programs with no man pages?

I accidentally typed ss instead of ls and was surprised when it did something... I can use rpm's --whatprovides to see where it came from, but how are you supposed to find out want a program does when it doesn't have a man page? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

compile driver before X starts

hi all is there a way/method to compile an X11 driver at boot before X starts??? Seems like the ATI catalyst driver (after a kernel change) does not start correctly and locks up the box I need to recompile the driver after udev and before X. How is this done? Jerry

epel-5.2 trying to upgrade to 5.3

Hi I just installed CentOS 5.2 (x86_64), and everything was fine. After installing the "epel-release-5-2.noarch.rpm", and issuing "yum check-update", I can see that "epel" is trying to upgrade to version 5.3. First I didn't notice the problem, and after upgrading, I got the message "error sumary" when updating the system. It seems that the x86 (32bit) version is working fine. Does anybody else having similar problem? Thanks Marcelo

Question about priorities

Hi When adding priority to a repo, like rpmforge or epel, is it better to give the same priority or can give different priority to different repos, ranking them? thanks Marcelo

general protection rip?

Hi List, On one of our CentOS 5 (x64_86) servers, identical to a number of other systems, I'm seeing some processes / services failing to run, along with the following error in /var/log/messages: Mar 2 23:25:07 someHostname kernel: wrapper-linux-x[24448] general protection rip:805386e rsp:ffc20390 error:0 Mar 2 23:25:09 someHostname kernel: dsm_sa_datamgr3[5063] general protection rip:f7f86e7c rsp:f5aab30c error:0 Mar 3 09:57:54 someHostname kernel: dcecfg32[1993] general protection rip:b9c71a rsp:ffa20568 error:0 Mar 6 09:38:59 someHostname kernel: omreport[15107] general protection rip:af597a rsp:ffdccad0 error:0 I've Googled a bit, but don't see any clear consistent explanation. Does anyone have any pointers as to what is causing this? Faulty hardware? I ran memtester, but it didn't find any issue with the memory it was able to test. Thanks, Jeff

problems with acl permissions changing ownership

Hi I am trying to get a non privileged user to update config files for apache httpd and have attempted the following: I have set the following permissions: setfacl -m user:deployer:--x /etc/httpd setfacl -R -m u:deployer:rwx,o::--- /etc/httpd/conf.d setfacl -R -m u:deployer:rwx,o::--- /etc/httpd/conf I then have a script that is run as the deployer user to checkout config files from svn and copies it to /etc/httpd directory in the following way: cd /tmp/versioned-config; cp -Rfp --backup --suffix=.$(date +%F_%T) apache/etc/ / However when I do that the ownership of the config files changes to deployer.deployer and it looses the special permissions... How can I prevent changing of ownership? The setfacl man page suggest the use of the -p flag to preserve permissions. Should I be using ACL's? Is there a better way of doing this? The --backup flag also complicates matters and I am considering getting rid of it. Centos 5.x SElinux issues

I did a complete clean install of CentOS 5 from CD yesterday. I took the default selinux configuration. After that I ran yum update and found 600 plus updates and installs. I let it go to do the updates and during that process I saw a large number of issues in the selinux troubleshooter. I also see these kinds of things in /var/log/messages: **Unmatched Entries** (Only first 10 out of 49031 are printed) audit: audit_backlog=262 > audit_backlog_limit=256 audit: audit_lost=1 audit_rate_limit=0 audit_backlog_limit=256 audit: backlog limit exceeded audit: audit_backlog=262 > audit_backlog_limit=256 audit: audit_lost=2 audit_rate_limit=0 audit_backlog_limit=256 audit: backlog limit exceeded . . . This makes me wonder if I've now got a corrupt system because of partial installs/upgrades on a number of packages ?
