32bit vs 64bit memory usage

Hi! I ran the following test on 3 different setups: #!/usr/bin/php <? $n=1024*256; $usage1=memory_get_usage(); $rusage1=memory_get_usage(true); $a=array(); for($i=0;$i<$n;$i++) $a[]=0; $usage2=memory_get_usage(); $rusage2=memory_get_usage(true); echo ($usage2-$usage1).'/'.($rusage2-$rusage1); ?> ...and I got the following results: 32bit kernel & 32bit php - 18875368/19136512 64bit kernel & 64bit php - 35654376/35913728 64bit kernel & 32bit php - 18875368/19136512 Some client has a 64bit xen-based VPS with 512MB RAM user for webhosting and I'm wondering if I can free some memory installing httpd&php i386 modules. I understand that 64bit programs use more memory because the pointers, integers, etc. are now 64bit instead of 32bit, but running a 32bit program on a 64bit architecture is the same as running that program on a 32bit architecture (just concerning the memory used)? At least, that's my conclusion after running the above test. Am I wrong? Thank you! Video on (video-capable digital) still camera not accessible

I'm looking for any intelligent commentary on this - it may be a little off topic, but I'm wondering if anyone knows about this. This isn't short, so bear with me. Yesterday, I tried to download a video off of one of my digital still cameras that also takes videos (Canon Powershot SX10 iS) on my CentOS x86_64 5.3 system. When I plugged the camera into a USB port and turned it on, it showed no images available, AND no device showed up mounted for it. Now, this is not entirely unusual. I know there's a .mov on the camera, two actually, so I tried putting the SD card in a card reader and plugged that in. Nothing. No "disk" was mounted, which is what normally happens when I do that. I tried doing a gnome-mount on /dev/sdd and /dev/sde and both came up with a "no data" error. I tried mounting /dev/sdd (which is where the device should be) as a vfat, and that hung. I got a similar response when I plugged in the camera with the SD card in it and it shows up in lsusb: [mhr@mhrichter ~]$ lsusb Bus 001 Device 073: ID 04a9:318d Canon, Inc. Then I figured, well, maybe if CentOS doesn't like this, my Windows XP guest might be able to do something with it. (Hahahahaha! Not funny....) I brought up the Win guest, attached the USB "drive" for the camera and Windows installed the device just fine. I opened an Explorer window and the camera was there, with the photo and two .mov files in its folder, so I went in and clicked the photo and that was it. The Windows guest crashed, and when it came back up, it booted so slowly I wasn't sure it was going to boot at all, and the network connections were gone. I tried a number of things (restart Samba, reboot Windows in safe mode, then back to normal, restart Samba with Windows running, on and on). Nothing worked. All the TCP/IP settings were the same, and the network "card" showed one connection that was active, but no IP address, no path to host, pings all failed, etc. This morning, I figured that, since the guest network seemed to have been blown away completely, I'd reconfigure it and try again. Voila! All my drives are now sharing properly and the NAT network between host and guest works just fine. I am wondering if anyone could hazard a guess w.r.t. these issues: 1) CentOS not seeing either device (camera or SD-in-reader) as mountable 2) How to mount the SD card manually given that it does not appear to be a vfat (which is how most of these have shown up before IIRC). 3) VMWare losing its network configuration (or whatever it lost) that smashed its network connection to the host 4) (most important) Any ideas on how to get at the video files on the SD card (if I can mount it as the right kind of fs, that would be enough) Thanks. mhr

NetworkManager under CentOS 4 *without* GNome...

I have been *manually* dealing with my wired and wireless network interfaces on my laptop. I have a pair of config files (in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: ifcfg-eth0 (wired: Intel Corporation 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Mobile)) and ifcfg-eth1 (wireless: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter), both with USERCTL=true (and ifcfg-eth0 also has ONBOOT=true). I have manually fiddled with the ESSID, etc. in ifcfg-eth1 when needed, but this is tiresome. I would like to use NetworkManager, since this sounds like it might be easier. I don't use the GNome desktop, so I probably won't be able to use the stock GNome applet (this would not be a problem normally since I would just write my own GUI thingy, but there seems to be a complete lack of documentation for the GNome applet! But I have the source code and will figure it out eventually.). I use FVWM as a window manager and don't use a "desktop manager" at all. I run CentOS 4.8 on my laptop (and no, I am in no hurry to upgrade to CentOS 5). I've started NetworkManager (as root) and started NetworkManagerInfo (both as myself and a 'dummy' user with a vanila GNome desktop), but NetworkManagerInfo complains that there are no network interfaces available. Where does NetworkManager/NetworkManagerInfo get information about available network interfaces? I know that *both* interfaces work just fine using the manual startup (eg ifup eth0 and ifup eth1). Is there a config file I need to mess with? If so, where is it? Weird performance problem

Hi, I'm running a CentOS 4. server and I sometimes face a weird problem. It is a weird performance problem, and here is how I discovered it. This server runs OpenVZ virtual machines, and one of them is an asterisk server for my personal use. The first symptom of the problem is that the voice quality became flaky. So I logged on the server to see what could be eating cpu cycles, when I ran top, it took almost one minute before top actually showed. Another hint is that when I run dstat (a monitoring utility that is a mix of iostat and vmstat and other stats), I often get a "missed xx ticks", where xx is a number. The only solution I've found up to now is to reboot... But hey, this isn't a Windows 98 machine :)! I tried restarting the VZ system, which restarts all the VMs, but it didn't solve the problem. I can't tell if the problem occurs on a stock centos kernel, because the server is running production (but non-critical) virtual machines, so it is always running the openVZ kernel. HP L7780 support in hplip 1.6.7???

Alle, I have an HP L7780 MFP, which is supported under hplip 1.7.2 but not the current install of 1.6.7. Does anyone know of a way just to add that particular driver to 1.6.7, or will it require removing the standard 1.6.7 and doing a custom install of 1.7.2. cd to folder with spaces - in a script

How can I cd into a dir, when it contains spaces, and I need to use it in a script? the directory: /home/user/this is a folder/something normally I would use: cd /home/user/this\ is\ a\ folder/something/ but in a script I cant just add the "\" like: find . -type d | while read FOLDER; do cd $FOLDER; done $ No such file or directory the problem is, that there would be more "special chars" then spaces, "sed" them all? :D Thank you

Gnome terminal oddity

I have the following gnome terminal profile settings: Backspace = ASCII DEL Delete Key = Escape Sequence If the logged in session in the terminal window is my own user id then the delete key does nothing. If however, I su -l in the same terminal window then the delete key removes the character under the cursor and left shifts the rest of the line. I am fairly confident that the delete key worked in the same fashion for my usual user id up until quite recently. ntfs-3g question

This is probably a dumb question, but I've looked around and I can't find anything on this. I'm using ntfs-3g now, from rpmforge, to access my M$ Window$ disks for offline backup and other such menial tasks, and I noticed that the ntfs file systems are not mounted automatically, but I have to mount them manually as ntfs-3g devices. I _thought_ when I installed the whole dkms-fuse and fuse-ntfs-3g packages from rpmforge that they would be more integrated into the system (i.e., direct automount). Is that just my erroneous expectation, or did I miss something in the installation process? Thanks. mhr PS: Still no resolution on the Canon problem. Canon suggested I use a card reader (which I mentioned having tried and failed in my question to them). LOVE that tech support for Linux....

sendmail analyzer
