Strange problem with filesystem changes reverting on reboot

Our sysadmin was doing midnight work on moving some hardware to new power outlets. We'd recently done a CentOS 5.3 install on one of those machines and then "yum install" with the centosplus kernel and some rpmforge packages. It had been up and running fine for at least two weeks in that configuration. He sent this message: On reboot the root file system seems to have reverted to the previous startup -- no CentOS plus, no Dag repository info in /etc/yum.repos.d, no xfs, and therefore no /var/lib/mysql. This is at least the second time we've experienced this phenomenon ... suffice to say I am really really suspicious about ext3 now. The previous time this occurred was quite some time ago, probably soon after the CentOS 5.1 release -- we'd written it off as pilot error of some kind. The root is not an LVM, but it is on a software RAID -- my suspicion leans more toward a RAID issue than ext3. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

SSH problems - command not found

Hi All, I have a strange problem with ssh on CentOS 5.3: 1. I make a ssh connection from computer X to Y => OK 2. When i try to conect from Y to Z i receive a strange message: -bash: ssh: command not found (normal and root user) #which sshd /usr/sbin/sshd The sshd daemon it's on (see nr.1) So connection to Y it's OK, but from Y to another computer don't. Even back to X don't work Any advice? Thank you! P.S - sorry for my bad english

Hi All, I am confused about users. IIRC, ftp users are just ordinary users on the system (/etc/passwd) Is there an add user wizard from the command-line? I dont quite get all of the steps to add a user, dont let login except FTP, etc, etc -Jason

Debuginfo RPMs for gcc-4.1.2-44.el5

Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with an application, and I need the debuginfo RPMs for gcc. (The symbols for libstdc++ are in there.) I recently upgraded one machine to CentOS 5.3, and this installed gcc-4.1.2-44.el5. However, there isn't any corresponding debuginfo RPM on the mirror: [kMDIAG@vm01 rql_mdiag]$ links -dump http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/i386/ | grep -i gcc-debuginfo-4.1.2- [1088][ ] [1089]gcc-debuginfo-4.1.2-14.el5.i386.rpm 09-Nov-2007 23:47 80M [1090][ ] [1091]gcc-debuginfo-4.1.2-42.el5.i386.rpm 26-May-2008 22:56 81M 1089. http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/i386/gcc-debuginfo-4.1.2-14.el5.i386.rpm 1091. http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/i386/gcc-debuginfo-4.1.2-42.el5.i386.rpm I assume that the debuginfo RPMs got generated at the same time as the gcc RPM was built in January, but I can't think of a reason why they might not be on the mirrors. Is there something wrong with the mirror infrastructure?

Hi all, My kickstart section for packages is %packages @base-x @dialup @gnome-desktop @base @development-libs @core @x-software-development @mail-server @development-tools @web-server @graphical-internet @sound-and-video @legacy-software-development @editors @smb-server @ftp-server mesa-libGLU-devel device-mapper-multipath xorg-x11-server-Xnest xorg-x11-server-Xvfb imake I do not have package @mysql in the list - yet after install "rpm -qa | grep -i mysql" reports mysql loaded. how can I stop mysql from loading from anaconda? Thanks, this is centos 5.3 x86_64 Jerry

Rosewill RSV-S8 Storage Enclosure Support

I'm trying to get RSV-S8 working with Citrix XenServer 5 update 3 (which I believe runs CentOS 5.something). I have the Rosewill card that comes with it in there (sil3132 based). It's seeing the card, and seeing all my drives. I fdisk the drives and I can create the partitions, but I am unable to set up either software raid or create filesystems. I keep getting errors saying that the volumes are in use (although they do not appear to be mounted anywhere). # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1 mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) /dev/sdc1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy mdadm: create aborted Am I doing something wrong or is it possibly an issue with the driver? I had no problems using this under windows. Russ

Hi All, Cent OS 5.3. I need to install the gcc toolchain, but what yum packages is this? I need to compile ProFTPD, etc, etc. I tried yum install gcc, what else? -Jason

5.3 on an EeePC??

I have an ASUS EeePC 701 (with 2GB of RAM and an 8 GB card), on which I've installed CentOS on the hard-drive-plus-card. But it can't even use my eth0. Some one on a local LUG, where I had mentioned that other OSs did fine with all the same exact hardware, suggested that CentOS, being designed for stability rather than the bleeding edge, likely lacks drivers; so I need to get some. Anybody know what drivers (for wireless as well as ethernet cable) I need, and how/where to get ones to fit CentOS?? -- Beartooth Staffwright, PhD, Neo-Redneck Linux Convert Remember I know precious little of what I am talking about.

CentOS 5.3 - OpenJDK vs. Sun JDK

What have people's experiences with CentOS 5.3 and OpenJDK for server apps (e.g. Tomcat) been so far? Has anyone found they've had to install the Sun JDK? If so, what was broken? Thanks, Sean
