I found for the audit system: auditctl -a entry,always -S fork -S vfork -S clone auditctl -a entry,always -S brk -F 'a0=0' auditctl -a task,always auditctl -a exit,always And none of them were able to detect the PID that was created. Another way to approach this is perhaps NLM debugging on the linux client side but I haven't had any luck tracking down useful debugging info on the client side. I saw one post mentioning a kernel patch is needed and it may make it into RHEL 5.3, though this is 4.4, so maybe it is not possible. any ideas? thanks nate

I've been to FOSDEM this weekend and noticed the small number of CentOS people at the booth. The Ubuntu people work with Local Community Teams to support and promote the distro. I think it would be beneficial for CentOS to setup a similar structure. At the moment it's mostly sysadmins who introduce/sneak CentOS into businesses. Local Community Teams can setup a booth at computer fairs and other events. This way the general public (small businesses, non-profit organisations, schools, ....) are exposed to CentOS.

Hi All: I am working with a law firm that would like to offer to it's clients the ability to access their documents through a web interface. This would require a nice gui to offer the clients with a simple process for the clients to download from. AHCI support in CentOS 5.2?

My friend has an external sata hard disk, and likes the hot-plug feature. However, that works only if the appropriate sata setting in the motherboard bios is set to AHCI (IDE compatibility and RAID are two other options, but hot-plugging doesn't work with them). The machine has WinXP atm, while Linux is about to be installed in the following couple of days. Now, on wikipedia I read that AHCI is supported starting from kernel 2.6.19 and later, while current CentOS 5.2 has 2.6.18. Is it possible to make AHCI work under 2.6.18 or should I install Fedora instead? Fedora will become obsolete in a year or so, and I will not be around to reinstall it again for him, so I would prefer a long-term solution (CentOS). But I need to be sure that it can be made to do all that fancy hot-plug-auto-mount-sata-ahci stuff without too much hassle. Oh, btw, I am talking about hot-plugging using the sata cable --- usb connection of course already works, but this is a hard disk and speed increase is highly nontrivial when using sata connection compared to usb. Hi I have CentOS 5.2 installed on a computer (the same one that I just posted a message on: Intel DG33BU motherboard) and for even though audio is reported to be found and working Linux just doesn't play anything through the speakers. The computer dual boots Linux/Windows and when in Windows sound works great, so it's strictly a Linux problem. Can anyone try and help me find out where the problem is and resolve it. -- TIA Paolo

Sound with headphones on: Streamaudio perfect but youtube and system-config-soundcard silent

This afternoon, I bought a pair of ear plugs (the large flat kind that hook onto my ears). Plugged them in to test and they work perfectly. I'm listening to streamaudio.com as I type this. However, when I tried to watch a youtube.com video (my wife exercise dancing) just silence. She had the same video on to test and the sound was fine on her box. Then, I tried system-config-soundcard and with the volume set at 100%, just silence. Does this have to do with lower voltages coming from youtube.com and system-config-soundcard or is there some other explanation and a cure? TIA....

squid HA failover?

I'm running a pair of squids as an internal cache for some intermediate data used by a web server farm and currently doing failover by going through an F5 bigip. However, I'd like to avoid the bigip and use heartbeat since there are only two machines. I don't need to sync any content since it is a fast-changing cache and either machine can handle everything. Is it possible to add a floating IP with heartbeat and cut over to it slowly while also still using the existing IP's on that subnet? The documentation I've seen implies that it is bad to use the real IP's. If heartbeat can't do this, would it work to use vrrp? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Does any one have an idea as to when centOS 5.3 will be out and if so then I would like to hear from you coz I am waiting for it day and night coz I heard that the kernel of centos 5.3 will have inbuilt support for intel pro/wireless 3945 wifi card ( I have been trying to install the drivers desperately with no fruit ). Yum update conflicts perl-Math-BigInt

I followed the Wiki instructions for setting up *yum-priorities*. I added the rpmforge repo I installed clamd without a problem. Now when I go to update I get conflicts with perl-Math-BigInt. Is the only solution to uninstall the base version and then install the rpmforge version? According the the wiki "Packages from repositories with a lower priority will never be used to upgrade packages that were installed from a repository with a higher priority." Personally, I find this UPS exploding paranoia rather ridiculous. One person has one UPS burst into flames and everyone is yelling the sky is falling. We have no idea what conditions the UPS had been subjected to and to then jump to the conclusion that all UPS's are bombs waiting to explode is just insane. We've been using UPS's for years and years and the worst we've had are batteries that got swollen to the point we had to use a crowbar to get them out of the UPS. We then replaced the battery and had years more use out of the UPS. We've purchased used UPS's at government auctions, replaced the batteries, and had years of service out of them. All our UPS's are APC. We have and have used a wide range of sizes, from 250VA to 3000VA, Backup's to SmartUp's. I've used/tried other brands, but haven't been as satisfied with them. Please, do not delay this "Important" multiple security update. See https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2009-0225.html for more info. This update is "5.3" kernel but has been released as security update too. RHN pushed this kernel one day ahead of rest of 5.3 packages (on my servers). RH maintains API and ABI (!) compatibility so there is no problem to use this kernel AFAIK. So please, do not delay it anymore, this contains multiple security vulnerabilities fixed since 2009-01-20. It holds the box through power variations, and can supply power for a couple of minutes - enough to allow a shutdown, since that box is never running unattended. I got it when we upgraded the company one - it was our (the company's) first, attached to the file-server, so replaced at a reasonable age. Anne

card reader issue

I have never done anything with a card reader before so I have no idea what I'm doing here. I have a laptop with a card reader in it and when I put the card in I see this in /var/log/messages: Feb 5 13:28:58 localhost pcscd: winscard.c:304:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found This comes up many times in the log. udev by-id symlinks randomly missing for tape drives on centos5

Hello! I'm having problems with udev /dev/tape/by-id/ symlinks.. it seems symlinks to tape drives are sometimes (randomly) missing after reboot. Server in question has IBM TS3200 tape library connected with 2 drives in it.. so /proc/scsi/scsi shows 3 devices: 2 tape drives, and 1 medium changer (tape library). So I should have 3 symlinks in /dev/tape/by-id/ directory.. 2 symlinks to tape drives, and 1 symlink to mediumchanger/tapelibrary. Running 'udevtrigger' _sometimes_ creates the missing links, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes if all the symlinks are there to begin with, and you run 'udevtrigger', some of the tape drive symlinks might get removed too.. The symlink for the mediumchanger seems to be there always though.. Has anyone seen this behaviour? How to fix it? Whenever I run 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' I can see all of the devices listed there. IBM 'itdt' tape drive / tapelibrary diagnostic tool works OK too, and always shows all the devices. I don't have any errors in the dmesg/syslog, and the devices work OK if I use /dev/nst* (tape drives) or /dev/sg* (mediumchanger/tapelibrary) devicenames to access them. I'd like to be able to use /dev/tape/by-id/<foo> symlinks to make sure correct devices are accesssed. The server in question is running CentOS 5.2 x86_64 (with latest updates installed). I am installed ORACLE software and it say server did NOT have PD: Checking for make... found - /usr/bin/make Checking for ld... found - /usr/bin/ld Checking for cc... found - /usr/bin/cc Checking for ar... found - /usr/bin/ar Checking for ksh... Unable to find PD KSH version. Unable to locate all utilities with system path. The server is CENTOS 5.1 with almost all software installed. Can anone tell me: 1. where is PD? 2. squid stops working several times a day

Missing latest kmod-xfs and kmod-drbd82?

Since December there have been several kernel updates to the centosplus repository for centos4... but no updates to kmod-xfs or kmod-drbd82. Latest kernel is 2.6.9-78.0.13.plus.c4, but latest kmod-xfs is 2.6.9_78.0.5.plus.c4. Latest drbd82 kmod is also for 78.0.5. I know there was a mention on the list that these modules are not kernel dependent anymore... but yum and rpm seem to indicate otherwise, and trying to install kmod-xfs-smp or update kmod-drbd82-smp on my servers is not possible. $ rpm -qRp kmod-xfs-smp-0.4-1.el4.2.6.9_78.0.5.plus.c4.x86_64.rpm /bin/sh /bin/sh /sbin/depmod /sbin/depmod kernel-smp-x86_64 = 2.6.9-78.0.5.plus.c4 rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1 rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1 rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) <= 3.0.3-1 Above, the last available version of the module shows a dependency on the 78.0.5 kernel. These modules will of course also install in the wrong /lib/modules/ location. I've over the last two months opened tickets on bugs.centos.org on the issue (tickets 3360, 3316, 3291). However, these tickets are still new and have had no comments. Anyone have any advice on dealing with the missing RPMs or the dependency issue? Thanks in advance. -Alan

There's a reason I don't like running anything beyond my ALIX-router 24x7 at home (while I'm away). And it's not the power-bill. IMO, UPSs don't really belong in the living-room. Doesn't really matter if they are old or new. Imagine returning home from work, only to find only the smoldering remainders of what was your house in the morning... Rainer

kickstart won't kick-off via network

Hello list, I try to do an automated network installation of centos 5.2, following the redat documentation at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/sysadmin-guide/… However, when installing I get promptet for various things, like which network interface I would like to use for installation, or the location of the install medium. But thats not what I wanted, I want to start the boot process, and then leave the box untill it is installed. What I did: First a manual install form DVD. I then used the kickstart file /root/anaconda-ks.cfg for a network installation. I changed the install line from cdrom to url: install url --url http://9.0.0.1/all/repository/CentOS5.2 This url contains the whole DVD (and can be viewed in a webbrowser). Then I generated the following entry in my pxe control file (default): LABEL centos5.2_cluto_cnode MENU LABEL CentOS 5.2 cluto ^node kernel distro/centos5.2/vmlinuz append initrd=distro/centos5.2/initrd.img ramdisk_size=7494 ks=http://9.0.0.1/all/profiles/cluto_centos5.2/cnode/ks.cfg This is part of a boot menue, therefor the MENU entry. The url of the kickstart file is also valid, I can wget it. Now since I get asked all these questions at boot time, I suspect that the kickstart file is not there to answer these questions. I would be greatful for any suggestions on how to further debug or solve this. Another issue can be that you aren't backing up the air conditioner power, so when the grid goes down your still-running equipment overheats, damaging the electronics.
