First off, I want to express my appreciation for the dedication of the CentOS developers for providing us with the quality work they always do. This is a question and a request for explanation so that my little mind can understand what's going on. And for those inquiring minds who want to know, I have already filed bug reports. ;^> Over the weekend I went through several boxes here at home and upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3. I was a good boy and read the release notes first, followed the procedures recommended therein, and the upgrades went just fine. I have to say that I was less than ecstatic when I saw my desktop machines install NetworkManager and PPP where they had not been installed before. A bit of poking at the new situation led me to the conclusion that NetworkManager is now a requirement of Evolution, and PPP is a requirement of NetworkManager. Since these are desktop boxes that do not move around, and communicate via my in-house LAN over a single Ethernet interface, I don't see any pressing need for NetworkManager and PPP. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this situation, since the only conclusion that I can draw so far is that this is unnecessary system bloat. PHP framework for book sharing?

Several coworkers and I have scattered amongst us all sorts of resources related to the mesh stuff we do (RADIUS, networking, RF, antennas, microwave, R&S, Linux, etc), and most of these resources are in the form of PDF or Word docs. Is there a PHP framework that I can easily "yum install" on a CentOS box that would allow us to login and easily share these resources with each other? (Ideally, something like this would have an RSS feed so that we could get updates when a coworker uploads something.)

hwclock and util-linux on 5.3

I am getting this error: hwclock --debug hwclock from util-linux-2.13-pre7 hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=16: Device or resource busy. No usable clock interface found. Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method. [root@devcentos5x64 src]# uname -a Linux devcentos5x64.msgnet.com 2.6.18-128.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jan 21 10:41:14 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux rpm -qa | grep util-linux util-linux-2.13-0.50.el5 Doesnt util-linux need an updated package to 2.15? DKMS and new(er) Nvidia-drivers

I got the DKMS-system working and now have the Nvidia-drivers v173.08 installed (using rpmforge as suggested previously). Unfortunately this particular driver version gives me screen artifacts so as to make the screen more or less unreadable. Nvidia's proprietary drivers are now up to v180.44 and this version is fine with my test system. I really like the DKMS-system, as it enables me to keep kernel and gfx-drivers up-to-date on our course-lab computers doing 3D-molecular modeling. However if I can't make use of newer, and better, drivers this whole thing is borked for me... 8-/ My question is who updates those drivers, as the v173.08 Nvidia drivers are now almost a year old? Would there be any other good repo with more current drivers suitable for use with DKMS and CentOS? The repos I found are tagged with PCLinux, Mandriva and Ubuntu to name a few. I'm not quite sure these rpms would work with CentOS and the dkms install there. Any hints appreciated. how to get iptables rule to log actions?

Hi all, I need to block access to an external IP address, on CentOS 5 with iptables, but can't seem to get it right. I have the following options in /etc/sysconfig/iptables: -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 -j LOG -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 - j DROP But when I restart iptables, I get the following errors: Flushing firewall rules: [OK] Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: filter [OK] Unloading iptables modules: [OK] Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.3.5: Couldn't load target: 'RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT':/lib/iptables/libipt_RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT.so: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory. [FAILED] So, how can I block & log all outgoing traffic to this IP? The server is off line, and I only have remote access via KVM-over-IP to it. -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers

Turns out I had some other Nvidia-driver already installed. Running "yum reinstall Nvidia-x11-drv" and "yum install kernel*" fixed it. Now /etc/X11/xorg.conf says it's using driver "nvidia" instead of "nv". Thanks for the help guys!
